I would have to say for me the lack of High Quality JRPGs for me..mainly no HD console version of Shin Megami Tensei 3, however I do have ni no kuni (bought today) but I just expected more titlesÂ

All CoD games and BF3. Horrible games which were praised by millions. PS3 saved this past gen with it's fantastic games. Xbox 360 fanboys are ruining gaming.I would have to say for me the lack of High Quality JRPGs for me..mainly no HD console version of Shin Megami Tensei 3, however I do have ni no kuni (bought today) but I just expected more titlesÂ

The annual releases of sequels. Any great franchise that came out this past gen competely lost any novelty that it brought to the table originally when the publishers and developers continously release a game of said franchise on a annual basis. I mean come on COD every freaking year, Assassins Creed every freaking year, Halo ever freaking year, Forza Every freaking year, I mean enough is enough, make a new game or franchise and take a break in between both. I mean enough is enough. I'm so tired of seeing a new forza, halo, gears, assassins, COD, etc every year. Its almost like they are just becoming extremely lazy and don't want to put an creative thinking cap on.
Poor DLC designed not to make the gaming experience better, but instead just to charge you more
Casual gaming influencing the direction of the majority of hardcore games
Motion gaming
Stupid exclusive content (Buy our game on PS3 and get an extra hour of content!) and some DLC. DLC was such a great idea that's been absolutely ruined by the greed of most publishers. The idea of being able to make small expansions for games without the need for them to be full retail titles like expansions mostly were before the dawn of DLC, was, and still is, a great thing. Except that's not what most developers/publishers have done with the idea, most of them have used it as a way to earn extra money by milking their paying customers. bobbetybobWhat they could have done is instead of making freaking annual releases of games, make an expansion pack? I mean not that tough. But then again people continously buy them so you can't blame them I guess.
lol, so much about DLC, I never bought into any of that mess. Â Dark Souls would be the only exception. Â
But yea I do understand when most of the publishers doing this DLC spamming are CUTTING content from the original game instead of actually adding real additional content over what they already have.
Where to start...
Just off the top my head, but the list goes on and on.

For example, something like Assassins Creed 2. If Brotherhood and Revelations had been short expansion packs I would have been more likely to buy them, but they weren't and I really didn't want to play two more 20 hour versions of Assassins Creed 2 with some slightly new gadgets.
The (un)reliability of the consoles.
Cut scenes and pointless interruptions every 2-3 minutes of gameplay when it should be every 20-30 minutes.
Stupid stuff like timed exclusive content. GTA4 DLC got hyped for years and it was something like 3 short months until the PS3 port. WHAT THE HELL IS THE POINT
The overabundance of cinematic cover based shooters with health regen, excessive check points, emphasis on set pieces, 2 (4 if lucky) weapon rules, michael bay, banal weapons, lack of enemy variety, short uninspired campaigns and a shallow multiplayer experience with half baked RPG elements. Which is why I more or less moved away from the AAA industry (except for Nintendo and a few others).
I just wasn't blown away by anything. It felt more like an extension of last gen with a new coat of paint.

There were many greedy decisions and trends that started last gen, but something that has really bugged me is the way the increase in tech was used for many mainstream games.
Instead of using improved tech to create new gameplay opportunities, developers had a tendency to poor all that power into superficial things like graphics and cinematic flourish that ultimately forced gameplay into the background.
I just felt that tech was often times misplaced last gen. Afterall it is gameplay that seperates video games from other media.
The overall shift towards making money at all costs; motion controls of all kinds; popularity rewarding mediocrity.
No Kingdom Hearts 3. God of War 3 check, Metal Gear solid 4 Check, Twisted Metal PS3 Check, But only 1 series that I wanted to come for this generation still hasn't come. Kingdom Hearts 3. Way back in 2005 before the Playstation 3 was released These are the game series that I hoped would come out. Now the Generation is just about over and only 1 is still missing. Kingdom Hearts 3.
Xbox 360 Halo series was well done and there was lots of episodes this generation. So maybe on Xbox I would have like to see another installment of Crimson Skies 2 since I liked the original Xbox Crimson skies High road to Revenge. So I would have liked a Xbox 360 sequel.
In general I hope the motion gaming fad dies off soon. Nintendo Wii sucked, PSmove sucked and Kinect sucked. I am not happy that Xbox 720 requires Kinect 2. In order to function. Sorry but Kinect/Kinect 2 are just not suited for videogames. Kinect 2 sucked and it has not even been released. I would have hope that kinect would have died out by now.
That is stopping me from getting Xbox 720 at launch. Not feeling very good about Kinect V2 being required for Xbox 720. Kinect is a success for MS with the casual gaming market but other than Dance Central and the Zumba fitness for the "soccer moms" Kinect is useless for videogames. I'd like it if MS have Kinect 2 as optional.
Motion gaming is a fad that has to die.
A few things over the course of the generation,
-GTA 4
-Rise of Free to Play
-Crytek going F2P
-DLC, Pre-Order Bonus and missing content in games
-Rare
-No Alan Wake 2
-The Wii and Wii U
-DMC 4 (But I love the new one!)
-Consoles focusing on too much content that isn't software and gaming (ie netflix, original tv etc)Â
-Motion Controls and the obsession to have it every wheres.Â
Poor business practices and those who for whatever reason defend them.
Specifically, Blue Dragon/Fable 2/Tales of Graces F.
the dominance of western rpgs. fallout and the elder scrolls series just don't do it for me. Maybe next gen they will but currently they don't.
The PS3 outside of a few choice games, yet those games didn't have staying power with me regardless.
The Wii, at times, with its motion controls. I still enjoyed many games, but others I feel were held back by imprecise controls.
Quake 4, and UT3 failing to be as good as their predecessors which in turn led to there being not as many high-quality arena shooters this generation.
Â
Those are my top 3 I'd say.
Lack of quality JRPGs definitely. Also how "safe" Microsoft has been the last 3-4 years, and their conversion to a primarily non-gaming entertainment and casual focus. They had an insane drop-off of new core AAAE IPs. The evolution of DLC from being smaller expansion quality content to nothing more than a nickle and dime model (with the few exceptions of course). EA acquiring Bioware, probably the biggest casualty this gen.
