We're Still Getting Dark Souls Clones

This one being the latest.

The studio behind this made Lords of the Fallen, which wasn't brilliant. It was pretty much Dark Souls with bigger shields. Now, these fellas decide to make their next game a BLOODBORNE clone.

Although the combat feels much slower than Bloodborne. Maybe it's because I took the heavy class. So, I'm fucked. But whatever.

I'm not complaining. This shit happens. Good and popular stuff. People will cash in on that. Try their own hand at it.

I just think it's funny that we're still getting them. And with this game, especially, the formula has become so old. Especially redoing shit. I mean, I don't get the punishment for that. Just run past everything. If they were to announce Bloodborne 2 at E3, I would sincerely shrug.

Also, to make it system wars worthy, I'm pretty sure it sold some copies.

I dunno if this is worse than COD or DOTA clones, but yeah it's still as uninspired as ever.

Plus I don't really like Dark Souls.

I liked Lords Of The Fallen. Solid clone. Like some of the better Mario ripoffs back in the day, I'm cool with it. Getting it free on PSN probably made me a tad lenient towards though.

Will keep an eye on this one. It scares the hell out me when you Dark Souls is such an old formula. Because... it is, at this stage! I guess! Where does all the time go :P

I need moar dark souls. The 2D games seems to capture the formula more accurately though.( Salt and Sanctuary, Hollow Knight etc.)

I don't get the hate lord of the fallen receives, it is a decent game.

I don't see people hating on Nioh for using Demon Soul formula.

I haven't played Bloodborne or a souls game yet so it doesn't bother me.

I didn't realise Dark Souls was the original 3rd person hack and slash.

Anyway I watched a trailer for this a few weeks back and my initial thought was meh!. Then when I finished watching the video my final thoughts on it were meh!

I have played quite a bit of it and I find it much better than Bloodbourne and Lords of the Fallen.

The depths of the upgrades and combat really make it stand on its own.

I really like how if you want one of the mods the enemy is wearing you can actually knock it off and take it.

Also, the premise is pretty interesting and the locations look really good, not samey like most souls-like games.

It will probably get knocked for its janky-ness but it is a pretty good Souls clone.

They definitely learned from Lords of the Fallen............and its harder.

I think itll get 7 or 8 because it does feel kind of stiff and janky unless they improved a lot from the demo i played.

Exactly. Nioh has differences and it is a GOTY contender for me but it is very much a Souls inspired game. I have actually been reading up on Surge because I like the idea of a tech Souls like game. I like this setting more than another Dark Souls/Bloodborne one. That shit is beat to death.

PS+ had Lords of the Fallen for free one month. The controls are exactly like dark souls. Looking forward to their next clone.

It looks fairly dull in the same way that Lords of the Fallen looked dull, and hey look at that, it played dull too almost like it was made by a studio that didn't grasp the smaller things that make a Souls game work.

The series getting imitators isn't a bad thing. Death's Gambit looks tight, Salt n Sanctuary is genuinely very good, and Nioh actually has some sweet mechanical ideas of its own (Ki Pulse being the tits, and weapon stances).

I think they've passed the point of being clones, and it's now a genre. Like Metroidvania.

This is good. It's not like the market is saturated with them. I will probably not play it but yeah.

I love how these subgenres get taken up by other devs and grow into something bigger. Hopefully a Western dev picks up DW system someday....

these guys have no idea how to rip off dark souls.The simply don't understand what makes DS good.

Almost all of the previews have been generally positive, mentioning everything from better combat, intriguing story and premise, and loot/upgrade systems that make it hard to put down.

Ive only been following this game for a few months but it seems like one of those hidden gems.

You should watch/read some previews on it.

As long as the combat and mechanics are tight, why not? More games to choose from is always a good thing.

Wish everyone worshiped Armored Core instead of slobberin' all over Dark Souls nutz! Could you imagine 4 next gen Armored Corez and multiple rip offs?! But noooooo, instead every other candycrush angry birds player is cramming DS down their throAts like toasty cheese its! More giant robots goddamnitt!! I wanna live in the dimension where Armored Core happened!!!

This game looks interesting. I haven't given this game any attention.

The only one I'd agree with is the upgrade/loot system. Combat is decent but not spectacular and the story is, well, a video game story. And not in the good way like the Souls series.

@scea: It's not terrible, but just from that video, you can tell there is some lack of polish in that combat. Lol

The world can never have enough Dark Souls clones. If they are bad we won't play them.

nearly 10 years later and we're still getting CoD4 clones. yeah, they got some new shiny bells and fancy whistles but i would still consider them clones. don't expect this copycat trend to go away. the trend of keeping up with trends is everlasting lol

As a fan of the series, I don't mind them. Hopefully it will be good at least.

Why not? People got sick of God of War clones. I enjoyed Lords of the Fallen myself. And people are loving Nioh. Yeah, why not?

Games which are good can probably get away with a few clones. I personally appreciated Dark Souls but couldn't get much further than like 40% of the game, while my brother thoroughly enjoyed it.

I've been watching some of The Surge on Twitch and I must say I think it looks very cool. The gameplay looks pretty tight and fluid. I dig the whole Dark Souls but with robots and mechs vibe. I may end up getting this myself. It seems to be a bit of a pleasant surprise for me as I never really followed any info on this game before and that doesn't happen to me too often.

I regard this as a good thing, yeah you get some bads but as long as you get some good copies, why not?

Plus usually they have some interesting takes on their own.

Same with people saying C&C clone they mean Dune 2 clone, why do people always forget the first game to do something cool :(.

Maybe stop acting like dark souls invented the genre, it only popularized it.

It's a new genre. Some call it soulslike but I'd rather call it HBF: hard but fair.

Must be growing pains. I'm sure every shooter after Doom was called a Doom clone. Now we just call them first person shooters.

This. The name soulslike is being thrown around. It'll probably stick.

That would be a stupid ass name that would hardly only work for just that type of game, considering plenty of hard games have existed, and have been more fair than the Souls stuff by comparison. Soulslike at least works, HBF is right up there with "character action" as far as useless genre title.

Great ideas, but execution is just ok. Love the implants system and how I can basically respec at a moments notice.

Also the combat is a bit clunky. Buying an engagement ring for your attacks sucks.

Garbage like Bloodborne. Only Nioh did it right.

But it did happen, there are tons of Armored Core games. That said though, I am ready for a new one. And I hope it's not as multiplayer focused as AC5/Verdict Day.
