This is kind of a response to an older article talking about Nintendo merging their hardware divisions. My question is what do you see nintendo doing console-wise after the wii u and the 3ds? And this is assuming they don't go 3rd party

To be honest, i really have no idea. They are kind of in no man's land, where their product doesn't really cater to anybody but fans of nintendo (and even then there's probably some buyer's remorse until nintendo's 1st pary ips start being released). I could see a hybrid console, one where you can plug it in to your tv and play games on it, and also can take with you as a semi portable device (similar to an actual tablet, but with its focus on gaming). I don't think they will try to bring back motion controls full force, but they'll probably keep it around like the wii u did.

I'm asking because 1) i kind of have a soft-spot for nintendo, probably can tell from my posting history (though honestly i was more a pc/xbox guy this past gen), and 2) i find it kind of interesting to talk about, since their once very highly regarded brand now is a bit polarizing, especially on these boards. And i always wondered if they should try to work themselves back into the picture, or should try to find a new niche somewhere.

I don't know, what are your guy's thoughts? (If you want to talk crap about nintendo, go nuts though bonus points if you make it clever or funny (even in a lame kind of way)).

As of right now, I really don't care what Nintendo do next. After seeing what they have done the previous two generation, it's obvious that me and Nintendo don't share the same idea of what a next gen console should be.

Let's worry about what they're doing this gen before we worry about the next.

Hoping for a Valve/Nintendo/Indi box for gaming. I think there will be only room for one console in the future, due to PC's becoming increasingly cost effective and easy to use and multifunctional, and having other solutions that can replace the multiplat consoles (media boxes, tablets etc.)

Full on Virtual Reality. You actually get to be Miyamoto performing oral sex on Mario and Link.

Screw that. What's the point in that? What if they just choose not to support your platform? Because they didn't like the audience or didn't like that you didn't put their store on your platform, or they didn't like that your UI is blue and white, or Microsoft paid for them to make your version unstable. There's no point in doing that. They go where the money is, or based on something irrational.

If the wiiu is a complete failure, meaning worse than GameCube, I can see them releasing a new console before Christmas 2015, maybe even 2014 if it turns out to be a massive trainwreck. Otherwise november 2017, wiiu2.

It would be nice to play some of the games that it misses?

For the last three generations and the future (not including the GBA and DS) I would have preferred for them to not release a console and to just make games. If their games were just released on another console, the PC, or any combination we really wouldn't lose anything, save some money and space by not having to buy a Nintendo console and still be able to play the games. No reason to want to needlessly waste money.

to be 100% honest i'd prefer this too. I think my biggest worry is that the games will drop in quality and/or some of the ips i like will end up disappearing (similar to what happened with sega). At the same time i honestly don't see nintendo quitting the hardware business after this gen. I think they will acknowledge the wii u was a mistake (if it flops, which is very possible seeing as its off to a pretty poor start) i could possibly see a lot of changes up top, but i think i do see them giving in one last try.

You can say that for all platforms.

I hope they stick to handhelds. They would be unstoppable if they would create a handheld with modern graphics and other attributes like dual analog sticks. I rarely play my 3DS when it uses flip-phone graphics from 2005 and gimmicky 3D.

I think either new leadership is in order, or the company will be sold Lucasfilm style.
