I was very against some of the games this gen mainly because they ruined their past entries in the series. I'm Mainly talking about these games:

FF13(what the h square-enix?)

Castlevania Lords Of Shadows(God Of War rip off)

RE5(forced co-op and super hulk chris)

ME2(fail effect 2)

After various game playthroughs with these games, I managed to enjoy and appreciate their unique experience that they had to offer. I still feel thedisapointment they left behind though, but they in the end still managed to feel like good games to me. I mainly felt the dissapointment because these games had amaizing past entries that made an impact on me as a gamer. Formulas were changed, feeling swere confronted and honestly I think people here tend to not give games more of a chance to redeem themselves.

Have you had a similar experience sw/ Please do share.

Half Life 2. I played it for a good time but thought it was really boring. So I quit but later tried it again just to get it finished. And it was a decision I don't regret at all.

Uncharted. Bought the game, hated it. Sold it. Bought it again a month later, hated it more. Sold it again.

Bioshock. Played for four hours, fell asleep from lack of challenge. Woke up, played for another hour before saying "nuts to this".

I don't think you get it. What I mean is games that you hated or felt dissapointed with but ended up loving them or appreciating them.

Yeah, this is what I'm talking about. Games that changed something you loved before and now you learnt to love again.

Hmmm, well I don't think it technically counts, but: I did originally buy Half Life for the PC in probably 1999, or so, but never actually beat more than an hour of it since I was far too busy with the multiplayer to even care. Then later on I had thought my parents trashed the game (for some reason), so I couldn't play it on a new computer we got. I borrowed Half Life for the PS2 from a friend, and absolutely hated it......Well, I didn't hate it as much as I hated that darn dualshock controller! Anyways the game was basically ruined, but I did beat it on the PS2 for the first time ever. *skip ahead a year or two* I found my original Half Life box set somewhere in our house, and I decided to give the game a proper PC playthrough, and it went on to be my 2nd most favorite FPS (sp-wise) of all time following HL2 :P Such a good game.

Probably the standard Naruto: Ultimate Ninja franchise. I hated the first game, but the third game made me ask myself "why did I hate it?" A shame Ultimate Ninja 4 was the true disappointment in that franchise.

Kingdom Hearts 2 comes to mind. I thought it was dogcrap when I first played it several years back, and I loved the first Kingdom Hearts. But I never got rid of the game, and earlier this year I gave it another chance. Even though I still think the gameplay was shaky, I wound up loving the game and it got me interested in the franchise again

In general I'm very bad at judging demos. I thought the Batman demo was pretty meh for example. Now I'm kind of hyped about that franchise :D!

The only glaring example is Kirby Dream Course when I was younger. Man did that game piss me off, I hated it. I told my brother i hated it and i think it hurt his feelings because he bought it for me. I felt bad so I decided to give it a second chance. Ended up loving that damn game...

Three franchises immediately jump to mind and that's Killzone, Resistance, and Gears. Loved R:FoM, hated the second, enjoyed the 3rd. Hated Killzone, loved KZ2, enjoyed KZ3. Loved GeoW, did not like GeoW2, love GeoW3.

FF13. what a horrible, horrible game. Gave it three tries though.

Gears of War - Could never really get into the "hide behind a wall and shoot" play mechanic.

Resident Evil 4. What happens when you really want to turn a survival horror game into a 3rd person shooter. Fail.

After RE4 which i consider a big reset on RE series and my biggest upset ever , i gave a chance to RE5.

All this hype about how different from RE4 will be and will go back to its roots etc ... I felt for all this hype , preorder the game and i ended up UNINSTALL it on chapter 4 out of boredom !! My first Resident evil game ( I OWN ALL since day 1 of original RE release on PS , i used to be hardcore fan till RE4) i didnt finish! Insane

Deus Ex: HR. It has a side-quest that is completely broken, stops dead in its tracks. I decided just to skip that quest entirely and continued on later.

Super Mario Galaxy

I thought that with the Wiimote it would have horrid controls so I didn't play it at first, then I loved it.

The best example if this for me was with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time; I got this game for my birthday back in 1998 and it was the first Zelda game I had ever played. After about an hour of playing it I thought it was boring and silly, and allowed a friend of mine to "borrow" it because I had no intention of ever playing it again. A few months later after reading tons of stellar reviews for that game, and hearing the friend I lent my copy to rave about how amazing it was for months, I asked for my copy back and gave it another shot. Long story short, Ocarina of Time is my second favorite game of all time now, and I have played it from start to finish about 5-times now.

Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. I've tried playing through it three-four times, farthest I ever got was the Great Bay Temple before I gave up. It's the time system that really threw me off, it made me feel like I had to rush through the game, like I couldn't stop for a moment and just walk around. I know a lot of people praise it as a good Zelda game, which is why I have given it 3-4 tries, but I just can't get myself to like that game. I want to, it's just not working for me.

Plenty. I was very cynical and pessimistic throughout 2009 and 2010, which lead me to dislike a lot of games. Specifically ME2 and ACII... both games which now that I've gone back to them, I love. Then there is Nintendo as a company that I gave a second chance, and was the biggest turn-around in my gaming career after my stepping down as king-cow back in 2005.

Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes.

I started out with Metroid Prime 2 and got bored. Same with Metroid Prime until I tried it again a few months after I tried it and I started getting the hang of it.

Baldur's Gate 2.. It was tedious, intimidating in how it just dropped you on your ass.. And this was from some one who knew the DnD 2nd edition ruleset that BG2 ran off.. Ultimately I kept with it, after trying again later on.. And actually enjoyed it.. I wouldn't call it my favorite RPG, but it was one of the most memorable.. I honestly just can't stand party management rpgs in the end simply put it detracts away from the main character, and really plays nothing like a PnP dnd game from a player expective that I loved.

Vanquish. I rented it shortly after it came out, played it about half way through but didn't like it much and then sent it back. After all the praise here on SW I decided to give it another rental and beat it, but I still think it's mediocre at best and I wouldn't want to play it again.

Super Meat Boy. At first I was like nah I don't play games for punishing difficulty, the levels themselves seem plain, but then I got it when it was on a Steam sale and 80 hours later I have all achievements besides "clear world x without dying once" ones.

I don't know what it was exactly but the game just grabbed me. At first I just wanted to play it for a while to try it out, the levels just felt bland, but after getting used to the weird controls the game opens up and shows pretty good design. I think it's the sense of accomplishment that was addictive and felt satisfying, otherwise the game isn't really "goty material".

Going for the time attack leaderboards is completely useless though because you are allowed to use secondary characters with varying properties and physics, I consider that to be "cheating". I mean I spent 80 hours on mastering Meat Boy's controls, I don't feel like spending hours trying to master the other ones too.

dragon quest 8... back when it came out.. it started out slow.. like 1 xp per kill which kinda turned me off how slow the progression was... went back to it about 6 months later and got through that hiccup, finished it.. kept playing it even after i finished it , collected bunch of stuff etc...and its one of my favourite games of all time
