How about the PS1, Saturn, and N64 gen? organic_machine
Yeah, I'll go with this one too. It was when gaming really hit the mainstream.
the ones going from 2d to 3d graphics...genesis to PS1 and SNES to N64 and such.Pinkyimp
It was a big jump, but due to the technology being so crude at the time, the 16-bit games actually look less dated than alot of the psx/n64 3d games.
The biggest jump for me would have to be the jump from the psx/n64 to the PS2/GC/Xbox
I wold say the second generation. Prior to that, gaming was either at the arcade or on your friend's dad's intellivision, lol. When NES and Master System came out was when people owning a home console became really popular and that's also when we started seeing video game ads on T.V.

Its pretty hard to argue with this, not only was there a huge leap in 3D games, but CDs came into play finally, and FF7 brought RPGs into the mainstream. Also this was the start of nintendos fall from grace.
PS1/N64 era.
Real 3d finally comes into full play. Nintendo finally get kicked off it's thrown. Console finally start using CDs. And so many great franchises are born and reborn. Genres are reinvented. The Playstation makes gaming more main stream. RPG gaming gains popularity in the west. The analog stick. Rumble. If Im not mistaken, this is when online gaming also becomes more prominant on the PC. The arcade start to die.
On a more serious note than my other comment, what about the leap from no graphics (text based games and what have you) to games actually using graphics?ONLYDOD
Exactly. That's why I'm surprised people are making such a big deal out of the jump to 3D.
That's why I say the age when consoles became common place in homes and games began being advertised on T.V. was the biggest defining point. Technology will always get better, but the break through from "nerds and arcades only" to"socially acceptable and common place" could only happen once. It was bound to happen at some point, and the NES/Master system generation was the one that did it.
I can't really see any other age making such a huge impact on society, unless you count when professional gaming became a reality or when World of Warcraft showed that 12 million people around the world actually enjoyed paying $15 a month to play a single video game. But that push from obscurity to mainstream was a defining point, so the NES generation I think had the biggest impact.
SNES era -> PS1 era
Games got way way way deeper. New genres were made and all the old ones got radically altered and improved.

Definately the NES. It single handedly saved console gaming and influenced every console moving forward.
I chose the jump to current gen..... there are other generations the introduced significant ideas.... but this gen there are alot of changes, not just limited to "power of the console"....
Wii = Motion Controls + pulling in the casual crowd/non-gamers like never b4.
360 = Online Functionality + Achievements (fun but useless.... just like videogames)
PS3 = ummm..... well.... Blu-Ray? No.... new mediums come along all the time. Oh I know, motion controls... oh wait, Wii is doing that 10 times better. Oh I got it..... 4D Graphics...... :P
