I stopped playing Marvel's Avengers once the missions started becoming some weird Destiny type lootfest. Other than that, the combat seemed kinda cool and the campaign had a Uncharted type feel to it in the beginning. It seemed like the start to a great game, but once it started the lootfest, I was out! Another game I stopped playing was Jedi Fallen Order. I wasn't digging the combat or the Dark Souls esque format. It felt very forced and repetitive. I got bored pretty quickly.

How about you, SW? What games did you quit / didn't finish and what was the reason?

...

Do you have, like, a week for me to go through them all?

But generally speaking, I just move from game to game very quickly unless something really grabs me. Sometimes I come back months or years later, sometimes I don't.

Too many to list and the most common reason is too many cutscenes or dialogue chains. Metro Exodus and RE 8 comes to mind. Now if the game advertises itself as being a gameplay light game then at least I have the heads up but when a game is supposed to be an action game, horror or highly interactive and I am being forced to be a bystander, my patience is being tried.

Shellshock: Nam '67. It felt like a sluggier SOCOM. Was funny at times with the gore and hanging out at base camp, spending your battle trophies on prostitutes. I still don't know if it did anything.

MGS V is the one that sticks out most for last gen. Graphics were great but once again the story was convoluted and I got bored playing it.

Blaster Master for the NES. Even though I tried when I used to play on the NES many years ago, it was a difficult game that I decided to give up.

Most final fantasy games... I do enjoy the graphics, story and music a lot but the gameplay feels more like a chore with no thought or skill involved, and more like a movie game than anything else.

Death Stranding.

Just didn’t click after the first set of missions, still trying to summon the resolve to go back. But I am a trophy whore and I struggle accepting the burden of a 100 hour game when there are other, comparably long titles with more gusto and intrigue I’ve left unplayed (P5R, Witcher 3, RDR2, for example).

There’s a bunch of games that I have left unfinished right now but it’s not because I wasn’t enjoying them. I just get the urge to play different games from time.

Dragon Quest Heroes. Put the game down after less than 1hr of playing it. The voice acting is cringe-worthy

AC Black Flag, MGS V, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Dark Souls, Yakuza 0. Some of them I quit because I no longer have any patience for open-world games that take dozens of hours to complete, others I just wasn't in the mood in the end or got distracted. I do plan to go back to Yakuza 0 and start fresh - I need that Japanese quirkiness in my life.

Its not reasonable to list them all but it typically comes down to me getting bored/no longer enjoying a game.

less frequently due to difficulty (eg. Sekiro) or technical issues (eg. Kingdom Come Deliverance)

American McGee's Alice. That Jabberwocky fight is an unusual combination of difficulty and bull**** mechanics. It's too bad, really. The game was enjoyable up to that point.

I also quit Dark Souls once it became apparent they ran out of money to finish it, but I'd intended to do so when I'd started playing it.

Recently?

Marvel's Avengers.

There were just so. many. interruptions!

Oh a statue, steal control from the player so you are forced to admire it. See that robot over there? Yes? Don't care, going to steal control from you so you have a "cinematic moment". Are you enjoying crawling through this derelict carrier? Yeah? Well you obviously aren't seeing everything, let us steal control from you so you can see all the rusty goodness!

God forbid you just let the player control the game for more than 10 minutes uninterrupted.

Pretty much. Still think it's a great game. For that 2/3 (or further) got moneys worth.

It's a problem Larian Studios have with Divinity I/II as well. Eventually you become OP it's just a case of "when will this end".

Red Dead Redemption 2, most boring open world game ever made, absolutely could not stand it. I'm embarrassed that I played it for as long as I did.

Divinity OS 1. Really intrigued for a while but got completely bored combusting various parts of the environment. DOS2 even worse, same BS everything dependent on environment but now enemies have shield forcing you to waste skill wearing them down. Ugh. Larian literally have this ONE single solitary gameplay mechanic they pummel you with to death over and over basically every single battle is what do I use to ignite that thing lying over there. BEYOND boring. Dreadful characters and story telling in both help about as much as you'd expect, I tried to suffer through it and look past it but it just grated on me at every turn. And they were given BG3. Yay? OMG. Just when you think publishers can't get more stupid...

Metro Exodus: had to try to ignore all the speech it was just so utterly awful, badly written almost non existent story, awful dialogue and voice acting was even worse. Open world was so bland, gunplay was okay but who cares when everything around you is so boring and dull, eh... I could go on forever but won't.

Darkest Dungeon. Loved the game as a concept but just could not handle that RNG can and will absolutely beat skill and knowledge/builds. So much praise these guys get when simple game design appears to be completely beyond them and by that I mean failing in must win situations determined by the devs and not you means the game totally blows, IMO anyway.

What else can I moan about? I'll have a think about it and report back. I sound like I don't like videogames. Maybe I don't? That would be a turn up for the books.

Wasteland 2 - not because it's bad, or I wasn't having fun, but because I went on hiatus with it and when I returned to the game I couldn't remember what I was doing up to the that point, and going back and finding out was a slog that I wasn't up to.

