Its simple. The PSP and DS are the handheld equivelants of these two consoles. DS, like Wii has a unique control system, awesome games, quite cheap etc etc etc. PSP, like the PS3 is a powerhouse with good graphics, ridiculous price, plays films, music  etc etc etc.

But as we can see, the DS has proved much more popular and a better seller than its rival, with some people not wanting to go for a film or music player for the simple fact they already have one. Are you really going to spend £400+ on great graphics and a long list of unneccesery functions? I mean really. Who the hell has two 1080p HD-TVs? What a waste of money. Of course, if your parents make more money than you do brain cells, and can actually afford this over-rated giant PSP, be my guest I wont stop you from getting it.

Surely this result from the handhelds will be reflected on the home consoles?

Disagree. Only a fraction of people buy handhelds in comparison to the number of people who buy consoles. And in my experience, casuals like pretty graphics:)

Too true sir

But most casuals cant afford to spend £450 whenever they want to. Its not that they dont want the PS3, some (most) people simply cant afford it

The appeal for a handheld system and the appeal for a home console are two different things.

Actually a lot of people buy handhelds. The DS has already out sold the GC.

While I agree that the handheld war in no way defines the console war but you would imagine the good will and new customers Nintendo have acuired with the DS will at least in some part transfer to the Wii.

I think the DS vs PSP is an indication that the Nintendo will do better this generation but in no way insures they will win.

I am getting a nintendo wii later this year, I already have a 360 and in a few hours I will be camping at toys r us to pre order a ps3

I am not a fanboy of any system -just the games-

only thing that will make people buy the wii is that it will have many games for the kids and many action mature games for the adults

but the whole "people are going to buy it cause it is so cheap, and people can't afford any of the other two consels is just bs"

even a 13 year old with a job that pays 5.50 an  hour could get a ps3 or a 360

and if an adult can't afford a ps3 or 360 cause of a tight job or bills/kids to pay for

than they should not even get a consel in the first place

no. you see, I never owned a handheld until DS. nintendo succeeded in not only bringing non gamers to buy handhelds but also gamers who wernt fans of handhleds. So that fraction that you speak of has grown. This is where the DS succeeded and the PSP failed. If it was just a psp that was released then I still wouldnt have a handheld.

People don't want their handheld to be a multimedia device. As for consoles? Well, the DVD player built into the PS2 was a MASSIVE SUCCESS. PSP did really good considering it was sonys first go at the handheld market, against nintendos complete domiance. Consoles are different though, with consoles, the playstation brand is king.

I don't think it's going to be the same this time round. I agree that the Handheld race is different to the consoles. As you stated some of the success of the PS2 was because it had DVD playback. Only this time round a new format is going against another and has yet to make the impact that DVDs make when they were first introduced. With that said, saleswise, it's still an open race.

but you see what he is saying right? if the 360 can't even sell 10 mill in one year, how can i sell 26 in two. as for psp vs ds, people want cheap little handhelds and most casuals no that anything made by nintendo for a handheld is going to have the same good titles on the new handheld. while to be honest, most gamers and people with a reason to use the psp's features bought it. i use it as a game/mp3 player. and i got some home movies on it too. now wii vs ps3, it depends. some or alot of people might look at those wii gameplay videos and say, thats stupid. some might some that its cool. but a gamer, he pick up that remote and will be "how do i work this thing. why isnt there any movement with the analogs/dpad." but i dont know. it might catch on. but my friend might call me names if i play it.

It'd be foolish to think that the Wii would win this generation vs the PS3....that being said I will say that it will make up a huge amount of ground on the Sony system.......PSM just had their launch issue for the PS3...and even they couldn't make it sound like the second coming.....

The handheld market is completely different, people don't look for graphics when they buy a handheld. Besides the handheld gaming market is much more casual, they sell more in the Walmart-Target market.

That wasn't what I meant, add all the sales of ps2, xbox and GC together and they will have sold more than the handhelds put together(not all of the gameboys put together but DS + PSP or the total sales of GBA). That shows that more people buy consoles than handhelds.

nintendo already owned the handhold market at the time the DS came out, right now it is sony who owns the console market with PS2. you do the thinking.

10 months later and it looks like the Wii is still prevailing over the PS3, probably by an even wider margin then before.
