How about revisiting Shadow Moses in MGS 4? Replaying the same stage you played from one of your favorite games, but updated for new hardware, was one of the coolest things to see and experience.

Although I wasn't great at that them, I really enjoyed the Zelda Breath of the Wild shrines. It was a nice change of pace from the regular world, and I really loved the music.

The 1v1 duels in Ghost of Tsushima are fantastic. Intense, but fun. But what makes these truly cool? It's the sword combat. Very engaging. Better than anyone who's attempted it before.

And the last one I will include is the fictionalized Shibuya from The World Ends With You! Has a very punk type theme to it. It's hard to share a video because the Nintendo DS graphics don't translate well to today's screens lol.

How about you, SW? What are the coolest video game levels you played?

Coolest game I've played recently is Genesis Noir.

Also the beginning of Quantum Break is pretty cool.

Kratos vs Bulder (Baldr) in God of War 4 was really epic cause at first, I thought he was just a drunk wondering man until later on I found out who he really was:

And also, entering the first Cauldron in Horizon: Zero Dawn was really awesome as how detail the environment is in this level:

Probably still Dark Souls. Coming back to firelink from Undead Burg sewer or Blight Town was quite an experience.

The Microwave scene and final boss fight of Metal Gear Solid 4 is the best level in gaming IMO.

One of the things love about OG Tomb Raider, it ran on antiquated hardware , we are multiple (hundreds?) of times more powerful. Yet it's levels have an illusion of scale that feels grandiose in scope than any Ubisoft open-world bowl.

Madubu Gorge kind of epitomize that idea, even if the rafting is a pile of shit.

@uninspiredcup: Thing about those kayak controls. They get a bad rap, but they're actually really precise with practice. It's all about trajectory and anticipation. Plus one should be using a keyboard.

Bloodborne - Cainhurst Castle: It's a hidden area that most players initially overlook, yet a fascinating place where horrifying ghosts to settle in a highly crafted frigid castle. There is also a very difficult boss, who is closely associated with Bloodborne's lore. When I first visited there, I was literally trembling with surprise.

Wow, I have played countless games with cool levels so I am just gonna mention a few.

The Aquatic Stage almost in the beginning of Donkey Kong Country.

The dreaded blue stage near the end of Bruce Lee (Commodore 64). Made me cower in fear. Yet it was awesome.

Splinter Cell (first game). The CIA level.

@Macutchi: Reminds me of Legacy Of Kain

Think Zelda was technically the first game to do the They Live thing with morphing level layout? Prob some game that done earlier missing.

@uninspiredcup: probably a few dude, i can't think of many off the top of my head. the beauty with the clockwork mansion is not just the intricacy of the design but the ingenuity in catering to the many play styles dishonored offers you. not sure if any game before has come close to what d2 does in that regard.

The number of player types and playstyles we have to think about in level design is pretty big. It includes low or high chaos, combat or stealth and shadow, non-lethal or lethal, exploration or playing without reading a single note, playing with ‘no powers’ mode or without markers, series fans or total new-comers, and any combination of them all.

article from one of arkane's founders on the level

for me the clockwork mansion isn't even the clear stand out level in d2, there's several contenders in the mix. crack in the slab, the one with the time piece that lets you flit between time periods is up there through sheer style and memorability. interestingly it's the same concept from the titanfall2 level posted above, and tf2 released in oct 2016, with d2 releasing in nov 2016. can just imagine arkane's reaction, having this awesome concept ready to unleash on the world only to see another game come out a month earlier using the same premise and steel your thunder

My favourites.

KOTOR the end level.

Detroit Become Human. When you knock on the mansion’s door. The ending level I enjoyed even more than that.

The microwave?

It's not even a level. You literally cinematic stumble/crawl through a hallway, occasionally mashing a button to keep the cutscene playing. 😂

Then you emerge to a rockem sockem robots boss fight that again, has nothing to do with level design lol.

@SolidGame_basic:

Yeah, not a fan. Think that sequence would have been better served as an edited down cutscene.

I get that some players probably felt more "involved", but nope, not me. Just annoyed lol.

Cutscenes are one thing, especially when skippable. But these pseudo cutscenes that are technically "interactive" just come off as a drag the first time, and a pain in the ass on subsequent plays.

Either way, for all the great level design that the MGS series has, just seems like an odd pick. More like a very basic set piece.

@ConanTheStoner: I remember being really rustrated by that segment. I kept pressing the button like crazy. I think I was already annoyed at that point because of the amount of cutscenes lol.
