Poll What do you play more, retro or modern games? (42 votes)

I tend to play more modern games (anything from the PS3/XB360 gen onward) 67%
I tend to play more retro games (anything before PS3/XB360 gen) 21%
I don't play video games, and have no idea why I'm here. 12%

For the purpose of this poll, just to keep it simple, I'm defining retro as anything pre-PS3/XB360, and modern everything starting with PS3/XB360 and on up to today.

For myself, I'm all over the place, but tend to jump back and forth in time every other game. I just finished Kena: Bridge of Spirits, and am now playing Baldur's Gate 2 EE. In between I'm always playing some old arcade action/NES/SNES/Genesis etc. Next up I'll be jumping into RE4R.

What about you hooligans?

Short answer: It depends on my mood.

If I'm bored and feel like playing something quick, I'll boot up Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Mega Man X or something akin. If I want to play something grander, then I'll play a recent release or a comfort food like P5. Then there's those retro styled modern games like SoR4 that I can play on modern hardware with a friend if I feel like doing that.

Definitely modern games for me. While there’s certainly a lot of retro games, from the NES and up, that I’d have no problem playing again there’s just too many great games that keep coming out that I just don’t have the time.

Definitely modern. Retro games are good if you want a challenge. Old games like Mega Man or Ninja Gaiden will kick your ass regularly.

Modern for me. I didn't buy a 7950X3D + 4090 Strix, a PS5, a Switch, and a SteamDeck to play retro games.

Or, not primarily. I do play them from time to time. But very rare.

I have a wide range of gaming interests so there is always a new game to play. Would rather spend my time on new experiences than on games I’ve already played, but there are a few exceptions.

Modern games, and probably more modern indie games made to look retro than actual retro games.

More modern games but I do play a lot of retro. Just recently got MiSTer and the thing is incredible and I pair it with a classic consumer trinitron tv but also a recently found PC VGA CRT monitor which has the crispiest CRT image I've ever seen. Old graphics on that are incredible. Honestly Donkey Kong Country 2 on that looks as good as a modern 4K hdr game on my OLED in a way.

Also with my MiSTer I use original controllers via SNAC. It's freaking awesome.

Xbox 360 and older... MUCH older. For me the 8th and 9th gens are kind of uninteresting.

I have a Series X and Switch but I play lots of retro stuff. Older RE stuff, original Halos, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark. All the classic NES SNES N64 and now GBA on Switch.

A lot of the franchises I still play today were born in the retro age- Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Metroid, Mario Kart, Smash, Halo, Resident Evil, etc. The only "modern" franchise I regard as highly as the ones I listed is Souls.

Modern, but I always dip in retro. Good games are good games, no matter the era.

I bought 13 games last weekend on a road trip, 10 of them were retro, so yeah i'm going that way.

I will say I tried to start SBK 22 last night and the game wouldn't even start because I had it installed on my external HD, so I had to clear room on the internal one just to play it, gaming these days get more and more of a hassle to just play a game.

This year it's been more retro.

Just depends, what I'm in the mood for, what's coming out.

Overall, roughly even split.

I pick modern games but recently I replayed Xenosaga episode 1. Its still a really cool game. Next its Shadow Hearts then if I able to finish it before FF16 drop I guess I am playing Xenosaga episode 2. Just need to find a copy.

Very into Hunt: Showdown at the moment, and just got RE4R.

I play plenty of retro games too. Gonna play trough Phantom Hourglass again. Probably thanks to cup.

Mostly modern, but RetroArch allows me to indulge in games from yester-year. Anything from the Atari 2600 up to the Dreamcast gets a play. Really love the mid 80's to early 90's era the most. Classics such as Out Run (the modified 'Cannonball' variant is fantastic), Super Hang-on, Paperboy, Golden Axe, Double Dragon and Final Fight get good session every now and again.

Played shitload of Hades just a couple of months ago. Its just too bad that indie games of this quality are so rare.

@hardwenzen: Ah, cool. Think I remember you mentioning playing it before, but wasn't sure. Hopefully the sequel will be sweet.

The dev in charge is one of the better around, so its guaranteed to be good, but we're still over a year from the release of the game, which sucks.

I'd say about 50/50. Been revisiting some of my Gamecube collection recently. Find myself enjoying XGRA and Bloody Roar: Primal Fury more than I remembered. They were kinda second tier in their day, but now they wrap me in warm nostalgia for a bygone era.

Lately I've been focused on x360 generation games I've missed. I skip around though. The last truly modern game I've played is Elden Ring. I'm not drawn to competitive mp games so there's no real urgency to stay on the front edge of anything. As I've stated many times, we've accepted the practice of unfinished release games so I find letting games marinade for a few months yeilds a better experience for a cheaper price...

There are plenty of great experiences I've missed along the way so plenty of games to play at all times.

I do a bit of both. Retro games when I have to teach about the importance of older games and modern games to keep up to date on what is trending.

After playing some games after the Xbox360/PS3/Wii era, I now prefer to play modern games. The pixelated, blocky 3D graphics of the past no longer appeal to me compared to modern graphics. Not only that, but games with no or minimal voice-acting look dated to me.
