What are your all time favorite RPGs?

Been playing Baldur’s Gate 3 and it’s fantastic! There hasn’t been an RPG like this in a long time. I think by the time it’s over, it will be one of my all time favorite RPGs. Which got me thinking 🤔 What are some of your all time favorite RPGs, SW? Below are what come to mind for me.

• Elder Scrolls Skyrim
  • When I first played this game back in 2011, it blew my mind! Hadn’t played Elder Scrolsl games up until then. The sense of discovery and the freedom to explore as you choose still resonates with me to this day. And also, becoming the Dragonborn!
• Elden Ring
  • It was either this or Bloodborne. Bloodborne still nails the atmosphere for me, but Elden Ring is probably the best Souls game. The gameplay is top notch and there is a ridiculous amount of content!
• Persona 4 Golden
  • It was either this or Persona 5. Persona 5 has the style, the better battle system, better dungeons. But Persona 4 Golden has heart! Really enjoyed the characters and the camaraderie they had. It didn‘t feel the same in 5.
• Octopath Traveler 2
  • Loved this game. It doesn’t waste its time with boring RPG filler. The battle system is fun, clever, and strategic. I always felt challenged in boss fights. And the boss fights were designed to force you to think. Aside from that, the world/design building, characters, and writing were great.
• Final Fantasy 7 Remake
  • Wouldn’t be a favorite RPG list without a Final Fantasy game. The original Final Fantasy 7 introduced me to the series and blew my mind for its time. But most importantly, this game has heart! And the Remake takes everything we love and gives us an enticing modern entry.

Phantasy Star on first impression was probably the most impressive.

The one think went back to the most is probably YS 1/2.

Fav use to be KOTOR2 but in reality barely go back to it. Gameplay wise it sucks, basically the dialogue holding it up.

I probably won't touch BG3 for a while because ever since getting into Darktide and a ton of the WH40K lore videos on YouTube I've been on a kick wanting to play more of the RPG heavy WH40K games. Darktide itself is a live service ARPG and probably the best WH40K video game ever made. I also really liked Fatshark's Vermintide games, though there was a desire to see this level of quality be used to adapt a game in the WH40K universe. Well, they finally did, and it is good.

As far as JRPGs go, easily the Persona series, which I've played Persona 3 and 4 on PS2, and started Persona 5 on my PS4 but never finished, but then finished Persona 5 Royal on my Series X when that came out. I'm not big on other JRPGs, few hold up compared to these and in previous gens JRPGs were very budget. These stood out in their production values. Plus many of the SMT games and subseries share a lot of similar features, so there's just a certain comfort I have with these games. Can't pick just one, especially with Persona 3 Reload nearly here, so, we'll stick a pin in it.

Curious about designation of XCOM as an RPG, it has RPG elements, and as someone with not a lot of exposure to turn based tactic games like this outside of Fallout 2. I've been meaning to either play through the XCOM Enemy Within or finish Gears Tactics. But, I'll hold off for now, stoked to hear WH40K: Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters will be arriving on consoles next month, which when I first heard of it was coined as a XCOM WH40K game. Whether that takes the crown for my favorite turn based tactical strategy RPG remains to be seen, and if not, then XCOM for now.

Blood Bowl 2 - maybe my primary reason for wanting to try this was the Mutant League Football vibes I got from it, and having never played that back in the day but wanted to. And even though this and that are nothing alike, I loved what was here. The year I played it, it was my most played game that year. Addictive fun. But, another game in the WH universe, a sport game, I gotta say I love the turn based mechanics and they even have dice rolls it's a perfect blend of video game with a tabletop twist.

Depends on what we think an RPG is.

We talking Neverwinter Nights or Dark Souls? Or both? Zelda?

@Litchie: it's become really loose over the years as more and more games have adapted hybrid designs, that applies with a lot of genres.

Maybe 15 years ago someone would make a stinky stink over someone calling something like Dead Space a survival horror game because it gives people too much ammo and it's too refined has to be super janky and require people to get good with the knife while using fixed camera angles and tank controls... thankfully those people either grew up or are in prison, so it's safe.

There are so many, an i am sure i'll miss some. Demon's souls, Dark Souls 1, Bloodborne, Elden Ring, BG3, Fallout 3 (flawed, but still immersive, and i love the Fallout world), Fallout New Vegas, Goldsun 1&2, Dragon's Dogma (sequel guaranteed to be on the list as well), Mass Effect 1 & 2, Dragon Age Origins, Divinity 1 and 2.

• The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
• Tales of Symphonia
• Fable 2
• Fire Emblem: Awakening

Dragon's Dogma and Divinity Original Sin 1 and 2 comes to mind as great RPGs.

Really good game made by the folks from Owlcat, makers of the great Pathfinder video game adaptations.

It's basically the answer to the question "I wonder what would happen if they made BG3 but with WH40K?"

Xenogears, FF8, Persona 4/5, Dark Souls, Baldur's Gate 2, Secret of Evermore, Divinity OS 1/2, LoH Trails in the Sky, Alundra, bunch of Sega stuff, million others.

That's the question. Me personally I don't consider anything Fromsoftware make an RPG, I see them as hack n slash games. But others consider Mass Effect to be an RPG, so it's been watered down over the years these threads are basically pointless.

@mrbojangles25: yup, but I have neglected it and need to get back into it before I forget it's there. I'm thinking of restarting cause I couldn't help but take advantage of an infinite XP glitch now I feel I robbed myself of an honest playthrough so I'm thinking of restarting.

I love though that they've made the game more accessible to people like me, if in the text there's something that needs further explanation as far as lore goes, they got that. And if I need to know more about how the stat systems work for skills and such they explain all that. I got a lot of basic lore already covered from the WH40K YouTubers I've started following.

Love the story. Though I usually don't play so many games that feel like I'm reading a novel, I love what's there. I'm tempted if I start over if I should just being either Dogmatic or Heretical. The dialog choices are so amusing to look at. I gravitate toward Iconoclast just to feel like a human being but damn could be fun to play whole game like - you meet someone, you can choose to say hello like a normal person, or tell your goon to smack that fool upside the head and tell them they should be honored to stand before the illustrious rogue trader. I feel like it could be more fun if I revel in one of the extremes.

One thing I'm curious too is that weapon shard, I tossed it fearing I'd be corrupted by the warp if I keep collecting them, but I am possibly thinking too I might want to see if I can overcome such a corruption if I get my willpower high enough. I'll surprise myself and collect them this next run to see what happens.

Played the crap out of dragon warrior 1,2 and 3 on nes... But it wasn't till final fantasy 2(IV) that it all came together for me... That game still begs me to replay it. One of my all time favorites. I think it's the music. Lol... The characters... So good.

KOTOR is probably my favorite game of all time. Games don't hit like the independent BioWare games anymore.... Mass Effect 1... So much love.
