Want a 360? Hand in your gun

Reuters reports that police in Mexico City have come up with a novel attempt to reduce gun crime in the more vice-ridden parts of the Mexican capital - they're offering a free computer to those citizens who turn in high-calibre weapons (such as machine guns), and a Xbox 360 to anyone who hands in a smaller firearm. Cash is also an option.

At this point I didn't know they still made 360s.

That's hilarious. Don't know if criminals will feel they'll be able to defend themselves or do armed robberies better with a 360 in their hand though.

... This is... wow.

Most crimes are not planned, at least not thoroughly. Crimes usually occur because of availability. Simply, if I get very angry at someone, and I'm carrying a gun, there is a bigger chance of me killing him than if I didn't have a gun.

This is obviously not addressed at "career" criminals. A drugdealer should be able to purchase his own damned 360 and PS3, along with several Wiis. But for the small time crook or the guy who's tempted to become one, it can be a good thing, especially for youngsters.

It's a good idea, and there's little, if any, chance of this being bad in general. The region they're doing this in is a terribly violent place, and gang/drug warfare is not the only reason. Kudos to my government, I guess, since this is the first sane action I've seen them take in a while.

Yay! Finally a SENSIBLE solution to crime! Take guns away from law abiding citizens so they can't protect themselves while criminals KEEP thier guns and use them to steal 360's forom those who traded their guns in! BRAVO!!!

Actually, small-time criminals will be the biggest target here. I'm guessing you're not mexican.

Getting a gun in Mexico is hard. And by hard, I mean HARD. I mean I have to ask the Department of Defense for permission -including stuff like why, how, where, how many bullets-, and need a special permit whenever I purchase more ammo or transport my weapon anywhere, even to the shooting range down the street. Even then, calibers are restricted (no .45ACP for me, 9mm is the best you can get). And I'm just flying over it, it's more complex.

Needless to say, you need time, you need money (since you'll most probably want to purchase your gun from the DoD's armory), and you need a good reason to own one. Trust me, law-abiding citizens would not give a $450-$950 gun for a $450 console.

However, the guy who got one illegally and has been tempted to (or has already) commited a crime might be much more tempted, especially if his near his kid's birthday or he liked the cash option. Heck, a good rifle will get you a decent PC under this initiative.

Yeah, that's one possible issue with the initiative. That powerbrick sure could cause harm.

No, I'm not Mexican. I'm an American with the right to bare arms seeing too many people trying to overturn the 2nd amendment in this country. Though I rarerly agree with my government I still hold the Constitution as the most sacred document there is. Seeing too many people trying to overturn it in this counrt has admittedly made me a little jaded against such actions, even when they take place in other countries.

And for those wondering, no. I don't own a gun and have no intention on owning one. But the right to bare arms is th right that helps us protect all the other rights we have. People in this country need to remember that.

The right to bare arms? you mean the rigtht to have sleeveless shirts? Or you mean the right to "BEAR Arms"?

/Grammar Nazi

All joking aside. No Xth amendment is being overturned anywhere. You're being paranoid. A LOT of small time crooks get an illegal weapon, which they might have obtained for a very stupid reason. That weapon, they're stuck with it. It's a risk, a liability, and you probably will have issues moving it quickly... and you'll probably end up selling it to a bigger criminal than you. A Law abiding citizen has no real reason to go for a 1911 over, say, a Glock or a 92FS if it means breaking the law. But a drug dealer or other seedy character might.

Tell me, exactly what wrong or liberty violation is the government doing here? Allowing citizens a legal way to offload illegal weaponry and get something positive in return? The recall is not mandatory, and registered gun owners have no pressure to partake in it. What's the big problem?
