I remember the days of going buy 2 get 1 free used game hunting at gamestop and being overwhelmed with the sheer number of games to choose from. The PS2 section of games pretty much took up all of the space in the store.

Literally over a thousand games to choose from with big hits like MGS2, FFX, GTA to obscure shit like magic pengal. Everytime I thought I knew every game available I would look through the library and find something new and interesting to try out.

We will never have something like this again from one console. Literally every genre was covered with a long list of amazing games.

Playstation 2 probably has one of the best lineups for a console ever.
I would go #1 PS 2 and #2 X360

PS3 blows the 360 away. It was close in the beginning but PS3 took over late.

Your just describing nostalgia to how you used to go and pick games when you were younger, the PS2 just happend to be your console of choice at the time.

It was no different a feeling going to video game stores or blockbuster and picking a Xbox or GameCube game, there were shelves dedicated to them.

Internet being less common helped with the experience here, because you were more likely to take a punt on a game based on its cover and the write up on the back of the case.

Around mid to late generation when I got my first job I bought all 3 consoles so when ever I went blockbuster, or gamestation or any other video game store I coukd literally choose what ever game took my fancy regardless of its system.

Good times

Too early to determine.

The PS2 sold some 154 million worldwide and a huge amount of those games came in the second half of the console's life due to every company having already paid for their PS2 engine development costs. That gave companies the ability to cheaply make all sorts of titles that would not have been financially viable earlier in the PS2's life.

The PS4 is just hitting 80 million worldwide and is selling at roughly the same rate as the PS2. The same development financials will be true for the PS4 as it moves into its second half of its life - amortized development costs combined with a massive installed base.

Additionally, developers and publishers know that Sony isn't going to be dumping the console and screw them - like other console makes have a habit of doing - giving them confidence to keep targeting games in the later years of the console's life.

Nostalgia has nothing to do with it.

The PS2 had 2.5 times the number of games developed for the system compared to the GameCube and Xbox.

Not surprising since both the GameCube and Xbox took a dirtnap after only four years on the market while the PS2 went on selling tens of millions of consoles for years.

@gfxpipeline: there was several shelves full of games for each system.

The PS2 did have more shelf space but the other two still had large portions of the store.

When you said going to GameStop and being overwhelmed by the sheer number of games, and getting buy 2 get 1 free used game, that's nostalgia.

I'm guessing you were younger when the PS2 was out?

Things were different to how they are now ?

Is nostalgia

I believe he's talking about the fact that, since a lot of PS2 systems were sold, there were A LOT of used games, which made the prices go down. And also: @gfxpipeline: "The PS2 had 2.5 times the number of games developed for the system compared to the GameCube and Xbox."

I'm sure there is some nostalgia there, but these things did happen, there's no 2 ways about it.

Also, "it's never gonna happen" is just... pessimistic :D

It would surprise me, if someone came up with homebrew for it. An n64 emulator has already appeared in the store before. And there's emulators online that you can use with the xbox edge.

I don't know why anyone would bother trying to dispute something so easily checked.

The GameCube and Xbox died in their fourth year. The PS2 went on to sell another 70-80 million consoles over the following years.

Console developers ended up making 2.5 times the number of games for the PS2 than the GameCube and Xbox.

There's nothing to debate. Nothing to do with 'nostalgia'.

@gfxpipeline: high streets in the UK didn't reflect that, without constantly visiting forums or websites that report sales you wouldn't have known how far ahead the PS2 was in sales and total games.

Yep PS2 was far better. Remember when Resident Evil and Final Fantasy was actually good. Now its horrible games for new gen casuals. I take any MGS from PS2 over V anyday, same as i take any original God of War over that new cinematic movie trash.

PS4 will never reach PS2 sales, never.

Yeah I bought a PS2 at launch and loved it. Oni was an instant classic when I played that. I really loved my PS2 back in the day. I couldn't care less about "best console" or putting a hierarchy to them. I had just as much fun on Sega Genesis before PS2.

the greatest thing was the architecture, it was built from the ground up, not based on anything else, So they could achieve max results in game with respect to the hardware, that why during the 360/ps3 days it was so hard to emulate on PC unless you had a top of the line pc.

PS4 is better than PS2 in every possible way. Most PS2 games aged terribly, and i don't even mean graphics wise.

Agreed, I tried to play MGS 2 some years back, certainly not up to the level of MGS 1 for the PS1.

FFX, killing monster piranhas with a blitzball underwater? Facepalm.

Only things that I felt was fun was GT3 and GT4.

I remember when I read magazines about the upcoming Dreamcast and PS2, the Dreamcast looked badass and the PS2 was yet to release but they released a smudged picture to keep the hype alive. When they released the picture of PS2 It was mostly "ok" but the part underneath was off-center so it looked a bit strange to me.

MGS2 is timeless, especially if you play MGS1 first (which aged worse than MGS2, but it still remains monumental).

Most games today are essentially beefed up PS2-style games anyway. Most of the 3d action genres were defined in that era, e.g. Devil May Cry.

Eh. The PS2 was by far the worst designed console of that gen hardware wise. Really, not unlike the PS3 in that regard, but hey at least the PS2 was cheap. With PS3 they used "unique" hardware that made it's price unnecessarily expensive at launch, which doomed them at the start.

Yes. I believe there are people who still haven't grasped how Sony is repeating the success of the PS2 with the PS4.

The PS4 is at the same point the PS2 was at the four year mark. Both consoles sold about 80 million.

The details of the competing consoles is different but essentially the same. At the four year mark for the PS2, the GameCube and Xbox died leaving game developers free to target almost all their resources to the 80 to 154 million PS2 installed base over the second half of the gen.

The Switch isn't really competing with the PS4. It's once again a machine primarily getting Nintendo first party support with third party developers dumping occasional downgraded ports. And the Xbox One is effectively dead and irrelevant. Whether Microsoft pulls the plug or not will have little effect on the PS4.

A year from now the PS4 will hit 100 million. Does the PS4 go on to reach 150 million? Who knows but a 100+ million installed base is a monster that every single console developer is going to be their primary focus for a long time.

It was. I would consider myself a "Sony fanboy", but hardware wise the GameCube was probably the best designed of that gen, with the XBOX being the most powerful. The PS2 was the weakest and it wasn't close. Honestly, I have no idea why it dominated.

But as the PS2 was my main console for basically the entire gen, I guess I was part of the irrational dominance of PS2.

Then you don't have a clue about console hardware.

The PS2 destroyed the Xbox in floating point and framebuffer power(why the Xbox couldn't handle port of MGS2 without bogging down).

The GameCube had it lighting fast drive and fast RAM.

The Xbox had its multipass rendering for 'teh shiny' and some additional AA.

The amazing thing about the incredible PS2 hardware is it was roughly half the manufacturing costs compared to Microsoft's braindead and horrendously costly 'throw a bunch of overpriced commodity desktop PC parts in a big ugly black box' and call it a console approach.

Kutagari is a fucking hardware god. To create such a lean piece of hardware that could pump out the same poly counts as a system that came out a year later and twice the manufacturing cost is one of the greatest feats in the history of console hardware.
