First off, I want to champion Fallout in general. I loved Fallout 3, its one of my best of gen games and i played every single DLC and explored every area of that game... it was a special game for me.

Usher in Fallout New Vegas...

Obviously, Im excited... so much so I even did the hype thread for this game on GS.

The game does some things SOOOO much better than F3. I love the openendedness of the game, I love the impact of companion characters. I love the whole feeling of the strip being this central hub of everything that is going on in the game and you constantly work around it. I could really go on and on and gush about many elements of this game, but I have such a major issue.

The games missions are so badly confusing and organized. part of this I recognize is due to me being a completionist and needing to do everything on one playthrough, but it goes deeper. some of these missions are downright broken and are based upon not talking to specific people at specific times or else you negate the mission and reboot. No clear objectives are given in many missions to paint a picture of wether you are doing something to help your motives with one faction or another. Im not a spoiler alert type of guy, but an example comes to mind... the quest, I put a spell on you, was an absolute disaster of a mission. so much so that I had 10 save files to cover my a$$ when everything fell apart, which it did several times. From when people didnt show up at different times or you werent given a clear objective as to what the crap your decissions meant or, if you talk to the wrong people your quest is canceled etc, missions like that are the true glitch of this game.

I havnt had a crash or hiccup to speak of, performance wise and yeah, I still love New Vegas, but sweet jesus in heaven get me to the end, because my brain is turning into oatmeal trying to get some fluidity in this game. In some ways it is so much better than Fallout 3, but in some key ways it just doesnt stack up.

Fallout NV was better in every way. It took the Fallout 3 formula and made it perfect.

Id agree if the actual mission structures and direction of the missions were a little more fleshed out. Im having a hard time defining it, but it was almost too open for its own good.

I love New Vegas, but some of the missions are SOOOO tedious! Currently I'm stuck on a mission where I have to retrieve three different items from three different locations. So I gotta run all the way across the map to get to these locations, and then search them when I'm inside. That crap gets old.

FNV is a very, very rough gem with much potential. I was a little disappointed at how it turned out, but I still think it's a great game.

Fallout New Vegas is awesome, it does everything better then Fallout3 except the radio stations imo. Much more of an rpg then Fallout3 was to imo.

I loved Fallout1, loved Fallout2, thought Fallout3 was not bad but not great.. and New Vegas I just cant get enough of.

The factions are awesome, the dialogue is fantastic, the story is good, the characters are enjoyable and its fun as heck to play. There is also sooo many missions to do, my 2nd time thru right now and its way differnt then the first time.

Not to mention the pc version has hundreds of awesome mods that make the game even better (more perks, some wicked guns, additions of green trees thru the wasteland and one of my personal favs is the one that brings in all the hair styles from Oblivion so you have WAY more options when making a character at the begining.

Very surprised how well thsi game turned out, I was expecting not much, but its wicked.

I felt the same way as TC on a few missions but after I beat it I read spoilers about it and sometimes when you kill someone and see MISSION FAILED out of nowhere it OMGWTF!? but after I read up about it I got the sense that you're not supposed to be able to finish every quest on one playthrough because you have to choose sides at some point and you can't do quests for factions youre at war with.

If youre a real completionist, TC, just finish the game as best you can and give it another playthough for whatever faction you ended up fighting against on your first playthrough. Once you settle down a bit I think you'll end up liking NV way more that FO3. I did...

Exactly, well said bud, this is something I noticed to. My 2nd time thru here I am goign abotu things differntly and ending up doing a bunch of things I never saw or did before. One of the awesome parts about this game is how much replay value it has without getting stale.

I love the game, it's a shame it shipped with so many bugs though, I couldn't even play the game for a couple days until the patch came out. I the characters and dialogue is fun, (The Yes man is amazing). Shame about the combat, it really fails in the shooting, yes VATS is fun as hell and bloody mess never gets old but when you run out of AP going back to regular combat isn't up to par.

Apart from that it's great, I'm an NCR guy now and on my second playthrough it's Caesar all the way.

So, I'm gathering that part of your complaint is that FO:NV doesn't necessarily spell out the consequences of your choices for you.

Personally, I think that's a good thing. NV isn't a game where you should be doing huge completionist playthroughs; rather, I think it's a good idea to do shorter, more focused playthroughs, then play again with a different character and make different choices, to see the full breadth of the options the game offers you; it's stunning, really.

You might feel disconcerted at its open endedness and malleability, but you probably only feel that way because you played so much Fallout 3, and, truth be told, FO3 was bloody terrible when it came to letting the player shape the main storyline.

Since we're friends now, where can I find those cool mods you mentioned?

Once I DL them, how do I apply them? Every time Ive tried I get a message asking me what program I wanna open them with and I choose wordpad and nothing ever seems changed. Im sure Im doing something wrong :?

They both have their pro's and cons. Exploring the Mojave Desert just isn't as fun as DC because a lot of the places are just empty (a shack with nothing in it for example, abandoned house, etc.). I've also encountered a few invisisble walls, seriously now, all you have to do is make a little hop, but the game won't let you? They really trick ya with the map size. As far as weapons go, New Vegas is definitely better. The radio was better in FO3 as well in my opinion. Overall, theyre about the same when you measure their qualities, and as far the storyline goes, I don't really care about it. I just have fun doing whatever :P

Being able to do EVERY quest on each playthrough irregardless of your character build is poor roleplaying design. That's an ADVANTAGE of New Vegas, not a flaw.

