Totally not this gen, but thanks for reminding me of the name of that awesome game. I actually asked around here some time last year, trying to remember that game, and no one could figure it out, based on my vague description of distant memories.Â
I'm glad someone finally mentioned King Of Fighters 13. I would add Soul Calibur 4, and to a lesser extent 5. Mortal Kombat The Last Blade 2 (I know it's not this gen, but it was just put up on virtual console and is one of my all time favorites)
Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown The King of Fighters XIII Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II/Extend Dead or Alive 4 Tatsunoko vs Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars Super Smash Bros Brawl Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Tekken 6 Skullgirls Dragon Ball Z Burst Limit Capcom's big three (MVC3, SF4, SFxT) suck ass, as do MK9, SC4/5, etc.

Injustice: Gods Among Us, simply because I don't tend to like fighting games but really enjoyed Injustice. It's not the best fighting game for sure, but it's certainly my favourite.
