Australia has been sony land for some time. the ps3 launches and barely any people show up to buy the console. the media and store security outnumbered the actual customers in some cases, etc.

did anyone see this coming?

what do sony fans make of this?

Of course it was obviously going to happen. $1000! hellO! And for what. Oh yeah it has blu-ray....Thats really not needed at this point in time. And games? None worth getting a PS3 at launch for. And the overall way Sony has treated Aussie gamers. Making us wait MONTHS after the US...and they expected Australia to welcome the PS3 with open arms. Well that worked out well didnt it. We didnt get any free TVs like the UK. Oh thats right, Australia doesnt matter!

^^ Agreed. Apart from the bit where you said we don't need blu-ray at this time. I'm hoping we never have to use it. DRM!

The fact it launched on a thursday night and not friday probably put quite a few people off form lining up and also the massive amount which where available for pre-order just didn't compell anyone to really wait in line when they could go pick it up the following day.

I think I lot of people saw it coming.  If the PS3 has a hard time selling at the price it's set at in North America, raising the price and reducing the functionality isn't going to get people storming out to buy a PS3.  The whole "Get a job" thing doesn't exactly work well on people since a lot of people work (they just don't want to spend that much money on a gaming console).

Don't be surprised if Europe responds in similar fashion despite the reports of record breaking pre-orders.

I think at least 2/3 of this board saw it coming.  At least it seemed like it from all the threads and bad news recently.

And Ps3 is 800 not 1000 (U.S. dollars) in Australia.

Same, and besides a Video games console is for playing Video games. Im sick of cows boasting about bluray while the main focus of the console (the games!) is being swept under the carpet.

To be expected, it's really far too expensive to sell well.

I don't think it's the price alone but it is a huge factor. The PS2 cost $750 (if memory serves correctly) when it launched here but people wanted DVD and could justify buying the PS2 as a DVD player that also has the benefit of being able to play games. The PS3 is even more expensive and blue ray is a lot less attractive than DVD was back when the PS2 launched. Then there is the strong competition it faces from Nintendo and MS. The only competition the PS2 had was the Dreamcast and while I thought it was an absolute bargin at $250 when the PS2 launched, most people disagreed it seems.

PS3 launched in the US the same way. It came out on November 17 at Midnight. So you had to be in line Thursday night.

Considering by all accounts theres been good supply for the PAL region releases and many people may just pick them up tomorrow, couple that with the fact theres no launch numbers right now..well I don't really have a position until all the details are out.

It is still surreal to see how badly the ps3 is doing...

i think whats killing it is the bad press, which it cant seem to get rid off. it was doing ok for al while after gdc but all this bad news brought it back down.

What is killing it is the price.  Sony got greedy and forced Blu-Ray on their fanbase.  Even if the PS3 is a bargin for the technology packed in it, the high price for a console has done a good job of alienating customers.

Also back when when they released PS2 with DVD playback, it was succeeding VHS VHS people! it was an awful format.. Even with Blu-ray out now, i don't see it becoming uber popular like DVD was when it took over VHS. Its just not much of an advancement in technology. At least the DVD looked a lot more attractive compared with VHS, which definitely would have convinced alot of people. Bluray and DVD look exactly the same.

Not surprised at all, I expect the Europe launch to be just as bad just like the NA and Japan.

There is a difference, thing is, the difference is insignifigant enough that only extreamly nitpicky people care.  Granted I know a lot of people who are like this...  Not quite sure if the average person though is that picky.

Good for them if their willing to fork out $$$ for a bluray player that plays movies a little better then current dvd players.

It's freaking hilarious. I would love to see the-very-best's (he's australian) damage control because he really does think it's going to win still.

HD dvd and/or Blu-ray is worth getting if you have the money and an HDTV. If not, then it isnt. I dont think now is the time to push a new video format. VHS was around for almost 15 years before it was replaced. Why are we replacing DVD so early?

Well if sales are really bad the way it is looking so far then MS will not even have to pay much to Square for FF cause they will be more then ready to go on 360 also to make up sales.

Why not? The X360 didn't come here until march 06 which is also months after the US.

It's so expensive here. Like AU$1000 has to be around US$700 so we're getting ripped off.

I want a PS3 but I'm not gonna spend that much money.

Not surprising at all. With that pricetag, I'm surprised anyone bought one.
