What does Sony need to do for Playstation 5 to be successful?

Sony nailed the launch of the Playstation 4. Do you think they can do it again with the next generation console they release? Does the Playstation 5 have to have the best specs? Backwards compatibility? $400 price point? Should it go the way of the Switch? Let me know your thoughts, SW. I don't think Sony has to overreach on this one. Just give the gamers backwards compatibility with PS4 games and a 4K player and decent specs and you're good to go.

Do what they are doing right now basically:

-Have a strong, talented and capable first party.

-Provide a good and easy developing environment for third party devs.

-Champion diversification in their gaming offerings.

Some other things they can do for bonus points:

-Work on backwards compatibility or at least access to games from former generations, the overall Playstation library is just too rich to miss this opportunity

-Provide a consistent performance output

-Try to get closer to PC, maybe look for partnerships with PC companies like Steam or GOG

Just calling the console PlayStation 5 is enough to bring in all the money from the cows, whether the console is shit or not.

Nintendo doing their own thing and MS shooting themselves in the foot should do the trick for Sony. Sony can just do a regular Playstation with better hardware and it'll be big. They have it very easy.

Gives us games with actual replay value.

Same as they did this gen: powerful and clever designed hardware, and lots of games (indies, third parties and explusives). Plus full bc with PS4.

Both PS4/Xbox One were release back in 2013, if PS5 (and possibly next Xbox console) were to be release in 2019, it'll mark 6 years since PS4 release and 6 years is mainly the time for next-gen consoles to start anyways.

I also didn't know PS2 introduced a structured online system with party chat, invite system, adding friends and achievements. Downloadable apps and games, changing the entire value of a home console.

I don't know why people praise the PS4 launch so much. Microsoft did all the work for Sony by shooting themselves in the foot, and Nintendo was off in its own little world at the time.

I'm sorry but the two most important aspects for me are the strong first party with consistent quality exclusive offerings and the diversifying gaming library. After all gaming is mainly about games. Microsoft is failing miserably in both of those fronts. You can say all you want that it is opinion but that Sony has a stronger first party with higher-scoring games and more diversity in exclusives both from first party and third party is overwhelmingly supported by the gaming community at large so basically you're trying to deny a piece of reality. Yes, Microsoft has been doing some good stuff that I would like to see more of on the Playstation brand but until Microsoft gets their shit together with games then their console is pretty irrelevant in comparison to other systems out there.

A game having a 5-6% or less attach rate isn't spectacular. Exclusives are not the driving force behind the sale of consoles, no matter what system wars believes. This is the vocal niche crowd in a hobby that's run by casuals which are the group theses companies chase regardless how you feel about it.

40+ games out of which like 35+ are going to be on PS4. I need something that differentiates the X1 from the PS4 not that matches it. The PS4 has both, many first party and third party exclusives over the X1 and also more diversity in these offerings. And the cumulative attach rate of all the exclusives games is much more significant in this case. Sony is not Microsoft that relies on 1 or 2 big name exclusives to sell huge but diversifies and releases more exclusive games and the cumulative attach rate of those is what gives the Plastation brand the strength. They are not just looking for the bro gamer crowd that like shooters and cars but also the crowd that like Yakuza, the crowd that likes the last guardian, the crowd that likes Horizon, the crowd that like Nioh, etc. All of them high quality and highly diversifying offerings and those are just a small example.

@pinkanimal: every single one of those games have low attach rates. Diversity means nothing to the casual gamer. I don't care to play weeaboo games, movie games. I play Online with my friends, I play Shooters, MS wins in that category every time. Better controller, better network, and my friends are there.

MS and Sony aren't dumb, they most def use the fanboys as free advertising. MS announced the Elite Controller for the high end gamer and not for casuals, same with X1X for the gamers that know what a TF is and means. Now you got the fanboys hyping and pushing this stuff and consumerism at it's finest will have casuals going "if they need that I must need that" and the "I don't want someone having something better than me". Average consumers of video games don't purchase the way most on gaming forums would. They are really quite ignorant.

As for 35+ of those games are coming to PS4, that's nice. X1X versions may look way better they might look slightly better or digital foundry will have to tell people why the X1X version looks better and the fanboys will still eat it up and proclaim "best versions of games on X1X" and some kid on YouTube will see it and tell his mom he needs that.

They should do a lot of what Microsoft is doing such as:

- backwards compatibility

- game pass

- game gifting

- have a 4K UHD blu-ray player

I would like to see this but take it a Step further the Pro version should cost $600 and literally be a Monstrous Beast of a Console.

Again, most of those games have not so big attach rates but the cumulative effect of a diversifying library THOSE create a big enough attach rate and, most importantly, you reach a bigger audience. Ironically Sony has the casual gamer crowd too so even with all those shooters Microsoft hasn't been able to attract them. Even many bro gamers now play on Playstation even though apparently Microsoft wants to attract that crowd mainly.

Casuals historically have ignored power differences like those of the PS4 Pro and X1X so why should they start caring now? That's ignoring all the real world and historical data we have. Casuals will see the price tag on the PS4 Pro and the X1X with a 4k written on the box and choose the PS4 Pro.

Put some focus on its multiplayer titles, beef up PSN with more features, not every game needs to be a blockbuster. Some simple titles along the lines of Socom/MAG, Warhawk, Motorstorm, Twisted Metal (just some fun co-op/multiplayer games).

Hands down right now Xbox One S is the best console on the market for value. UHD Blu Ray drive, EA Access, Game Pass, more Apps, plays all the multiplats(the games people actually purchase), and is cheaper. So where are the casuals mopping this thing up? Are they waiting for the magical $199 price point, going for more power, or being dumb and waiting for X1X?

Well Sony can do what they did before with the PS4 which is converted close to all the xbox 360 lemmings into cows , but this time it will be the xb1 lemmings they convert to become cows with the PS5.

Because games also count. At least much more than power. History also shows that. The PS3, being more expensive than the 360. Outsold the 360 and most people gave it to a strong first party library. Again a reason a diversified exclusive offering gives the brand strength.

This isn't true. It is missing one of the most important features in gaming with respect to the competition: games. Have you seen the lists for high scoring games on Metacritic for both, PS4 and X1? Say above 70? The PS4 is just kicking ass in quantity and quality and people notice that. You lemmings can keep trying to ignore that but the reality is that a diverse exclusive game offering matters much more than you guys pretend.

You can try and spin your narrative all you want, you don't fool anyone. 2016 and 2017 have been very good for PS4 before that Sony was living off the "we got the power and all games look better here" mantra. If PS4 had games that appealed to me I'd have it point blank. There are none, the abomination that is God Of The Last Of Us didn't help to persuade me, cause I was looking forward to seeing what what coming from the series. There no Twisted Metal, and I can play all the multiplat games I enjoy on Xbox.

It cost money to include BC and it's the reason why PS3 was so high at launch. There's a reason why Nintendo Switch doesn't have BC.

They should stick to what they've been doing this gen.

- Continue to have the best 1st and 3rd party support.

- Launch at $400 with reasonably powerful hardware for a console.

- Launch with PS4 BC out of the box. Should be easy since PS5 will also use x86 architecture.

If they stick to this plan they will win again handily. Sony is at their best when they stick to what works and the above plan has worked everytime they've used it. The only time they deviated from this plan they lost the gen.

@davillain-: Err no it wasnt. The BR drive and Cell processor is why the PS3 cost so much at launch. BC cost Sony about $30 a console the BR drive cost over $100 and cell processor cost Sony over $150 a console.
