Aside from party/cross chat (psn) what makes Live "better" than PSN, or for that matter Steam? And why can both of those free services do almost everything (everything + more in Steams case) while Xbox Live charges?

What is the REAL reason why people pay for Xbox Live, and what was the REAL reason why they raised the price?

People pay for Xbox live because its the only way to play the games they bought online. That's the reason people pay for it at the end of the day. And since its very well known you have to pay to play that is realistically going to be the most common reason for people paying. Its a simple concept really.

Cross game chat - I got a PS3 recently and whilst I still have my 360, it's annoying that I can't chat to my friend on PSN.

I could do that sure, but which is more convenient and doesn't result in a massive phone bill just because I fancy an easy chat with a friend whilst we're playing some games. Surely you must agree that cross game chat is an advantage, no?

Aside from cross game chat? Nothing, It isn't about the features, people only pay for Live Gold because they have to, it's the only way to play their games online.

nothing. We've been through this a million times... You just want to see the lemmings in damage control mode again?

Nobody wants to pay for online. But They just have to.

You can also use other services like Skype or Vent to chat while playing PC games outside of Steam or its service.

What is the real reason people pay for XBLG?

Because they have deluded themselves into thinking that paying to unlock content they already bought is a good thing. And that somehow that money is benefiting their experience online in some way (despite all that MS offers for online is peer-to-peer which is entirely dependent on ISP).

foxhound_fox

I think its a little easier than that fox :P

I think its that no money in MS's pocket equal no online for the games they bought.

He could just not buy games on the 360. There are a lot of options but the main one is he is right, MS has created value in chaging for online. He see a value in online, he is now paying for it. He is correct, its just that he is more interested in paying then pursuin other options which is a little unfotunate because it encourages paying money for features everyone is giving you for free.

Hey man, you don't get it man, the entire EXPERIENCE of Xbox Live is fantastic! That experience itself is worth $50. Oh woops, $60. It's so worth it that I forgot they increased the price  Everything else is a freebee that MS is kind enough to give us.

Does anyone actually KNOW why they raised the price? I have heard about inflation but that doesn't make sense as it costs nothing to really run Live (it's all p2p). I think it may have something to do with kinect and bringing in a new casual market who are unaware of the prior price.

Been a whole, what, 3-4 days since this was last bought up. All we need now is a "trophies vs. achievements" thread, followed by a "PC Gaming is dying" thread to complete the SW redundancy trifecta!

I don't own a console, but I prefer Xbox live to PS3's online system. It just seems better...which is probably because you have to pay for it.

I heard they raised the price because Activision wanted to charge people to play CoD online, but Microsoft didn't want that to happen..so they raised the price of Live and a % goes to Activision. No joke either..

But Steam does that too but for free, plus it does alot of other things that Live can't for free too.

I love steam, but it hardly does it the same way the 360 does especially considering you cant party chat on steam You are limited to IMs and inferior voice chat.

Well Micro$oft pretty much knows it console is primarily bought for Call of Duty. Activision wanted a subscription model for CoD. M$ is against subscription based games, it was the reason they decided not to let FF14 on the console, but the hypocritical thing is they allow other subscriptions like Netflix or EPSN on the console. But Activision must have threatened to cancel a 360 version of BO so they decided to hike the price to give some of the XBL share to Activision. And outright LIE against their customers about the price hike. Now THAT'S shady business right there.

I don't disagree, however the fact that it is a third party source makes STEAM inferior int hat regard

This thread is about STEAM, not PC ONLINE.

Doesn't matter, its still free compared to xbox live

Like I said, I don't disagree, but is this thread about the PC? No, it is about STEAM and my comment was in direct response to a comment about how steam does exactly what Xbox Live can do and guess what, it isn't true. I am no 360 fanboy, I am a PC gamer first and foremost, have been since the DOS days, but the logic in system wars is ridiculous.

the reason steam is free is because of the money they make selling games. which outside of one of there sales is one of the most expensive places you can buy PC games (in the UK at least. for instance now CoD:BO has been part of there amazing sales for the last few days at £39.99!!! £12 more expensive than amazon. and as for PSN its best feature according to PS3 fans is that its free.

1. Steam has integrated web browser. 2. This is SYSTEM WARS, the PC is a system also. There is no reason to let PC's full array of functions and ability's out of the picture.

than maybe you should change the topic title to What can Live do that PSN and PC can't for free? Because the way it is now clearly doesn't feed into your I hate Xbox Live mentality.

Does anyone actually KNOW why they raised the price? I have heard about inflation but that doesn't make sense as it costs nothing to really run Live (it's all p2p). I think it may have something to do with kinect and bringing in a new casual market who are unaware of the prior price.

It costs nothing to run xbl but sony just said they're losing money on psn?:?
