I think any 2D game can be great in 3D, if done properly. Like platformers, for example.

Not a genre, but Sonic is only good in 2d. The best 3d game he's come up with is Sonic Heroes and that was only decent.

Agreed. SM64 and SMG are just as good as SMB, SMB3, and SMW were for me.

I disagree. In my Opinion, the 3d metroids are like awesome. The atmosphere, the feeling its all awesome. I don't get that in the 2d ones.

Fighters pretty much, and SOME platformers.

Fighters. And please keep Sonic the Hedgehog in 2D. His 2D stuff is great, but they really haven't got Sonic figured out in 3D. The Dreamcast version was OK but I prefer 2D Sonic.

Fighters without a doubt.

Platformers can go either way. They're pretty even IMO, Mario has been terrific in both 2D and 3D.

I don't believe there is any particular genre that works better in 2D. Just certain "formulas", such as Castlevania.

I totally missed the 2D Sonic, the formula for the 3D one just isn't working for me. As for genre it easily goes to fighting, think Mortal Kombat if you will.;)

It goes by a game by game basis. Either one has the potential to be better than the other. Obviously FPS is out of the question though.

That's perfectly fine, some people just didn't like the added run feature in 3 or let alone the combos system. For me mk2 is for fun while mk3 is for competitive play. The 3D ones are good but to me the combat feel sluggish which was totally different from the 2D kombat which is why so many people dislike MKDA and Deception.

Oh sorry about that. I would say the 360 because it a perfect port of the arcade one. I haven't played the PS2 version so I don't know if it's the arcade one or not. The DS also have the arcade port but that one isn't really used for competitive play. If you like noob and rain then I say the non-arcade ones(Saturn,Gensis,SNES) are better.

i competitive play the DS one, well since i dont have a 360 lol. 360 probably has a better online system but the DS isnt too bad. IDK about the ps2 version i think its an arcade quality port as well but no online. the PS3 has MK2 which is one reason i want a ps3 :(

Lol I just played umk3 on the DS today. The only thing I hated about the DS is they took out the timer at the character select screen.:| People always leave me there hanging when I pick my characters.:(

Mario and Sonic were better in 2D, but I'd be willing to argue that Banjo Kazooie was about the finest example of 3D platforming. It couldn't be done in 2D.

Honestly, there aren't many things in which I liked 2d better.

I mean, it's fun, but I'll take Ratchet > Any 2d platformer and Tekken 2/3/4 over any 2d fighter.

And shooter? seriously? Except some light gun games and like Rushin attack for NES, I dont remember alot of good 2d shooters.

None. I even think platformers are much better in 3D. Much more immersive.

Also why do people say 2D fighters > 3D fighters? Regardless of wether it's 2D or 3D,it's still the exact same gameplay. The only thing 3D changes is it makes it look a bit better.
