[QUOTE="FrozenLiquid"]Um, Warhammer 40,000 is essentially Warhammer in the future. It's almost like a pallette swap or something. Meh, I never liked many of the modern high fantasy universes anyway. Anything that's essentially a rip-off of Robert E. Howard, C.S Lewis, or JRR Tolkien, I pass. Come on, storytellers, make up your own damn original lore.Espada12
I'm guessing you don't like anything then?
I like Robert E. Howard, C.S Lewis, and JRR Tolkien? I thought that much was true. As I said though, high fantasy usually has issues with originality. Apparently it needs orcs, elves, and thousand-vs-thousand battles. Just look at Dragon Age. As for fantasy in general, too many genres have merged to make a real call, but there are still some decent universes out there with elements of high fantasy.
If you meant I disliked anything in the late 20th/early 21st Century fantasy, there's been quite a few original takes, and interestingly enough, a lot of them are aimed at young children. Artemis Fowl has a very interesting premise. After watching the movie, I've read up a bit on The Spiderwick Chronicles and I have to say the author too has derived his/her fantasy elements from ancient mythology as opposed to the 50's fantasy refinement. The Elder Scrolls sometimes falls a bit into the cliche category, but at other times it simply shines in original brilliance, especially the main plot of Morrowind. And of course, there's Harry Potter. Harry Potter has been one of the most original takes on fantasy since the Lord of the Rings/Narnia.