Persona 5 - same reason as Wasteland 2, pretty much, but I did go back to P5, and finished it. Turned out to be one of my favorites games of all time.

Did you ever play Alice: Madness Returns? It has it's own set of problems, but is overall a much better game than the first one.

Agree on the avengers game, started it out and found it to be pretty good, but then it just went downhill fast...

also most assassins creed games, always enjoy them but they are just to repetitive and to long, so always loose interest being finishing them which kind of sucks!

Otherwise doom eternal I never got around to finish, horrible story which is forced on you ( in a freaking doom game!) and a gameplay loop that is difficult for all the wrong reasons just makes it a frustrating experience...

There are a lot of games that I have not finished just because I tend to bounce between them depending on my mood. But games where I made a conscious decision to stop and never go back is a short list.

Persona 4. The dungeons in this game are just a slog to me, and they are each meant to be played through twice. What sucks is I love everything else about it. Managed to play for 80 hours before the tedium overpowered the good parts. Tried to get back into it a few times, but the breaks didn't make it any better. Decided this one would remain unfinished.

Diablo 2. I probably played this game for 100 hours before I realized I wasn't having any fun. At some point the grinding and looting went from being enjoyable to just a straight up addiction. I think it's why I never got into MMORPGs and these loot box games when they got big. Diablo 2 showed to stay away.

Rage. I do think the first Rage gets a bad rap. Putting car combat in an fps was a brilliant idea, and the AI was pretty good for the time. But about half way through, I felt like I'd seen all the game had to offer and put it down for good.

Recently, Metro Exodus. Was a bit of a slog. Too cinematic and chatty. Might go back and try to finish it someday, but I'm not in a hurry.

Dragon Quest XI. One of the best JRPGs I've played. It's just so damn long. Now I've forgot wtf I was doing, so if I am to play it again, I'll start from the beginning, and I have no idea when I'm gonna have the energy to do that.

Also, they completely fucked over the early adopters. Instead of letting you upgrade to the definitive edition, you have to buy the game again. **** that. That's also a reason why I haven't played the game again, I'm pissed.

The 3D GTA games. So boring. GTA1, GTA2 and Chintatown Wars > the rest.

Little Nemo: The Dream Master (NES). Awesome game, but too hard in the end.

A lot.

Reason: Bugs (Gothic Armada 2), game turned out to be not as good as reviews suggest (Divine Divinity 2), bad controls respectively no options to customize (some tower defense game, RE3R)

...and many more.

Recently I gave up on KOTOR. I can play old games with bad graphics, no problem, but the controls/gameplay in this game are way too dated and clunky for me to enjoy. The game didnt age well at all... I think I'll wait for the rumoured remake

That stated, yeah, I had to quit Final Fantasy XV. Really liked the premise, seemed decent, and I wanted to see ho the story planned out -- but I didn't realize game didn't have auto-saves. Found this out the hard way when I love 60-90 minutes of time after a death and had to re-do everything up to that point. Pass.

I've always committed to finish what I start in games so I'm proud to say most games ive played I've finished.... However the last few years I find myself playing to the diminishing return of the experience. As soon as I'm board I won't do chores to finish. I move along.

Far too many to begin building a list. The most common reasons are:

  • I got bored
  • Life got in the way
  • The game turned out to not be for me

Rarely do I rarely just give up because a game sucks. Rather I will supplement something else for gratification, then get sucked up into the other game and just forget about whatever it was I didn't care to finish. Simple as that.

Witcher III.

It outstayed its welcome. I’ve tried three times to push myself to finish it, but once I get to the final area my interest just dies, and the story nor mechanics aren’t enough to retain my interest.

@ratchetclank92: Yeah, FF is increasingly turning into a movie experience with zero challenge.

Try some of the early Final Fantasy games. If you can put up with the outdated graphics, you will find out that they don't play themselves and are a LOT better than the modern iterations. I must have completed Final Fantasy 4 and 5 about 10 times each. Great stuff.

I think the record for me as far as buying a game and playing it the least before quitting was Skyrim.

Probably played the game for barely an hour or two before coming to terms I was probably not going to like the game.

Never turned on Skyrim again.

Cool. I didn't get to Alice until years after release because it didn't review that great, but picked it up on a deep discount and liked it a lot. Level design and art direction are great, my main complaint is I feel like it doesn't have enough gameplay variety to fill it's length.

And yes, I realize "I wish it was shorter" is kind of a weird complaint for a game that isn't all that long.

The one that comes to mind first is Breath of the Wild... and I've given that game many chances! I just can't get into it. There are numerous reasons why, but I think the biggest thing is that I just find it too big and empty. I played a good 20 hours of it (probably more), and I just hit this wall of boredom. It just felt like I spent 80% of that time spamming the sprint button, running through empty fields.

I know I'm in the minority here, but give me the more linear Zeldas any day.

Ocarina of Time. Twice I made it up to the Shadow Temple just to have someone copy over my save with their own. After that 2nd time I just never went back to it. Still have it, so I may get back to it one day. Been 20 years now.
