Since Half Life 2 we've had: HL2 ep 1 + 2, L4D 1 + 2, Portal 1 + 2, and TF2. Not a whole lot of games especially considering they're all based off of the same engine : / Maybe they don't make as much money off of hats as we thought.

Not much apparently. How many years ago was the last Half Life game/episode?

Valve is probably my disappointment for a developer this generation other than maybe Lucasarts.

I hear Gabe owns a majority stake in Valve, so some of the money flows to him. Rest of it probably goes into retained earnings.

What kind of question is that? It's a company with a greater purpose of having profit. I know is shocking that a company pursues profit. Besides Valve has L4D, Half life series, Portal series, Counterstrike with a new one coming in 2012, Team fortress 2 that is constantly upgrading, Steam that also constantly upgrades

Having a lot of money provides resources for making games, yes, but having A LOOOOT of money removes an important incentive to make games. Why make games when your pants are leaking cash? There are certainly many other reasons, but in the end they may simply not be compelling enough.

I don´t know, release three or four AAA games so far this gen, even without a full new Half Life? I´d say they´re doing better than the majority of developers out there.

Not to mention steam and all the awesome deals it has and the support that theyb give to their games, very few devs do that,at least at that extent.

They were once my favorite developer but not even close anymore. They released Half Life, Half Life 2, and both episodes in 9 years....or a Half Life game/episode every 2.25 years.

In the last (nearly) five years they haven't release anything Half Life.

Portal 2 is neat and all but doesn't cut it for me. And the Left 4 Dead games are technically made by their subsidiary. And I have zero interest in DOTA....for a RTS game I prefer Civ or Starcraft. Plus, DOTA 2 isn't even out yet so not sure what that has to do with anything.

They are far too focused on Steam. Developing isn't their #1 priority anymore. They are a huge disappointment. And like I said they were once my favorite developer.

Well, they probably pay royalties and such to the publishers that put the games on the site, pay for maintenance on the office and the website, budget for their games, pay their employees, and put all the income and stuff in the bank or some place.

why would Valve pay royalties to the publishers or developers? They pay Valve to put their games on steam.

It has been four years since the last Half-Life Episode, if the game is not out next year that means it will have been in development for a total of five years. For comparison the time span between Half-Life and Half-Life 2 was six years. I think Valve failed on the whole "episodic content" thing, no?

Might as well ask that about a lot of companies that make a boat load of money, but who never seem to invest it more in gaming. Or invest it in making more risks.

Hell, look at Blizzard for instance.

Fans use the old--they put out few games, because their games get as close to perfection as possible. I just call it laziness, especially when they haven't tried anything on a new IP in ages. The same is applied to Valve(except the new IP). These companies have enough money to form development teams capable of challenging the quality and quantity of titles found in companies such as Nintendo. Yet, they don't do it at all. Nothing wrong with that, personally, after all, it's a business.

They invest in new gaming talent, invest in games, invest in infrastructure, invest external sales, taxes, regulations, reserves, lawyers, psychologists, economists, ASL interpreters and plenty more we probably don't know about.

More than one per year, and you're complaining???? I think they could have waited with Portal 2 and L4D2 until AFTER HL3. That way... 2009 = HL3 with brand new Crysis graphics engine then 2010 L4d2 on new engine, 2011 Portal 2 with new engine and then 2012 a new CS game with this amazing new engine and then 2013 Team Fortress 3..

I reiterate, Valve has just been rehashing the Source engine, not making completely new games. All those games you listed are practically just mods of HL2.

Well then, i suppose that every single unreal 3 engine game is just a mod of Gears of War since they all use various versions of the same engine, right?
