What happened to Cheat Codes in gaming?

Remember when playing some game on your PS1 or N64, maybe PS2 or Xbox, you could activate cheat codes to change the game, or unlock stuff? Those were awesome! How come modern day games on Xbox 360 or PS3 or Wii don't have cheat codes anymore? Could you imagine if a game like Assassins Creed or Call of Duty had cheat codes like enemies have giant heads, unlimited ammo, unlock all levels or unlock a secret weapon in the game.

Now people can just download a hack instead of searching for a cheat code, type it in everytime they play.

This, only hard game ive played in the last liek 2 years is demon souls. And thats what made it great! I wish companies would stop babying their employees.

cheat codes are still around... they just call them DLC instead, and they cost money :(

skate 3 is a prime example... back in the day it was, input so & so codeto unlock all upgradesfor your skater.. now u have "pay $2 to unlock all upgrades"

The PC is rampant with those. But Cheat Codes like Mortal Kombat Cheat Codes kinda Went away at the Turn of the 5th Generation (N64, PSone)

Games are too easy now.

It's like the devs have just turned all the cheat codes on, and there is no option to turn them off.

Red Dead Redemption has cheat codes. That is the last game I can think of.

Now some games offer you the possibility of paying to unlock certain things, much easier than searching for cheat codes.

For one thing: console (we might as well ignore the PC in this thread as it's irrelevant IMO) games are less frustrating and easier to pick up these days.

I want everyone to do this right now:

Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Enter.

I think they should bring back old cheat codes and gamesharks, they were a lot of fun, I can still remember levitating Link around Hyrule Castle... good times.

Well heres the thing cheat codes were not that prevailent...cheat devices were, and Code makers like Pelican *code breaker* Madcatz *gameshark* and Datel *pro action replay* have fallen by the way side, the ps2 was the last console to officially use these cheat devices, DS uses a form of one..psp does not.

slowly these companies have been froze out because of ultra security measures console makers are taking to stop piracy.

I also wish there were more easter eggs like the Scarab Gun in Halo 2...

Some publishers realized they could charge for them. The rest I imagine found the time required to implement them was better spent elsewhere.

I'm happy they're gone. I hated seeing my friends cheating on some game :D

There are more powerful cheats now however. That can be used in online play. >< That's much worse than them codes...

achievements and trophys happened to cheat codes. kinda pointless to have an achievement system if you can just plug in a code and win.

I sort of miss them. The last game I played with good ones was Medal of Honor Frontline.
