Off the top my head:

  • Metal Gear Solid
    • This was the first game that I can remember that started the cinematic gaming approach.
    • What makes it special to me is the story, characters, great gameplay, and the pacing!
  • Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time / Tears of the Kingdom:
    • I’m torn between the two! Ocarina of Time still has the better story tho.
    • I also liked Ocarina of Time’s pacing/dungeons, but Tears has amazing open world and creative gameplay.
  • Bayonetta 1/ 2:
    • When I think of the best action games, I think of Kamiya, and especially Bayonetta.
    • These games are fun, stylish, and they make you feel like a beat ’em up badass!
  • Silent Hill 2:
    • This was on my list before the remake, but the Remake solidifies it even more.
    • Very few games can take you into the psyche of a character while having the gameplay to match.
  • Resident Evil Remake
    • I know we’re so used to RE Remakes by now, but the first one is still the best.
    • Closed doors, creepy house, you never quite know what you’re about to encounter when you open that door. Still one of the best survival horror games and a pioneer in that genre for sure.

What about you, SW? What are your top games of all time?

1. Donkey Kong Country 2

2. Max Payne

3. Half Life

When it comes to replayability, this is it. There is nothing better.

But my all time favourite game list would probably be bigger and include more recent titels.

Enjoy too many games to narrow it down across a few, so it's not going to happen here for every game I rank as the top dogs.

If I ever call a game "top tier" or "among the best of its genre". It just means I value it as one of my tops, and I have many. Metal Gear Solid, Chrono Trigger & Resident Evil Remake are among them though. Honestly find those who rinse and repeat the same old "top fives" are broken records, just don't venture outside comfort-zones, living in the past, and that's dull.

To give a few I doubt anyone here would pick- Armored Core: For Answer, DUSK, Pac-Man Championship Edition DX, Katamari Damashii, Mr. Driller: Drill Land, Tetris, Dragon's Crown, Sifu, The Evil Within 2, Tearaway, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Monster Hunter 4G, & Signalis.. all peak, and just a few games I would call peak.

The most "mechanically perfect" game is TETRIS. Nothing has ever beat TETRIS on pure mechanics and it has almost a Chess like simplicity.

Half-Life 2 is still my personal all-time favourite.

I just bought Chrono cross and am going to play it for the first time. Is it dated or will it feel timeless like Trigger?

@TheEroica: More dated then Chrono Trigger. The visuals are pretty rough, especially the background visuals like the map. The game was pretty divisive as well. The combat system is kind of funky and people didn’t like the large cast of characters because it kind of spread things a little thin character/story wise. Personally I love the game but it’s not a game that I would just wholeheartedly recommend to anyone.

@Archangel3371: I usually play a jrpg every year so this was the one I picked. I'm still into Atari games so I'll survive on dated.

Lumines has beaten Tetris because it has a banging soundtrack and changing themes.

I couldn't just name a few, but after reading everyone else picks I can safely say that not one of them I would put on my list.

This coming from the guy who has a Kojima pillow that creates this thread around 3 times a year to tell us AGAIN that you like MGS, when most gamers know it's an average series at BEST.

And has remakes on their list of best games ever🤦‍♂️

I'm just a typical gamer who doesn't like saying "this is the best game of all time" or anything like that. I do have a bad habit of replaying old or newest games I find enjoyable, nostalgic, or just simply passing the time. But these are the top of my head and not in this order but rather I see them replay values:

  1. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time N64
  2. 007: Goldeneye N64
  3. Banjo/Kazooie & Tooie
  4. Halo Master Chief Collection
  5. Resident Evil: Code Veronica
  6. Elder Scrolls: Skyrim
  7. Pokemon Gold/Silver
  8. Crysis
  9. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
  10. Star Wars: KOTOR 2: Sith Lords
  11. Luigi's Mansion
  12. Sonic Mania
  13. Resident Evil: Village
  14. Mass Effect: Andromeda
  15. Control
  16. Black Myth: Wukong
  17. Super Smash Bros. Melee
  18. God of War 2018
  19. Last of Us 2
  20. Ghost of Tsushima
  21. Megaman X5
  22. Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
  23. Cyberpunk 2077

That's a lot of games, yeah I know. But like I said, I always come back to replay'em from time to time. I don't like saying of all time, 23 games on the top of my head are the ones I enjoy the most.

  • Chrono Cross
  • Super Mario World
  • Super Mario Kart
  • Twisted Metal 4
  • Grand Theft Auto Vice City & San Andreas
  • Warcraft III & Frozen Throne
  • Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2
  • Metal Gear Solid IV
  • Grand Theft Auto IV
  • God of War (PS2)
  • League of Legends

I'm sure I'm missing some but I just went off the games that had the most impact on me when I came across them as a kid or even later in life. Same with some of these as multiplayer only titles; some of the best times playing with my buds online late nights and ranking up
