Idiotic Trophies and Achievements destroyed them.
Part of the reason I refuse to get Doom3 BFG edition. Already got it on original XBOX and to me, it's the "better version" of the consoles.
The exact same thing that happened to health packs. They're just gone, those in exchange for regenerating health. Cheat codes and secret levels were now substituted for paid DLC.

Technology happened. Developers have less time to spend putting in fun secrets because the actual game takes so much work. That's my assumption anyway.Cherokee_JackThat's probably the actual reason. However everyone prefers to think that developers just all suck now and deliberately leave them out to spite the playerbase or something.
Well... one thing for example in fighting games people we're not happy about it... having to play the game a certain amount to unlock a character or something really bothered some people. They just wanted the full game experience from the go w/o having to unlock anything. At least for fighting games.

Weapon Wheel and Health pack made FPS sooo much better. More challenging and better variation... you do the exact samething over and over with health regen and 2 weapons.

Opinion.
Also you're wrong. The health system has jack sh!t to do with repetition.
I'm sure halo 4 will have it's fair share of easter eggs. (assuming 343 will do so like bungie did)
As far as I knew I thought that games today still had some secrets or easter eggs here and there. As much as old games I would not know.

I prefer the middle ground found my Halo: Reach where your shields recharge but your health drops. Reliance on health packs can just lead to scrambles to find more health packs if you get your ass kicked or make a mistake. At least with recharging health you can recover and reassess the situation if something goes wrong. In other words, you deal with your screw up.
Easter eggs are found aplenty in games still.
Cheat Codes? Not really anymore. GTA aside, last time i saw cheat code they were sold in DLC by none others than Capcom! (it was for deadrising off the records)
heck, i think even Saints row 3 is guilty of the same thing.
people moaning bout cheat codes and having to pay for them? hahahah did any of you guys get a codies game last gen, they had a premium rate phoneline for cheat codes.I remember it very well for LMA back in the day.
Remember Gameshark? LoL i remember manually putting in very long codes on the gameshark for PS1 and Nintendo 64. man, those were the badass days of gaming.jessejay420
I used to love Gameshark lol Haha I used to always mess around with it for the Pokemon games. I remember being able to catch trainers Pokemon and stuff.
There are still plenty of easter eggs in games, including some very disturbing ones and very weird ones. Cheat codes on the other hand, I can't say the same thing for.
I don't know nor have any idea what you are talking about.
The games I play still have quite a bit of fun little hidden easter eggs and cool cheat codes to use.

Can you give me some examples of a few?

Sure, the Sims always have some kind of cheat codes in all games and the Sims 3 was no exception, Portal 2 has easter eggs pertaining to the game itself and other Valve games, over the weekend I played Pay Day the Heist and given that it was based off of L4D you can probably guess that there are some little nods in there as well (heck there is an entire scenario dedicated to the L4D story that even has a cameo appearance of Bill himself), Saints Row the Third has cheats as well (though they are built into the game), same as the Lego games.
I guess cheat codes are a little stagnent this generation but easter eggs? Psssh, no they're there, you just gotta go find them.
