Was Phil Fish a tortured genius?

They say that some of the greatest minds in the world suffer from turnile. Vincent van Gogh cut his ear off and ate it  then killed himself. Similarly Phil Fish had something said about him and got upset on twitter. Looking at the metacritic, Fez currently has a 91% metacritic making it the highest rated pc game of the year thus far.

Is this proof that regardless of all the hate he got from people (part pc gamers) he was in fact a top tier developer with demons?

....no he wasn't tortured and hes not a genius, Fez could have been done in half the time he did it by a bunch of 1st year college programmers.

the only thing he is good at is whining and blaming others for his failures.

Was he the guy who got all bitchy about the media and then quit?

He was a perfectionist which obviously got into the dev time. But he was also not humble which is fine, but you have to have the thick skin to go along with that.tagyhag

If you're very smart you get ostracised. What you do is not enough. It's not what you're supposed to be doing. People laugh at your ideas. They tell you you miss the point entirely, and that they don't have the time to explain it. They tire you to no end with no actual response, until you finally get counterarguments that you already went through or that completely miss the point. You start looking for what's wrong with yourself and you start thinking that maybe you're an idiot who just doesn't get it. Until much later when you start to look around and see all the dumb things people do. If you explain things as carefully as you can, nobody understands. They never will. There's no desire to understand. They might appear to, but then it turns out they didn't. To be a genius is a very lonely experience. Like you're living a different world. A meaningless world. Because if you cannot share then what is the point?

Not that I would know, of course. That's just a guess.

Phil Fish was not tortured that way as far as we can tell. He got some bad remarks like everyone else on the internet who has a big mouth. And he was not able or not willing to deal with it. Maybe that's not the full picture, but from what we know it doesn't mean that he's some kind of repressed genius.

No he wasnt a genius. He made a game, not a terrible game but not a great game either.

He wanted to be seen as a tortured genius but he wasnt. He was just a douchey kid that was plainly just a overly sensitive hipster that liked the fashion of being an indie game developer more than anything. He wanted to be a nerdy version of a indie movie star and nothing else.

He always got on my nerves anytime he would open his mouth. And that tantrum of "IM TAKING MY TOYS AND GOING HOME!!!!!" was just immature. Im glad he is gone.

If by genius you mean total asshole then yes.

No he was just a doche that probably needed to visit a psychologist. He was pretty much a one hit wonder and his game could have easily been done as a flash game I actually remmeber playing something similar years ago.

I don't know if I'd say he was a "genius," but he did make a good game. People are just assholes and insulted him constantly because he mentioned how the quality of most Japanese games has decreased rapidly...which is true. His entire dilemma just demonstrates that developers who express their opinions will be met by a horde of angry man babies.

Being blunt can come off as being a douche, but like you said, the sentiment was the same and he shouldn't have been harassed (I don't see how you can call it anything other than harassment) for stating an opinion. Would people here enjoy it if the entire internent went on a rampage, constantly insulting and perhaps even threatening you for an opinion you expressed in the heat of the moment?

never played Fez (and never will now), so I am unable to judge his game-making ability or genius.

Phil Fish is most definitely NOT a genius, only a pretentious douchebag. Just the fact that he cancelled Fez 2 as a threat against the gaming media proves that he has no appreciation for game design. If he truly loved creating games and believed in his imagination and all of the games he created, then he wouldn't just cancel it because some people put him off. If you have a vision that you're inspired to make, you'd work as hard as you can to achieve it.

FEZ is great no doubt about it but its not THAT great

If he truly loved creating games and believed in his imagination and all of the games he created, then he wouldn't just cancel it because some people put him off. If you have a vision that you're inspired to make, you'd work as hard as you can to achieve it.
