As a huge Zelda fan, this is one of the few Zelda games I never played because I never owned a Wii but I always wanted to. It's getting a HD remaster for the Switch and now I'll finally get the chance to play it. For those who have played it how is it!

Shit game even if you like bad games like 3D zelda games like Ocarina, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess.

Breath of the Wild was by far and away the best thing to happen to that IP.

I skipped it, it looked bad, played a store demo and it sucked, played it at a friend's and it sucked. I thought the Wii motion plus or whatever it was called look stupid gimmicky.

Some good stuff buried in a largely mediocre game. Also the most intrusively hand holding Zelda game without a doubt.

It's like the antithesis to BotW. Constantly reminding you of stuff you learned early game, but all the way through. At some points will straight up tell you shit rather than letting you solve it yourself. Hope they address that.

Should be better without the hard reliance on motion+, but even getting away from the issues there, the multidirectional sword combat is just way shallow. Not that other 3d Zeldas were deep on the combat, but at least some positioning consideration and the offense/defense flow was there.

Game also has you repeat a lot of mundane content with minimal (if any) change.

On the upside, I do remember there being some really inventive dungeon sections. Nice art and music too.

There's a whole lot of little changes they could make to add up to a much better experience, but wouldn't expect anything great.

I think I remember the game getting criticized for having insufferable dialog where you couldn't skip or speed up and it was slow to progress and that by itself ruined the game.

Worst 3D Zelda. Like all the others are 9's and 10's for me and Skyward Sword is a 6 or 7.

Its one of the most tedious zelda game due to the motion controls and very linear. Some people that I talks to in the past also thinks its a bit handholdy and the game can be very slow at times due to padding. On good side the story is very well done and this dude named gh****** is a really good antagonist.

A 7/10 from me.

-----------------------

Also thumbs up to Gamespot review for having the balls to not pander to the nostalgia/nintendo fan crowd and criticized it fairly. Lots of hate was thrown at them at the time but many came around and agree with gamespot. Definitely a biased 93% metacritics rating.

Skyward Sword ruined me on Nintendo from a couple months after its release until Switch came out and I bought it for the family. The forced motion controls were so horrible that even with them adding in a semblance of regular controls now, I still won't bother with it.

Had they gone with a port of Twilight Princess and Wind Waker, I would have bought them without blinking.

Heard it was one of the weaker Zelda games. Heard it's padded like an isolation cell in the mental ward, and Fi was like Navi except somehow even more insufferable.

Sounded bad. I was quite content to pretend it didn't exist, and considering how few people still talk about it (as opposed to occasionally bringing up Majora's Mask, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess and NEVER shutting the f*** up about Ocarina of Time), I think I was right to do so.

I might buy it eventually, but I'd rather Wind Waker or Twilight Princess.

And apparently those are still coming this year to Switch going by rumours from a VGC journalist... and he has a good track record apparently.

The game is excellent for the controls alone, but the game has great dungeons/puzzles.

The game does hold your hand especially in the early game but doesn't hold your hand where it matters, dungeons/puzzles. The exploration is kept to a minimum (so don't anticipate BOTW or even Windwaker or Twilight Princess.) With that said, any environmental exploration you are doing is all revolving around puzzles. It's never as simple as go from A to B.

You need to be able to get passed the first couple of hours to really get into a great game.

There's clearly a lot of posters who haven't played it for any meaningful span of time, if at all, acting like they know what they're talking about. It's a great game, and very unique amongst the Zelda games.

It had some of the highest highs and lowest lows in the series.

I genuinely enjoyed the motion-controlled combat (some of the swordfights are top-notch). I hated some of the environmental scavenging stuff. The dungeons were generally pretty strong though, and the villains were fun.

So...eh, maybe it was better than Twilight Princess?

I'm a huge Zelda fan and I consider this game the worst 3D Zelda by far. With that said, to me even the worst 3D Zelda is a great game.

It has one of the best story and characters in the franchise, music is great too. Gameplay and setting is where this game falls a bit short as a Zelda game. The sword controls were actually not bad but not great either, just passable. The linearity and handholding of this game were suffocating, forget all the freedom you've had in previous Zelda games and as ConanTheStoner said it is basically the opposite of BoTW in that regard.

To this day it is the only Zelda game I haven't replayed or felt like replaying but I'm willing to give it another go on Switch (I don't own the game or a Wii anymore).

Initial reviews were too glowing, and then fans swung the pendulum too far the other way with all the hate they give it. I say it's a solid 8.5. Low for a Zelda game, but still fun. There isn't as much world to explore, and it has a bit more padding than even Twilight Princess, but if you like dungeons and puzzles, SS has a bigger emphasis on that aspect than any other game in the series.

