One of my favorites is the stair sequence in the original Metal Gear Solid. Why is it special? Playing this game in 1998, you just had endured the torture sequence and are now trying to escape. All of a sudden you find yourself trying to climb through flights of stairs while trying to fend off what seems like hundreds of enemies lol..and then when you finally reach the top, you have to fight odd the Hind D on top of a roof.. which then leads to yet another epic moment, escaping the facility by climbing down the side of the building with a rope.. And that my friends is one of the most epic moments in gaming.

How about you, SW? What are the most epic moments in gaming you've experienced?

Was playing DCS World and flying my A-10C in a mission. Lined up an absolutely perfect bomb run with some CBU-97 cluster bombs that took out every tank in this armor column. Was super rewarding and epic.

Did a couple gun runs on some trucks and light armor after that and returned to base. It's nice when missions go according to plan.

Not my video, but kind of an example.

Most epic moment in gaming ever was the very first time I played 3D. I remember seeing the TV commercials for Mario 64 in 1996 and it showed a 3D world that prior to seeing it, you couldn't even comprehend was possible. And playing it for the first time did not disappoint. Nothing will ever be as epic in gaming again, at least not for a very long time as the first ever jump to a third dimension having grown up on 2D.

Alot of great memories from World of Warcraft back in the day.. A guild on the Alliance side had some ceremony in game for someone who died IRL, and for some stupid reason, they did it on neutral ground and posted it on the forums. This guild talked alot of shit on battlegrounds, so we waited until they all got together for this ceremony and slaughtered every last one of them. They where backtracking, trying to re-equip their gear, and screaming in rage as we went full Viking on them. It was beautifully brutal and hilarious.

Most of Half-Life 2's unrelenting action sequences (except the waterboat)

The keystone battles in Hellblade VR were so intense - from Fenrir to battling big mobs at once. Head on a swivel!

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat. Start of a clan match. Both teams are rolling out of our bases. I'm driving a tank. Rolling at full speed when I line my sights straight down the map above their base and fire a shot. About 3 seconds later 5 kills tally at the top of the screen. I just shot down their chopper not even 10 seconds into the match. My team goes crazy over the mic and we steamroll the other team.

They are mostly Arma/Dayz related back in the original Dayz mod era.

one that stands out is in a Arma 2 mod called Wasteland where you try and set up a base and defend it against attackers while going out and completing objectives and scavenging for weapons/supplies.

Me and a bunch of friends were playing and discovered another even bigger group had set up a massive base on one of the old castle ruins on the map. It became our mission to invade and take over the base as our own or at least steal all their shit.

Our first couple attempts were not successful - they were defending it well and had a spawn beacon so they kept returning.

Eventually, a few of us managed to infiltrate the base, and destroy the spawn beacon. They had a ton of hard to obtain weapons and supplies so we decided to steal everything and take it back to our base. While we were loading it all into a truck, the other group rolled back in with a bunch of vehicles. They killed one of us, but me and the other guy managed to take them all out and escape with all their stuff.

If you haven't played Arma or this specific mod even its hard to convey how intense an experience this was but I don't think I've ever felt so excited while gaming before or since.

the other guy even made a video of the endeavor

Maybe the boss battles in Shadow of the Colossus, and the implementationof its dynamic soundtrack that changes along with the progression of the fights. And the narrative transitions are subtle, beautiful, but effectively minimalist as well.

In rome total war i managed to beat a large Egyptian army with a few catapults and a small contingent of infantry. they just kept sending up small numbers from their army and i managed to just chisel away at them with the catapults. I was on top of a hill which was always helpful. when the army finally retreated it was such a relief :D.

....of course in the next turn the army attacked me again and wiped me out so.... :(.

Another one was an unexpectedly great result in Hungary in F1 2017. Hungary is not a track i am strong on. I was also in a very poor Mclaren. but this race was wet. for whatever reason the car handling felt great on intermediate tyres. The AI was switching to full wets and i was advised to do the same but i was putting good times in on the intermediates so i stayed out. Eventually the track dried up but i essentially pitted one time less than everyone else so i managed to finish 8th which was brilliant! I wasn't expecting to score any points at all.

I've been gaming since the 2600 so I've seen so many epic moments that it's honestly hard to remember them anymore. :(

Playing arcade games on the 2600, even though they sucked compared to the actual arcade games for 7 year old me it was amazing! Pole Position and Pacman at home on my own tv, WHAT!!!

The first level and boss fight in God of War, I got a demo disc of the game in the mail (they use to do this for ps1 and early PS2 games and it was awesome, an epic moment in itself) and it blew me away, the character was awesome, the setting was amazing, the boss was huge and badass, it made me need that game.

Getting my brothers childhood SNES from him (he had it in his garage stashed away for 10 plus years) and playing Turtles in Time with my son, and beating the game with him. Same with X-Men the Arcade game (ps3) and Streets of Rage 2 (ps3).

I’ve experienced many epic moments in gaming over these many years. A couple of my early ones are:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Arcade Game - most everything in the game felt epic but mostly the boss fights and the Technodrome stage. When I first saw this game at my local arcade it blew my mind. It was the tv show come to life.

Contra III: The Alien Wars - most of this game was epic as well. Cool boss fights, the plane zooming in and bombing the stage in the first level, riding missiles while shooting out the back of the jet, etc. The game just felt like an epic thrill ride.

STALKER Anomaly.

Entered the Garbage when an emission siren began blaring. Booked it to the train yard and fought my way into a train car in the center. NPC bandits, also seeking refuge from the storm, began pouring in from both sides, as well as another faction, both of who were enemies as well as hostile to me. Already low on ammo and health, I managed to fight off encroaching enemies from both sides while the emission rocked the building, which made aiming nigh impossible. In addition to this, my weapon was in poor shape and kept jamming. I ended up surviving by the skin of my teeth, with only a few pistol clips left and a sliver of health. Best gaming experience I’ve ever had.

STALKER, by far, has given me many of these moments where various systems come together to make emergent situations that are highly immersive.

@SolidGame_basic: I got Halo 2 at launch. Took the day off of work to play it. When I got to that section where you have to board the scarab, I assume what most people do/did is follow it to the end of the trench, and board there. Me? I grabbed a rocket launcher off the bridge and jumped on it while moving. As soon as I did, the "Rock Anthem To Save The World" music came on, and I was like "Oh, yeah!".

It was a very cool and unexpected moment.

@eoten: Yeah, the jump to 3D was pretty epic. For me it was Quake, though playing Mario 64 the first time was quite memorable as well. At first I remember being kind of disappointed with how boxy and jagged everything looked, but those concerns went away once it hit me just how much more interesting level layouts could be. Whenever I reached the end of a level, I would go back and search every corner, jump in every puddle (early 3D swimming was so fun) looking for secrets and hidden passages. I got more enjoyment out of exploring than shooting in that game.

Then a few years later, Soul Reaver came around and did the same thing but with one continuous, sprawling, interconnected world. Blew my little mind all over again.

1.) Del Lago boss fight in Resident Evil 4.

2.) The bank heist in GTA IV

3.) The sequence after the final boss in Mario Odyssey (want to avoid spoilers for whoever hasn't played it... It's not *that* old)

4.) The opening sequence of Uncharted 2

5.) Delivering Cortana in Halo Reach

The first time I ever chainsawed a locust in Gears of War. I was so giddy.
