My Top Eleven Most Important Video Games

--- In no particular order ---

Tetris --- considered by many people to still be the greatest puzzle game ever.  Defined the puzzle genre.  This game proved puzzle games can be addictive and fun

Super Mario Bros. --- paved the way for creative 2d sidescrolling action with hidden secrets to boot...catapulted Mario to success.  First console videogame with a tune many people find catchy.

Legend of Zelda --- 1st console game that let you save your adventure.  Non-linear gameplay.  One world with no levels.

Wolfenstein 3D --- one of the 1st FPS.  Paved way for other FPS games. One of the 1st "gory" games on the market.

Super Mario 64 --- 1st game to nail the 3D adventure traveling correctly...1st game to use true analog control

Mortal Kombat --- The game that was the major cause of the formation of the ESRB.  There was such a stir about the violence and gore in this game, that Nintendo changed the blood to green and took out the fatalities on SNES. When released in arcades, this game caused Senator Lieberman (sp?) to panic and caused much debate about game violence

Pong --- need I say more?

ET --- who says "important" games have to be "good" games?  This game stunk, but the important thing is that the arrogance of Atari for believing that just because the movie ET was a phenominal hit, that they could release a game of terrible quality and kids would buy it no matter what.  Atari released more ET cartridges than the number of Atari 2600s in existence.  The important part is that the game flopped hard and was the major cause of the videogame market crash in 1983

EverQuest --- the success of this game paved the way for developers to bring forth the MMO revolution.

Body Harvest --- paved the way for the "free-roam"  3D game genre later mastered by RockStar with the GTA series.  Because of Body Harvest, we now see games like GTA, Crackdown, Just Cause, Saints Row.  Body Harvest was a new and different genre than any other at the time of release.

Populous --- Considered by many to be the 1st true "God game".  This paved the way for SimCity, The Sims, etc.

I'd suggest StarFox, since that was the game that sorta introduced the whole 3D thing.

I'd also say WiiSports since it's pretty much the game that's paving the way for motion sensing games.

Perhaps also Duck Hunt for shooters

You forgot Dragon Quest.

Without Dragon Quest, no Final Fantasy, and no Final Fantasy, gaming in Japan wouldn't be this big.

You forgot Ultima. Dragon Quest was an Ultima clone.

Without Ultima, we wouldn't have DQ and FF, thus the JRPG industry may not have been as large.
Hell, Ultima pretty much began the WRPG genre, too, so it must be important.

Oh, and if that's not enough, Wolfenstein 3D was based on a tech demo of the spinoff game Ultima Underworld - which was released before Wolf 3D and featured a much more complex game world (you could jump, swim, interact with object in the environment, etc). So you could argue that Ultima definitely influenced the poplarity of the FPS genre.

Ultima Underworld also kicked off the company that would become Looking Glass Studios, so without it we wouldn't have System Shock, Bioshock, Thief or Deus Ex.

Oh, and The Elder Scrolls (and other FPRPGs) were rip-offs of UU, so we wouldn't have those series either.

Oh, and their other spin-off game - Ultima Online - was the first MMORPG to have graphics, so they began the MMORPG industry, too.

In short, ULTIMA definitely deserves a very high place on the list.

You thought Mortal Kombat was more important than Street Fighter 2? Street Fighter 2 was also on the Senate floor too.

Just because Body Harvest "paved the way" (it didn't really, people overrate this game) doesn't mean you shouldn't list GTAIII which really mastered and created its own genre.

Gaming would be nothing right about now without GTAIII.

Thief came out a month later, and had far superior stealth mechanics.

To quote Greg Kasavin:
"One of the many reasons why 1998 was such a groundbreaking year for gaming is Thief: The Dark Project, a game that helped invent what's now commonly referred to as the stealth action genre. Though two other noteworthy stealth action games were released that same year--Metal Gear Solid and Tenchu: Stealth Assassins--Thief's brand of stealth was the most convincing, and it went on to become the most influential."

Err, excuse me? Are we a bit over zealous here? Gaming would certainly be something without GTA.

All GTA did was broaden the market appeal last generation and perfect it's own sub genre within the larger sandbox genre, since it hardly invented it. It did not make gaming from nothing into something.

I'm not one to denounce GTA, I think their all great games (even San Andreas, which some people said was too repetitive, but I loved it) but these comments are just too far out.

Except less crowded with sandbox games, which'd be terrible.