I would say it's biggest flaw is, despite some attempts to shake up the formula, it still feels too much like OoT.

I remember suffering through the first 5 or 6 hours, which were awful. And then really liking it, apart from the flying the dragon bits.

Then towards the end it wanted me to back track across the map looking for shards or something to pad the game length, I lost interest then and never went back.

First off, what I hold against the original SS would be the motion controsl, blurriness and a fairly boring and empty flying world type thing. Flying around on the bird didn't yield enough results.

The dungeons were enjoyable and even Skyloft was not a bad hub as it provided for some interesting experiences depending on the time of day. The game gets a bad rep for repetition but I found the majority of worlds to be solid. I expect (though I'd like being wrong) this to be a simple release unlike the Wii with the controller or the more basic game with soundtrack.

Enk. I made it pretty far into this game and I found it to be much too puzzle oriented. Also running around all over the place to get ingredients for potions - I felt this game was too much like a potion crafting simulator more so than any other Zelda game.

I much prefer Wind Waker to this. I never picked up a Wii U so the sooner they bring Wind Waker to the Switch the happier I'll be.

Being a disguised GameCube was probably the best thing about the Wii. Releasing the GameCube again with waggle controls was a bold move. Pretty annoying that it paid off, I wanted more from Nintendo.

I gave it an earnest shot, played about 4-5 hours or so, enough to beat the first dungeon. It fucking sucks. Even if the controls were 1 to 1 which they are not so cut that lie out, the game is miserable. Incredibly slow and padded as hell even compared to Twilight Princess, ridiculously large amount of forced tutorial and progress halting, boring enemy design where virtually everything centers around the games stupid sword gimmick, an ugly and empty overworld that's way too big and bird controls are a nightmare, massive reliance on imperfect motion capture for virtually everything. Of that 5 hours probably a half hour was spent recentering the garbage wii+, and yes, I tried everything to make it work. None of that gets into the stuff I've only heard about, like the insane amount of content recycling the game has.

Skyward Sword is mediocre at best, it's really hand holdy, and doesn't give the player a lot of room to explore and experiment. Tacked on motion controls are really bad too.

To me BOTW was so good because it did everything opposite of Skyward sword. It was a complete 180.

Skyward sword is a 5-6 Nintendo game from a franchise that is better than that, I really feel that people saying they like it or that it's actually one of the better Zelda games are lying to themselves.

It's ok for Franchises you like to miss the mark sometimes.....as long as they learn from it the next time around (Which Nintendo did with BOTW)

it never holds my attention. i get as far as clearing the first dungeon then another shiny thing draws me away :S.

I actually liked the controls. i also liked the art style (though i dont think the wii was powerful enough to properly pull it off). it was the content itself that never really grabbed my attention. it seems to be all zelda dungeons and a small town.

i think there was a lot of disappointment too with this one as people were looking for a shake up of the formula and SS was just not it. it was very much a by the numbers zelda and that was already wearing pretty thin with TP.

i still have it. may try again at some stage. i dont see myself getting the remaster though.

I remember not liking it. The motion controls in SS were bad. Aside from the controls I remember thinking it was a so-so Zelda game. What are the chances they put the work in to improve the controls or provide options. The motions tech it kind of a fundamental part of the combat design.

Def wouldn't be my first choice of a Zelda game to bring to Switch. C'mon where is Wind Waker HD??? You know, Nintendo, the one everyone actually wants to play.

Pretty much my same thoughts, however i didn't enjoy the villain that much.

I would also give the game a nod on the dungeon designs, they had some really clever ideas that made them very enjoyable and unique. If only the boss battles were good.

Anyway ... @silentchief if you want to play this game ... go for it. The things it did well, are really good, just bear in mind, the padding may be frustrating.

Excellent dungeons. Excellent boss battles. The combat made for some memorable moments. I think the game is very underrated. I hope it has something of a cult following within the Zelda series. It's not as good as the best games in the franchise, but that's okay. The "bottom-tier" ones such as this game still have their strengths and charm.

I think Skyward Sword was a missed opportunity. As you know the Links in various games are reincarnations of the "hero". There have been many of them, like the Hero of Time from Ocarina of Time, who was the predecessor to the Hero of Twilight, from Twilight princess. But Skyward Sword was the very first one. It was the origin story of the franchise. The founding of Hyrule, the forging of the Master Sword, and the curse that has history repeating itself as it does. And Nintendo fucking blew it by half-assing the gameplay, the boss design, and building it around some stupid motion control that nobody wanted to use.

So my opinion of Skyward Sword? A lot of lost potential, and because of that, a massive disappointment.
