For me, I have to go with the third option. I don't have any interest in the series, but then again, I'm not too huge on Western RPGs in general.

But this game does seem to be impressive from the looks of it, even though it doesn't seem like something I'd enjoy. Take Fallout 3 how it is, and not what you wanted it to be. Fallout 3 really isn't Fallout 3. It' a different game all together, but it still has the signature Fallout stuff in the game. Just think of it that way. Forget the name and look at the gameplay.

A lot of people hated Oblivion, despite it getting ridiculously high scores. Hell, even the user scores are AAA, I believe. I never played Oblivion, but I heard Morrowind was good. Shouldn't that show that Bethesda is capable of making good games? Or have they dumbed them down for "console gamers?"

Is the hate for Fallout 3 solely because it isn't following in the footsteps of the previous Fallout games? Why does this game get so much hate when there are even less impressive games coming out, like Killzone 2?

Fallout 3 isn't the game you wanted it to be or the game you thought it was going to be, but I don't think it should take away the fact that there are many impressive things about the game, like over 200 endings. I don't know. Maybe I don't know enough. I watched a few things about it, and just question what it is that's so bad about it.

What say you?

It's gonna be a commercial succes, and mediocre reviewers praising it like a god after playing for 3 hours.

Consolites will eat it, "OMG IT PLAYS LIEK OBLIVION AND I LOV3D TAHT GMAE ", and won't care that the game has bad dialogue, mediocre attempts at living up to the Fallout name, basically a shooter.

PC fans will eat it up, too. I seem to recall that over a million people bought the PC version of Oblivion. You could say that it was because the previous installment in the series, Morrowind was so good, but...

The user score for Oblivion on XBox 360 is 9.5.

The user score for Oblivion on PlayStation 3 is 9.1.

The user score for Oblivion on PC is 9.3.

Apparently, a lot of PC gamers loved Oblivion.

I'll be asking if it's "a great game", not "a great Fallout game" and base my decision to get it from there.

I completed Fallout 1 & 2 and I hope Bethesda grows from working with the Fallout licence. But to be honest, I think it won't be as good.

Did you respond badly when the fake Zelda trailer showed off Final Fantasy art direction?

How would you feel if Nintendo decided to try and make Zelda "mature" or something that betrayed fans?

I loved the first games, though this has nothing to do with Fallout 1 + 2.

I will reserve my judgements till I actually play this. Parts of it look cool, but the picking which area to shoot was getting old even when watching the videos... I can't imagine that holding up the entire 40 hours or so.

I voted the "Fallout fanboys need to STFU calling Fallout 3 crap" option. Yeah, Bethesda may be doing things differently, and yeah, it may be a crappy "Fallout" game. But that doesnt make it a crap game, especially for those of us who havent played the first two.

Didn't see it...

But I was ok with Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance being a hack n' slash when the PC ones were tactical RPGs. I have no problem with sequels changing up the gameplay.

Yup, this game won't be anything like Fallout 1 or 2.

You have to understand that cashing in on a franchise makes more money. I mean, that's why Hudson Soft uses Mario and the gang for Mario Party. How much do you think it'd sell if Mario and the gang, all the signature Mario stuff, and the like was replaced by some new characters that no one had ever heard of? I probably would've never bought or even bothered playing 1-8 and DS. Yes, I own every single Mario Party except for Advance.

So yeah, they'll make more money this way. This should be pretty obvious, but you have to see it from Bethesda's eyes... "Which way will we make the most money?"

Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance wasn't Baldurs Gate 3. And if Baldurs Gate 3 was like Dark Alliance I think I would die a little inside.

Honestly I was considering getting this by reading previews, then I saw the game footage at E3 and it turned me off big time. 2-3 enemies here, 3-4 there, just not that exciting. Not to say it will be like that everywhere, but it just looked utterly boring roaming around then have random helicopter units attack cause they "spot" you.

Well I'll cross out the "Fallout 3" on your game's box, and write "Fallout: Fight Or Die" or some other crappy subtitle and you can feel all better and enjoy a good game :)

Also, this goes beyond Fallout, but I hate this trend of "choose how you want to play." More and more there are games that try so hard to blend genres to the point that where you pick which genre you want it to play like. But even when a developer manages to make it work and is praised for it... I can't help but wonder, couldn't they have picked ONE genre and made it exceptional?

If it's a stealth game, make the stealth so deep that no game comes close. If it's a shooter, pace the action as such. If it's an RPG, don't try to shoehorn stuff that distracts you from advancing and customizing your character(s).

At least they're still making Sonic in 2D, as they should.

Fallout was a deep roleplaying game with choices. Bethesda are turning it into a lame shooter.

I bet you can't do this in Fallout 3

Go way you can't blame Bethesda for that. From GS news article:

"Although Bethesda's first Fallout game will be called Fallout 3, it is unlikely it will be the same game--code-named "Van Buren"--that was being developed by Interplay's internal Black Isle Studios. Black Isle was all but shut down last fall as part of Interplay's cost-cutting measures, which saw both work on the game stop and the departure of virtually all of its developers."

Black Isle was essentially gone, they were just selling off the assets.

You've got to understand that Black Isle was my favorite developer. How do I explain this? I suppose it would be like Miyamoto dying to a Nintendo fan.

Planescape: Torment is my second favorite game ever made*. Fallout 1 & 2 where also pretty high up there.

Shouldn't that show that Bethesda is capable of making good games? Or have they dumbed them down for "console gamers?"DeathScape666

Most of the hate directed at the game is because it was so simplified. Morrowind struck a nice balance between accessibility and a decent roleplaying experience with an immersive world. Both the PC and Xbox versions were identical, so it isn't like console gamers are too stupid to figure out how to play the game, Bethesda just decided to cater to a wider audience by focusing more on action and less on RPG elements and creating a much smaller, less interesting world.(Atleast in my opinion) Bethesda has some talented people working for them, no one is denying that. However, the idea of taking the streamlined features of Oblivion and applying them to the Fallout series doesn't really sit well fans of the series.

Nonetheless, I'm interested to see how the game turns out. I'm sure it'll garner tons of praise, win awards and be enjoyable. I put alot of hours into Oblivion but also found the game to be pretty shallow. Hopefully Bethesda will have learned from its mistake of oversimplifying gameplay. If they do this, I'd certainly be more interested in it.

I love Black Isle too. Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Fallout, Planescape. How can anyone not love them. But the sad fact is they are DEAD, and they ain't coming back. We were never going to get a "true" Fallout sequel. So I suggest being happy we get another Fallout game at all.

What Bethesda are making isn't Fallout. Vats is not tactical. As for roleplaying and depth...

Don't get me wrong. I'll buy Fallout 3. I just hate Bethesda for not doing the series justice.

It's not all bad though. CD Projeckt Red have proven themselves to be a good developer of deep roleplaying games. Just so long as there is one developer in the industry who creates them, I'm happy.

Surely what you liked about Black Isle was the amount of depth they built into their RPG's. It remains unparalleled to this day.

Bethesda's last game was the biggest dumbing down the genre has ever recieved.
