What game deserves story of the year so far?

Let's face it. Breath of the Wild pretty much had no story lol. Great game, deserves a lot of accolades, but story is not one of them. Persona 5 is another great game, but at the same time the story is not one of its finest features. The one game that comes to my mind right now that does deserve credit for best story is Yakuza 0. And I'm not even done yet lol. But ever since the beginning I've been enthralled with the story, writing, and even voice acting of this game. I'm new to the series and did not expect something this good. So as of right now, this game still beats Persona and Zelda for sure in the story department. Hopefully it finishes out well. How about you, SW? What is your story of the year so far?

I'd personally say Persona 5.

Some reason, Persona 5's story really touched a nerve in me, made me angry. The story was fine, not angry at the game, but I identified with it too much, about the story and how it started out, involving the coach pushing his students, people being okay with that because it made them competitive in sports, but they were being emotionally and physically abusive and exploitative of the kids... reminded me a lot of about the bullshit that was going on at my work at the time. I don't want to go into length just how the game triggered a lot of anger in me as I played because of this, but I connected with the story there far more than the average player probably did. And like the other Persona games I played, the characters really drive the story in that game, this might not have had the strongest characters of any of the Persona games but even still, they still did a great job there. I still need to finish it though, and NG+ it, maybe I'll warm up to it a lot more.

Anyhow, year is not over, and the new Life Is Strange prequel comes out tomorrow =D

What Remains of Edith Finch was pretty cool.

Of the big games, I'd say Horizon or Tales of Berseria. The latter doesn't get enough credit; it was really a return to form.

Honestly haven't played any games in recent times which had a story that was mind blowing. Though I have to admit I haven't played that much games this year, most of them were shooters.

Yakuza 0. I loved everything about it so much.

Persona 5 easy

I'm going to go with one of Microsoft exclusives, but which one shall I pick.

Not much in the way of stories really... I guess Prey is the best one I played; it wasn't a great story, by any means, but it did have a cool ending.

You know what, I still have to play Observer. Layers of Fear was cool as hell, so if it's anywhere near that, then probably that.

No but seriously, I haven't played a single game where the story stood out as something worthwhile.

I'll take tight mechanics and gameplay over story any day. I feel like I've yet to see a game pull off a great story and great gameplay. Partially because I'm not really an RPG fan, and I don't worship the ground Naught Dog walks on.

Horizon Zero Dawn? Nier: Automata?

I'd say one of the PSVR games.

For me, Zelda was the better overall game but Uncharted Lost Legacy had the superior story.

I will say that Mass Effect Andromeda's story wasn't bad at all but fell short in comparison.

Horizon zero dawn for sure.

Tales of Berseria in the first hours of the game, storywise, were fantastic and among the best I have seen in video games. It sadly loses momentum though when the focus moves from the story to gameplay.

I have yet to finish Persona 5. In the beginning the main plot started to feel repetitive with the "evil adult leeches of teen(s)", but it looks like its getting better. So far the meain appeal is, like in 4, the characters and how they interact with each other.

Probably something like Edith Finch or Observer. Want to get around to trying em.

Out of the stuff I've touched, I mean I like Yakuza 0, Majima is the shit, but it's pretty fucking nonsense as far as a story is concerned. It's hype purely for how absurd it is, but I doubt as a narrative it has much to say.

Life is Strange Before the Storm..............the first episode is very good, better than I thought it would be. If this is the "rocky" start like the last game, its going to be another masterpiece.

Rachel's voice actress is excellent and the new Chloe VA holds up pretty well.

Persona 5 is a mess that crumbles in its message.

Halo Wars 2 or Prey

Well i guess I have to experience it to talk about it. I do have some major issues with some things during the main plot. It's just weird how the game transist from "Kamoshida is a pig for pressuring his students to do stuff they don't want" to "the heroes pressuring Ann to be a nude model for them to progress in the story". It's weird stuff like that that seems totally contradictionary.

I guess it depends on what we define by story. If it's the main plot only, P5 (what I played of it) is far away of being the best. If you include all the additional stuff as well, it might have a chance. Again, I'm not through it, no idea what hides behind the rest. I just got burned out after like 60 hours xD

The only Wow moment I had this year was Tales of Berserias beginning. If only the game were able to keep up the fantastic work they did pretty much until you break out of jail.

Yeah, that's what I have a problem with. the heroes act almost as bad as the villains they fight and show the same signs and problems the villains do.

And really Night In The Woods and definitely Life is Strange Before the Storm has it beat. You want a wow story moment, the ending of the first episode of LIS BTS is a wow. No more doubt that the new developer can handle the IP.

By not having much of a story, BotW's story is better than most games.

Can't really think of a story that stands out from a game I've played recently.

Yakuza 0 is the one for me. Tales of Berseria is after that

I'd have to say ether Hellblade or Persona 5. Also if you say Horizon, that games story is complete trash and within the first 20 min you already know the ending (at least the plot twist) if you know anything about genetics.

P5 or Horizon, most likely. But I've yet to play either of them, so I suppose I'll go with Overwatch lore.

Edith Finch has interesting tales, but they're rather fleeting (except for the brother's story, that one is exceptional).

Probably Nier:Automata, great game and good story, really hits a nerve depending on how dedicated you are at the game.

Both games should teach the Persona team how to handle taboo real life subject matter.

Prey is cool, but I would not call it a great story.

I havent played that many 2017 games so far so NieR: Automata wins by default

edit: Now that I think of it NieR Automata is the only 2017 game I've played thus far... weird how far I am behind this year.

Yeah I agree... I enjoyed the 1st episode more than I thought I would too.

From what I've played, it's easily Yakuza 0.

I think I was more moved by Majima's arc than anything in Persona 5 (and I mostly enjoyed Persona 5). It all comes together like a top-tier crime movie, and the superb presentation and mo-cap did a great job of enhancing the drama.

Personally did not like the story in Horizon at all, thought it was smug.

Mind you I've been reading too many real books lately and not had the time to play too many story intense games. A quick play on sonic mania is all I can muster.

Yakuza 0 is what entry in the series? I've been wanting to get into this game. Just not sure where to start. I just picked up Persona 5 and it's awesome so far! 4 hours in though...lol

Yakuza 0 is a prequel to everything else, so it's the best place to start.
