Handhelds...

Agree or disagree? I'm more of the notion that Westerners are just not committed to handheld development as the Japanese.

Aside from a select few companies like 5th Cell who made Scribblenauts and WayForward Games, there aren't much Western companies who have made great to epic handheld games and are committed to it. BioWare made an RPG for DS which was a Sonic game and look at how that turned out lol PSP is more praised for its JRPGs and Japanese games not really handheld versions of console games developed by Westerners like GoW.

With that in mind, if Vita can't secure the Japanese on board for its development, it will be up to Western devs to make great games for it. The question will be if big companies like EPIC, BioWare, Ubisoft, etc. will get serious with it especially that smartphones are getting big nowadays. If they too won't, Vita is literally doomed. There is a Bioshock for Vita though there's a high chance it might not be 100% original like Infinite is from Bioshcok 1 and 2.

There are some very very talented western devs who work on handhelds, but I see why there are so few. Why would you make a game for a handheld when you can make it bigger and better for consoles. Its all about where the sales go though. Looking at devs like Sony bend and Ready at Dawn though, I'd say its tough to argue that its just the incompetence of the west.

It's not incompetence. It's lack of commitment like what BioWare did for that Sonic RPG. Ready at Dawn are sort of just making handheld versions of console games. I have played Daxter and the two GoW for PSP. While they're great and fun games, they really don't feel like a handheld game. That's why i think 5th Cell and WayForward are the best Western devs for handhelds.

That's fair. I guess its all about what your looking for. To be honest, I like handhelds not because I play them on trips but I get to play them somewhere else in my house. Like downstairs with the TV. If your looking for that handheld experience most western devs don't want to deliver it, they want to make something bigger, like Uncharted, Peace Walker, Resistance, God of War, or Daxter. They are great games in their own right though.

Which means if Vita continues to fail sales-wise in Japan, it is also doomed in the West if the Japanese will abandon it?

Probably.

I can only imagine Japanese-made games made up for 99% of all software sold on the PSP/DS

Not only that, but the PSP (in particular) was selling terribly in the US for the last few years. Heck, I can't recall the last time Sony even commented on their NA sales for the PSP.

The Vita needs Japanese support like the PSP has.

Westerners are not just good at shooters and i wouldn't like for the Western support to be just full of shooters. I wish Western indie devs would work for handhelds to produce games like LIMBO and Bastion but smartphones are clearly more attractive to them.

Western devs are doing great this generation. A lot of them can afford to make bid budget titles for consoles/PC. Japanese devs are sadly losing (quite frankly I think this is where the most creativity comes from in gaming) out to the Western devs. Back in the PSOne and PS2 JRPGs flourished, but it was cheaper back then. Today you'll find a lot of JRPGs are handheld games because it isn't as risky as making a game for consoles. I hate to see this happen to Japanese companies, but that's just the way it is.

EDIT: Oh, and I wouldn't say Western developers aren't good at making handheld games. It's just not where a lot of their focus goes into when it comes to making video games. So, no, I don't agree Westerners aren't good at making handheld games. They're doing pretty good with phone games.

There is still no Western made phone game that can match Professor Layton and Ghost Trick. Heck Westerners have made better games on handhelds than smartphones "for now". I don't see anything in smartphones that can match Scribblenauts, Drawn to Life, Shantae, etc. and i have my Galaxy Note.

Was it released for iphone apps? Even still, it was mainly developed for the Nintendo DS just like Ghost Trick even though they were eventually ported to smartphones to generate more profit.

Actually the assertion was westerners are not good at making games for handhelds. Japan does not come into it. Japan is irrelevant. Can the west make good games for handheld devices? Well a finely crafted game provides solid evidence that this post is nonsense. I have many other examples. Contre Jour for example.

It's on phone and ipad. Like ghost trick. It's irrelevant where they were first introduced. They are on smartphones now. Much cheaper than on your handheld.

I've said it before, I'll say it again, dedicated handheld devices are on their way out. Unless Nintendo and Sony directly compete with the smartphones completely they are destined to lose.

That's not an assertion as i was asking a question whether that is the case and i have presented my notion that Westerners are just not committed to it except for a few companies. Bioware a top Western dev made a junk handheld game which was a Sonic RPG. EPIC meanwhile opted for iPhone for their Infinity Blade game instead of handhelds. Japan is not irrelevant as i'm making a comparison and it is obvious the Japanese are more committed to handheld development than the Westerners.

There are lies, damned lies and statistics. You honestly think that handhelds have a strong future? Well, time will tell. At this stage, I could be wrong, or I could be right. All I see is everyone around me has a smartphone, where you can get countless more games than handhelds for a fraction of the cost and many of them are of similar quality to full handheld releases. In some instances games come out for both. It does not make economic sense to assume handhelds will rule the roost for much longer.

Why are you bothering with me? Sanctimonious prick Because we were having a discussion!

Typical of this board. Play the man not the argument!

Damned lies? Care to share your own evidence to prove such lies? Or are you just gonna make personal observations to prove your point which is weak? There's no doubt smartphones are affecting handhelds but 3DS' sales right now is at high not just in Japan. Nintendo is doing the best it can throwing out games like another 2D Mario title this year and a Pokemon (which will surely move units no matter how tired you are of these franchises), Kid Icarus Uprising, Luigi's Mansion 2, Paper Mario 3D, etc. People will pay high price for Nintendo's games that's for sure and third parties will still follow like Capcom, Square Enix, WayForward, and Renegade Kid. Sony's Vita on the other hand.....

Tetris, while not specifically designed for a handheld, is probably the most played handheld game ever made.

Compared to both the quantity and quality of Japanese developed handheld games, the Westerners are beaten :P