I get your point and maybe it is just me trying to do everything all at once. Im more than 70 hours in and i still have open quests and open im not even close to the end from what it seems. maybe three steps into the yes man quest line. (I decided to go this way because i can only really trust myself in this game). It is really only one part of my frustration though. I just did the quest about the water farms and finding the radiation issues in vault 34 and OH MY GOD im tired of running around in damn circles all friggin day following the most terrible location finding map ever concieved. seriously its almost 2011 and im still following a tab on the bottom right that not only gives no sense of depth in a vault but on this particular quest only takes you to the overseers door and does nothing, i mean absolutly nothing to give you any idea about needing codes or finding secret computers or pumping water out of the vault or ANYTHING!!!! Im a pretty old school gamer and being 32 years old ive seen my share of games with high ambition and the need to have a game guide on ready, but jeeze this is ridiculous sometimes. I shouldnt spend two hours in a vault guessing what to do next on a minor side quest. its maddening!!!!! and DONT GET ME WRONG, when the game gets rocking it is easily AAA+. I love this game and I hate it at the same time!!! ahhhhhhhhh.

You do know this sentence is inconsistent, right? Fallout 3 has nothing to do with "Fallout in general".

That aside, I agree, NV is so superior to FO3 it's absolutely beyond me how the reviewers gave FO3 higher scores.

I would say Fallout 3 is the better adventure game of the two. New Vegas however, is definitely the best Fallout game.

I own all the fallouts, I was merely stating that I love the Fallout IP and further, I love the "Fallout 3" concept. I know that purists to fallout have major issues to what the franchise has become, but im not one of them. I love the whole fallout library.

I only hated doing companion quests :x. I mean, they're triggered by doing certain things or going certain places in the game, and god knows how the hell I trigger these besides being at the right place at the right time (I played the game about three times using my usual routine, and sometimes it just won't trigger because I've either been there before, or...well, no idea. The only thing I know is that if you're enemies with Ceasar, then everyone's your friend :P). Any other complaints like my autosaves being overwritten back to level 2, or the framerate issues and random crashing has already been fixed.

The patch did seem to sure up performance a bit. I even like the labels for where companions are now. Imagine a next gen fallout? this franchise has the best chance to truly upgrade everything next gen. not just a fresh coat of paint but a real upgrade to everything. Ill be watching elder scrolls 5 closely.

Yeah, I was expecting New Vegas to be a copy/paste (and by Obsidian too...who didn't exactly have a good rep at the time :P) and ended up suprised how glued to the game I was. That alone almost makes the rough launch forgivable. And I'm pretty psyched for TES 5 as well...although I may wait a week or two before buying it. What can I say, after toying around with some mods, I'm addicted to nude characters .

And the thing about New Vegas' missions is... you won't be able to do every one of them, because you either won't have the skills, or aren't sided with the right factions in order to participate. I haven't completed the game yet... but I've already come across several missions that I couldn't do because I didn't have the right skills.

The beautiful thing about this game is that you can't have a "do everything" character, and if you have a different build, you will have a different experience every time. That is role-playing. I'm 26 hours in on my first character and just got to the Strip and met Mr. House.

So I got all the way to the Hoover damn in my 360 playthrough, but ultimately got disgusted with it after I patched it and the damn thing still crashed, So I probably won't finish the 360 version. No matter, I got the PC version off the Steam sale and I'm glad I did. First of all the ability to widen the FOV is to me is a godsend. And the mods......Hell yeah. I'm going to probably spend as much time as I did playing the 360 version screwing around with the mods.

i think F3 was kinda better than New vegas. at least on the quest departament, every quest on NV incluiding the main storyline ones were incredibly short and easy, the only quest i really liked in NV was the one u had to go to like 3 vaults to retrieve some items. but don't get me wrong. im having a great time with new vegas lol i just wish there were more dungeon-like based quests.

Not being able to do EVERYTHING is a good thing, it makes each play through a different experience each time. NV is easily better than FO3, which I also loved. The Rep system, faction system, weapon mods, and even companions that fight with you competently make it far better. Also, am I the only one who actually like the Mojave Wasteland far more than the Capitol Wasteland? I also liked the Radio better too.

I keep harkening back to the comment that Todd Howard made upon the release of FO3... "Great games arent made, great games are played", which I took as, we can think of a million and one "things" to do to a game but in the end it is still a game that must be enjoyed to succeed. Where FNV struggles for me is in continuity of flow. when I was a level 30 badass in FO3, I knew it... I roamed around handing out beat downs with clear objectives and a certain flow about where ive been, where im going and whats ahead of me. In New Vegas I have moments of extreme flow, mixed with moments of banging my head against a wall saying, "what the?" "why the" "who the" "when the" HELL is going on here?!?!?!?! I want to thank everyone for the feedback so far in this thread btw. I love when we can actually discuss and be critical of something we love and still be respectful. good diggin!!

NV is probably better than Fallout 3, because I haven't had a corrupted save yet. But seriously, It's a damn good game. The only thing Fallout 3 did better is the radio stations in my opinion. If only I could hear the Black Mountain radio station all the time because Best Friend Tabitha's rants are hilarious. That and I'm friggin tired of hearing "Johnny Guitar" on every station. :|

OH GOD YES. This is probably my biggest problem with the whole game so far, and I'm like 10 hours in. The repetition of songs across radio stations wouldn't be so bad if Big Iron was played more, but Johnny Guitar... Ugh...
