From my own observation, "next gen" and current gen" are interchangeable terms, namely because there is no unified standard for how long that "new model freshness" lasts, so to speak. Basically, that as long as the system is the most current model out, it can be considered both current gen and next gen at the same time, until the replacement model comes out to take the title of next gen.
Here's how the pattern would follow:
* ModelB is just out, relegating the old ModelA to the position of last gen, while people "oooh and ahhhh" over the sparkling new features of ModelB that is clearly next gen
* Time has passed on the market, but since there is no defined "expiration" for what is next gen, and there is no other model yet as a prospect, ModelB is current in the truest sense of the word, but also still the newest currently available, so still is labeled as next gen
* Some years later, the companies start showing early pictures of the awesome ModelC that's to release next year, building the hype for what amazing capabilities it has you can't currently get... now that there is something substantiated about a new product to come, the newly revealed ModelC becomes the next gen in the eyes of everybody, so ModelB is now just current gen in the face of becoming obsolete
* Once ModelC actually releases, it is the realized next gen system on market, ModelB takes the backseat to last gen, while the ModelC still has that "new system smell" and the main attention and excitement of gamers, and more "ooohs and ahhhhs" ensue
* Even after a while, we see gamers still calling ModelC both current gen and next gen, until a ModelD is finally revealed... and so the cycle begins again
