Some games that come to mind for me are:

  • Octopath Traveler 2 - one of the best RPGs I’ve played in a very a long time. Maybe it was overlooked because of its visuals and the fact that the original game was not on PlayStation.
  • Astral Chain - one of the most unique action games out there. I think this was another one that was judged on its visuals as well. It also had bland characters that were not marketable lol. but it’s a fun game!
  • Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth - if you’re a Yakuza fan, you didn’t overlook this one. But for the non fans out there, there’s a lot to enjoy about this game. They managed to make it into an accessible JRPG with goofy humor and those classic Yakuza mini games.
  • Neon White - unique speed running platform game with guns, it’s fun! I think because it’s a niche concept, wasn’t very marketable and the visuals didn’t help either.

What about you, SW? What games were overlooked in your opinion?

Astral Chain is a great pick.

I'm playing Lords of the Fallen now and I'm surprised by how good it is.

Every time this is asked, I'll always answer: Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy.

Seriously, it's on Steam, Switch, and the Xbox classic version is DL/BC on One/Series (and patched of the fatal save flaw too). GET IT!

I'm gonna give some proper hidden gems that recently I been itching to replay:

1. Fragile Dreams - Wii

Loading Video...

2. Warhammer 40K: Squad Command - PSP

Loading Video...

3. Crimson Gem Saga - PSP. (I still held hopes for a sequel someday. That damn clifthanger ending is bullshit they literally ends it when plot was at peak too!)

Loading Video...

Shoutout to Fist of North Star on PS4 too! That games was friggin amazing. made by the Yakuza team.

Destin had a video recently about the people's disappointment in the current gen with regard to AAA games and how the future of gaming will likely see smaller studios and publishers take over the role that AAA publishers and developers have been lacking in recent years.

As someone who hasn't been disappointed with gaming this gen, reflecting off what Destin said, it's probably because I do enjoy the non-AAA games from smaller studios and publishers. It's fair to say much of it does get overlooked. But there's a lot out there. For me, too much to play, not enough time.

Psychonauts 1 & 2. Both were brilliant games. I think what made them sell poorly was the art style. Most just assumed that they were kiddy games, but they're anything but that.

Deus Ex.

Now, hol' up a second. I know a lot of you are like "Oh really? I always hear that game mentioned as one of the greats" and while it is mentioned as one of the greats by true gamers and aficionados, it was both at the time of its release and for a long time after not really held in much regard nor was it widely played.

People didn't like that it was a first-person RPG, and not a first-person action game with RPG mechanics. They didn't like how when you aimed, you had to wait for the crosshairs to focus. They couldn't get past the initial "Liberty Island" level as they thought it was poorly designed.

I just think it was overlooked by gamers in general. And now the series is essentially dead because despite the high quality of the entire franchise over the years, it just didn't sell enough to warrant more installments. So it is objectively overlooked in addition to being critically overlooked.

Rushdown Revolt. It's like Smash Bros for fans of more traditional fighting games. The modders behind Project M made a game called Icons, that failed. A new team took the remnants of that game, and made RR. People liked it, but they made one mistake. The game was free to play, but online was locked behind a $25 season pass.

Now the game is free with some cosmetic dlc, but the player base is already dead. Bummer. Great local multiplayer game though.

Definitely agree about Astral Chain... very underappreciated.

Platinum Games has had a fantastic generation on Switch. Hopefully it will continue with Switch 2.

Arena wasn't too bad if you know what you're doing. I got 1080/1100, didn't get the treasure trove achievement, missed a couple of items on my second run through and didn't want to start a third.

I did play it for 2-3h at a buddies house the first week it came out. It was bad. It had this same'ish looking environment that almost all UE5 games has, and i just can't stand it.

original Kingdoms of Amalur

Alpha Protocol

Tales of Symphonia Chronicles because of Tales of Symphonia II

X-Men Destiny

then other stuff such as Resident Evil Outbreak, Gun, War of the Monsters, Haunting Ground, Silent Hill Shattered Memories, Silent Hill Origins, Star Trek Invasion, Monkey Hero, Doom Troopers(Super Nintendo), Magic of Scherherezade NES

That's the thing, if you put a lot of effort in your game, the game won't look same'ish to other UE5 titles. Just look at Wukong or Callisto. Callisto might be a shit game, but it doesn't have the UE5 copy pasted vibes. You need to create your own assets and textures instead of using UE5 store assets that look like shit. But every dev using this engines chooses the easy path, and that's how all UE5 look so similar.

@hardwenzen: I'm pretty sure you were praising the game visuals too, when you were hyping it to a 11/10. Anyway, this is far from an asset flip. The game looks great and plays great.

Its not bad to the point of being an asset flip, no, but the artists working for the studio sure are shit. And i was hyping its visuals because what was shown pre launch in the trailers was pretty much the best what the game had to offer, while in normal gameplay everything is gray and brown. Also, i don't want you to troll my 11/10 reviews, bro, cuz i ain't giving these lightly.

Tyranny from obsidian.

Amazing story, player agency, replayability but got ignored because of its smaller scale.
