This is something that's been on my mind recently, mostly because the next generation of game consoles is presumably just around the corner. Or at least, some news of them certainly is.

We can pretty much say that the main reason why Nintendo released and marketed the Wii as they did (using motion controls, and not a true technological leap forward, as the console's selling point) is because they had lost so much ground in the market with their previous two consoles. (Of course, I'm not ignoring handhelds, but they've dominated that sector for a long time...)

What I'm curious about is this: With their feet planted firmly at the top of the hill once again, what will Nintendo release next time around? Personally, if I had to guess I'd say they'll go with what works, and keep the motion controls (if a bit more refined) and add in whatever they can without jacking the price up too much. (HD resolutions, up to date hardware)

I don't think they'll have the pure horsepower to match whatever Sony/MS offer up next, but that's just because that doesn't seem very "Nintendo" these days...

I hope that at the very least their new console is at the same level of hardware as its competition and has a good online system.

that might be another gamecube. Sony will copy their motion sensing but can destroy them in computer horsepower. Nintendo will have to do something weird again like better motion sensing (?) or VR or 3D or something

Currently Sony and Microsoft are willing to launch consoles at a premium and still take a loss. Whereas Nintendo prefers to sell at a profit at a consumer friendly price. Unless companies change their strategy next gen there is no way Nintendo could compete on a hardware level.

they will have to match power. the wii was a huge curve ball and it won them the world series of video game sales. no way the other 2 will let this happen next gen. i just hope we dont get a 360 2 or a ps3and half and a wii 2 next gen. im used to buying a new system that makes my last gens console fell like it was made 12 years ago.

I want Nintendo to refine what the Wii was about, as far as motion controls and that retro vibe, call it the Super Wii, and make the graphics up to par with what will be the standard next generation. Also, launch with another Zelda, only exclusive this time. Launching the Wii with Twilight Princess was just too cool, I want moar. Screw a launch Mario, I want Zelda Super Wii! Or even better.... Launch with Super Wii exclusive Final Fantasy 15. :o That'll show whose really the home of Final Fantasy!

Probably hardware that is as powerful as what Sony and Microsoft offer with the PS3 and 360.

Can't say this for certain, but I'm thinking we'll probably get some more Mario, Metroid, and Zelda. Just a hunch.

Ah yeah that would probably happen. I guess they have to innovate somehow or keep the affordable price point again.

They should make it HD since games sucked without HD since the beginning of video games. Kidding kidding. But better graphics and online.

It'll be on par with the competition (at the very least) with the motion tracking refined further.

new innovation that will be taken and claimed as their own by competitors half way through the generation
