Combat in WWI was waaay more brutal than WWII, because of the crude weapontry and lack of stealth. It would make a good FPS though, because of the terrain. If everybody rushed into each other with close quarter combat mixed with guns, that would be pretty intense. because WWII shooters are more distant, like you can shoot somebody from across the map. That wouldn't be the case here. Thoughts?

Run, either die by machine gun fire or make it to a trench and start stabbing people with a bayonet. Repeat for serverl hours, game done.

Nobody wants to do a WWI game because WWI was a shameful episode in humanity. There are games based off of WWII because it was a clear victory against an unambiguously bad enemy.

Agreed WW1 was so much more barbaric, though I think we have enough gritty shooters out and in the pipeline to last us a while...

you're missing grenades, mustard gas, flamethrower, barbed wire, bolt action rifles, and fighting in the middle. there was fighting inbetween the trenches. also, you forget that there were planes in WWI

At least WWII had a point. WWI was completely pointless.

There wouldn't be enough variety in gameplay for one to work. I suppose it would need a kickass plot and interesting characters and crysis graphics.

What are we going to do today? We're going to sit in this trench.
The causes of WW1 seem much more interesting than WW1 itself. Or did i miss something?

you kinda missed alot... WWI was the first "big" war to use automatic weapons, airplanes, zepplins, bolt action rifles, and mustard gas. nice try though

I was thinking about this the other day actually and I am not sure how you'd make the game play flow. If anything the genre would possibly suit an RPG better? Kinda like fallout 3?

I would love a civil war FPS done right. There have been a few bad ones...

I know the weapons aren't very exciting but if you could get enough players online (similar to MAG), it could be a fun way to relive some of the battles on a minor scale.

No not really. Well i have probably. I only know the red baron but it's kind of hard to build an FPS around it i think. But hey You know way more about WW1 than i do and if You say it's totally doable, then sure.

To accurately portray WW1 the game would be pretty blunt and horrific, infact WW1 and what went on in what was basically a poinless war is one of the few things that moves me to tears, especially considering members of my own family fought and were injured in the war. Truth is, a pointless salughter of young men on both sides for no real perceivable gain and on very thin grounds would not make a good game.

a game like that would need something to defend it from the murderous CoD blow, It needs something to stand out of the crowd.... Its art style could be grayscale with film grain and what not. that would make it a whole lot cooler, as long as they get the lighting down so thats not a chore to spot enemies. That and they would need incredble music that amps up the pressure and makes it feel like you're don'ing something when you are prowling throught the trenches. There would have to be an incridble plot and possibly great charaterswith great voice actingto grab people away from the CoD crowd. and along with the art style the graphics would have to be top notch with loads of vaierty. Adding to this it would have to be very graphic because WWI was. and with very solid game play and great online it would be amazing. I would get it.

a bad game? what if it was in the honor of the people that fought and it was a way of showing the horror and to never forget the people that participated in it? The game would be great.

A FP action/adventure game along the lines of Penumbra set in various battles across Europe (especially Verdun) would kick some serious ass. Let's say you play a spy. You could accomplish tasks like delivering messages, repairing things, maybe even planning attacks in a command room, fly a plane, some Zeppelin levels, some operations behind the frontlines... A carefully staged atmosphere and many "things" happening around you, like in COD, would make the game awesome.

Or something like The Saboteur set in London, including the night attacks, would be really cool.

Or something like Thief:P

Creating a FPS based on WWI would be a very difficult task. Yes, there are plenty of skirmishes and battles that could be covered in the game (First and Second, and Third Battles of Ypres, Somme, Verdun, Meuse-Argonne), but the gameplay, more or less, would be repetitive (i.e. Trench Warfare). The game would need to include some variety. For example, it would have to include submarine warfare and/or air combat. The games land combat would need to be broken down into both the Eastern and Western Fronts, possibly utilizing two separate protagonists for each front.

You do not understand, it seems. The motives and goals, no matter how you look at it, of the German and Imperial Japanese forces in WWII were evil. WWI was a pointless, insane affair where no side was actively seeking to exterminate a race/nation.

every war is pointless, the britain empire slaved the world with their colonialism and what was with black people in america at that time. Humans had to weak up, it was obviously that some one had to go too far.

And why you say germans but for japanese, the word imperial in front.

Saying every war is pointless is to be ignorant of major political, social, and economic aspects. WWII was fought to prevent a hostile Japanese takeover of the entire Pacific and to ensure that Hitler did not become the leader of all of the civilized Eastern hemisphere. WWI was fought because the royalty basically said to. Are you seriously going to tell me WWII was as pointless as WWI? The former has been called one of the very few justifiable wars, even. And I use the word Imperial Japanese because, well...that's what they were. They called themselves that. :?

actually: WWII was very much necessary to keep the entire world from falling under fascist controland is infact the only justified war we have ever been in. Hiroshima and Nagasaki was a but extreme but we did warn them, we said to them 'surrender or well nuke you' but they said 'lol no' so we did, and then we said 'surrender or well do it again' but they still said 'lol no' so we did. and then they know we were serious. it was either that or send in the army and have, probably 10x more people die in the fighting to take the island. now my question to you is : what is irakwar?

if a lot of WWi took place in trenches i don't think it will be that possible. Singleplayer would be hard to make realistic, but multiplayer would be easier. Like it could be packed with players and you respawn instantly as new waves of reinforcements move in. I think it would be sort of like Team Fortress 2 .

If they moved at all. It was not uncommon for a MkIV tank to stall after only going a few hundred meters, effectively making it a useless metal bunker in the middle of no man's land. Guess how much tanks crews looked forward to making a sprint to the friendly trenches when that happened.

[QUOTE="shadow_hosi"][QUOTE="EmperorZeruel"]if you remember from history class how ww1 was fought it wont be that fun. everyone sat in a trench and fought terere and neer realy gained any ground. Also tanks went realy slow, and i mean realy slow. They moved as fast as you can walk. Verge_6
i believe it was slower than that in some cases

If they moved at all. It was not uncommon for a MkIV tank to stall after only going a few hundred meters, effectively making it a useless metal bunker in the middle of no man's land. Guess how much tanks crews looked forward to making a sprint to the friendly trenches when that happened.

Problem is tanks were only used on a handful of occasions and were more often than not deathtraps for their crews.

God thats like wasting your one wish from god on a million pounds... why dont you just ask for talent or knowledge and the money would be never ending. We need more risk taking creative developers/publishers.

Nobody wants to do a WWI game because WWI was a shameful episode in humanity. There are games based off of WWII because it was a clear victory against an unambiguously bad enemy.PannicAtack
Umm, yeah, what he said.

WWI game would be boring since most of the fighting will take place in trenches ^^

I think it would make for a very good game. The hell levels in The Darkness felt really gritty and dark, which led to it having a very unique atmosphere that you usually don't see in WW2 games.

Run, either die by machine gun fire or make it to a trench and start stabbing people with a bayonet. Repeat for serverl hours, game done.

mutantleaguex

you're missing grenades, mustard gas, flamethrower, barbed wire, bolt action rifles, and fighting in the middle. there was fighting inbetween the trenches. also, you forget that there were planes in WWI

Or dying from several kinds of flu and other fun diseases, of course, you could take off in a plane, fly around for 2 minutes then come crashing down because you ran out of fuel

I don't think it'd be too good as a lot of WW1 was fought in the trenches and if you went over the trenches, you'd probably die.

Wouldn't make the greatest game.
