Play Farcry or Crysis. I always see people posting things I have never seen in both games even tough I have played both 3 times.glez13but even in those games you know where to go, you just have a choice on how to get there. in the older ones you have to find a key find a secrete room that comtains a button then go back to the start to find a hidden door opened up then presss a hidden button behind the hidden door that reveals a key then find the door the key belongs to, well you get the idea
Getting lost doesn't mean its non-linear. It often means its poorly designed.Skittles_McGee
No it means you arent observant enough.
The FPS genre evolved. crazy-player
into fps like killzone2 where you take cover and shoot explosive barrels?

No, it means someone just doesn't stop making alt accounts, Mr. tfgyhtryrfgdsft...[QUOTE="crazy-player"]The FPS genre evolved. tfgyhtryrfgdsft

Im pretty sure KZ2 wasnt the 1st to do that

LOL, WUT?
Are you serious all that you described is linear. You have to find the key that is always in the same place, and which you have to get first because it opens the same door always that is required to to go trough to activate the button that will open the door that will lead you to the second key, that you will never be able to get before the other one mentioned. And so on.
All that about the hidden button, door key, is BS. I played those games and the secret stuff is just extra ammo or other extra stuff you don't need to advance in the game.
Ummm, developers got better at their job and started designing FPS's that didn't require you to see recycled corridors Ad nauseam. Oh, yes there are still some out there being made but they aren't the norm anymore. Respect DOOM and Duke Nukem for what they did and how good they were at the time but also realize that they have been surpassed over and over again.Ibacai
wrong fps evolved for worse.... now it's the game tells you what to do/go.
duke nukem 3d you had puzzles and crap, hidden area's to find.
duke nukem 3d is far above the pile of crap you call fps today.

yeah you have to find the key, if you dont know where it is or how to get it your lost. and it it was liniar all the doors will be opened and not have you backtrack. Also if you dont know what your doing you could be stuck for a long time[QUOTE="Ibacai"]Ummm, developers got better at their job and started designing FPS's that didn't require you to see recycled corridors Ad nauseam. I disagree on everything you just said. FPS have always told you what to do or where to go, it's just a matter of how that is done. Backtracking, keys, secret rooms, etc. They all amount to the same thing except they are less refined and rely more on someone walking the same areas and killing the same guys to find something that was missed. Nowadays it's more about moving forward then back. That would be the change. Oh, and HL2 has better puzzles and secret areas then Duke Nukem 3D. So how is the evolution with actual hardware? Looks good here.[QUOTE="tfgyhtryrfgdsft"][QUOTE="Ibacai"]Ummm, developers got better at their job and started designing FPS's that didn't require you to see recycled corridors Ad nauseam. duke nukem 3d you had to explore levels/kill enemys to find key cards to progress and sometimes puzzles, or combination locksor whatever.
that's what made fps fun exploring levels and finding new area's, secret areas.
the fps now, like call of duty it's like a oylmpic race start to finish lol no exploration, just follow little linear path/shoot game ends yay.

half life 2 level design sucks ass seriously, 3drealms is much better
LOL WUT?
Did he just quoted himself?
so whats your response on the old quote. if you dont know where the key is or how to get it you can be lost for a long time and you still have to find they key even if you know where to go you will still have to go out of the way to get it. i ve seen many people who get lost and frustrated in those games and say the challenge many times is not knowing where to go rather then the enimies killing youThey'll always be remembered for their contributions to the FPS genre, but now, they're only relevant in a Video Game Museum or mentioned in a Top 50 Greatest Games of All time somewhere in the internet.hiphops_savior
But System Shock 1, released in 1994 is still playable and enjoyable today, and it surprises you to no end, plus implications of its influence are still visible everywhere (Half-Life -> System Shock 2 -> Deus Ex -> BioShock -> Dead Space, etc.), and while narrative might be rather linear, the game itself (mainly exploration) is not.

For a certain fan, yes. Don't forget that the FPS fanbase in general, tend to have very short attention spans.
