"Jaffe leant further credence to the rumors that his new studio is at work on a TM game during today's episode of 4 Guys 1UP. We've seen evidence that the new game will have vehicles in it, but Jaffe came right out and admitted as much on the show.
During the podcast, 1UP editorial director Sam Kennedy asked, "With your new game, are you thinking about accessibility...?", to which Jaffe responded, "Here's the weekly struggle on my current game. I don't think I'm giving anything away, but our new game does have vehicles in it. We would love to have those vehicles control using modern control configurations. Everybody picks up a controller these days and [they] say, 'Oh, gas and brake are on the shoulder buttons.' They're no longer on the face buttons. But if suddenly we were to say those vehicles have other functionalities besides driving. Well, suddenly the game don't play very well when you put the gas [on the shoulder buttons]. But I know if we were to put this hypothetical game with vehicles that did other things besides drive in a new players hands, they're going to want to control it like they're controlling Burnout."
Traditionally in Twisted Metal games, gas/accelerate is assigned to the Square button, with weapon selection and firing assigned to the four shoulder buttons on a PlayStation controller. With that in mind, it's hard not to think that Jaffe is talking about developing the control scheme for a new Twisted Metal game.
Later on in the podcast, Jaffe asked Insomniac's James Stevenson about where Insomniac was going thematically with their new game. "I don't mean specifically," he clarified. "In the same way I ain't telling what I'm doing with cars... or vehicles, sorry." Presumably the slipup with 'cars' instead of 'vehicles' suggests that there are ground-based vehicles in the game that don't fall under the umbrella of 'cars,' but who knows -- perhaps his next game will have flying cars. It wouldn't be the first time a vehicular combat game featured a flying vehicle.
