I dont post a lot here, I was just wondering since this console has to be authenticated every day, what happens like 10 years from now when their servers arent supporting the console anymore, are the games still going to play or? Or lets say that Microsoft leaves gaming, maybe I am asking questions that cant be answered now.

Yes they do. Once every 24 hours or you can't play them.

Unless M$ removes the check in, they will not be playable if M$ decides to kill the servers.

In the situation that MS decides to keep on with the DRM crap, then I suppose it would be logical to think that before "shutting down the servers" they would release a firmware patch to turn off the DRM so that people who bought the games can still play them offline.

Second to last paragraph.. http://news.xbox.com/2013/06/connected "With Xbox One you can game offline for up to 24 hours on your primary console, or one hour if you are logged on to a separate console accessing your library. Offline gaming is not possible after these prescribed times until you re-establish a connection"

You would think, but they're really going against the gamers with the XBox One. They're acting like they just do not care one bit what gamers this time around...

People will be forced to purchase there stuff digitally for full price, it wont work though...How many people actually pay for music and movies if they have the ability to get it for free, The only way imo for it to work is to have a subscription based model like they would have for cable tv and it will probably be only one box that will be available and that providers offer different service and to make this work they need to get as many people as possible, If they have a billion consoles which is subscription based and with that the fees could be lower so people can justify the subscription in mass numbers, Microsoft probably incorporate digital media thing and slap a monthly subscription on it including selected music, movies and games and with that money they can fund the games, pay for the royalties of the movies and music. They will probably make you pay extra for new content like they do with pay per view like pay for a game and rent it and then it will go into the service as a regular product with your regular service.

It is software. Since every console will be online, they could simply patch the consoles to disable it and enable play offline. Simple....

not what i meant. i meant a literal requirement for checking in. like it being truly impossible to play without doing so and not even ms being able to do anything about it.

There is still a question on if we can sell the Xbone machine once we are done, down the road...

To answer you TC, you won't be able to play games a generation after this when the Xbone is eventually taken offline, unless things change.

For the sake of those who may buy a Xbox One, I hope you're right. Otherwise, they'll be left with $500 paperweights.

I am thinking that's exactly what will happen. When their next console is released and support for "last gen" systems has run dry on the money making side they will lift drm and move on to the new stuff. I honestly think that the way all these current electronics are built they won't be around 20+ years like cartridge based gens. Most of the early disc based systems are crapped out when I buy them. I see broken PS2 systems sell by the boatload at my local used game store. Modern systems just are meant to last unfortunately.

You remember the ET games that got dumped in New Mexico, well there was some space left over for any other epic failure to join it and it would seem that the X1 is that very thing that will be going there :)

Another question for Microsoft, they need to speak up. Someone asks a sensible question, 90% answers are unfounded and are based around Microsoft either being evil, working with the government or not having a clue. You get the odd sensible person who says hang on it wouldn't be difficult to sort with xyz. The issue I have is I believe Microsoft do have a plan, but have just not communicated it. Both consoles are moving towards cloud based gaming, answers will come before launch. Lots to be learned from both consoles.
