What has been this year's biggest disappointment?
Going to go with AP for this....

also trueim gonna go with tiberium twilight on this one. Seriously, probably one of the most renowned franchises in the RTS genre gets a craptacular finale by a crappy overhaul and multiplayer so unbalanced it should punishable

Splinter Cell Conviction for me, I really didn't like how much they toned down the competitive multiplayer aspect of its online component (SvM) , and I don't care much for Co-Op,
Almost all those are massive dissapointments to me, while FFXIII was a damn good game, it really felt like they cut the game in 1/2 without towns or any real hub areas.Jynxzoradd to it the craptacular story and characters...it was the only main series FF game I can say...sucks.
I don't call Heavy Rain really disappointing, I call it pretentious and overrated. Along with God Of War III, it is the most overrated games this year so far.Toss up between Heavy Rain and Conviction for me.

Mass Effect 2 with it's nerfed RPG elements and Splinter Cell Conviction with it's nerfed stealth elements.
which made Mass Effect 2 a much better game.... Alpha Protocol's combat was brought down from its "RPG elements".Mass Effect 2 with it's nerfed RPG elements and Splinter Cell Conviction with it's nerfed stealth elements.

I think Final Fantasy XIII is great! I feel bad that it gets such a bad rap. I have a three-way tie so far this year: Lost Planet 2 (I really, really liked the first one), Alpha Protocol (so much wasted potential), and Aliens vs. Predator (has anyone that thinks that game is awesome actually played another shooter, especially AvP2?) Runners-up: Star Trek Online (shallow, and completely misses what makes Star Trek great) and Crackdown 2 (it's the same game as the first; why does it even exist? It doesn't address a single damn thing that was a problem before. What was the point of it all?) /endrant We should talk about games that far surpassed our expectations! I'll start: Blur. When I played that game last year, it wasn't close to being fun. I am so glad it turned out so well.Kevin-VFinal Fantasy XIII's story was awful. Easily the worst in the series. Terrible characters, needlessly convoluted storyline, bad dialogue. While the gameplay can be fun at times, it was mostly tedious, and Pulse, when the game opened up, was disappointing. Compare it to the series best, Final Fantasy VI, and other greats such as Final Fantasies IV and IX, and even the overrated but still solid VII, and it falls flat. Even XII, which I thought was the one that doesn't deserve all the bad rap, was better. I do give you Alpha Protocol. I cannot believe the guy who wrote Planescape Torment wrote AP.
Heavy Rain was pretty good at immersion , refreshing gameplay, and excellent ( for the most part) pacing, there were several moments of badassery, it was a great game overall imo, Conviction I agree though.Toss up between Heavy Rain and Conviction for me.

Just out of curiosity, when you played Lost Planet 2, did you play co op or have to play by yourself due to playing it before the game was actually launched?

Red Dead Redemption. I don't like doing chores for annoying underdeveloped characters. Also, the duel's suck so much. Rockstar completely failed at capturing the essence of duels. The game is good, but it's a lot of wasted potential for awesomeness.AAllxxjjnnOne of the years best...however, too many comical characters at the wrong times and awful pacing. It should lose out to ME2.

^This; Gameplay was fun for a few hours, then it started to get really boring. GTA has the same effect on me.
I played huge portions of the game in co-op with folks in the office as well as with other journalists, including the Joystiq and IGN reviewers.Just out of curiosity, when you played Lost Planet 2, did you play co op or have to play by yourself due to playing it before the game was actually launched?

XIII may not be as good as many prior FF games (II will forever be the worst in the series; X-2 is the worst of the more modern FFs, imo), but I still think it deserves to be played, and is great on its own terms. I really liked it.
I think FFX-2 is better than XIII, although it is has poor dialogue. It at least gave me a lot more freedom and multiple endings. And Yuna is a very good character, unlike the cast of XIII.

I think Final Fantasy XIII has fallen into the same trap Resident Evil 5 fell into last year... While they're in no ways bad games, they were hugely hyped yet ended up not being anywhere on par with their predecessors, thus why they were big disappointments for a lot of people.
From the ones I´ve played,FFXII and C&C 4 were the biggest disapointments.
I see Alpha protocol on your poll and I can understand why(too much bashing from the critics),but so far is(along with STALKER CoP and Napoleon TW)my favourite game this year.
Many of the "problems" that critics see in AP were present in Deus Ex(a game that GS gave a 8.2...)as well, and look how much love that game get´s these days(and for a good reason,it´s one of the best games ever made).

Here's a very interesting article about the differences between European and US reviews of Alpha Protocol.
Red Dead Redemption. Rockstar REALLY need to learn how to make games with good controls.
Also, the wild west is ****ing empty. We all know that, so why make a huge, empty game? No one wants to ride their horse for 10 minutes to accomplish a mission they don't care about, then have to ride all the way back to town once the few minutes of mediocre shooting is done.
I will say that the story was good, and I liked most of the characters, but the part where you had to actually play the game sucked. GTA IV had many of the same problems, except the world wasn't empty and unfun.

But for Deus Ex, the problems were new, and was a result of th egame being one of the first of its kind. For AP, they should have learned from Deus Ex's flaws...they didn't.[QUOTE="Arach666"]

Very interesting indeed, and it kind of confirms a trend that I always noticed. US reviewers sometimes seem to be blinded by the big budget games and usually they have little else to say than praise, but when it comes to games developed by smaller studios they are usually quick to point all it´s flaws. The EU reviewers are quite diferent from this(not always, but in general)and I started noticing this from the moment I started using vg sites. Oh well,I guess that´s why one of my favourite games,Omikron, was GOTY in my favourite mag(Mega Score)and usually very well recieve in Europe and then sites like GS give it a 6.0...From the ones I´ve played,FFXII and C&C 4 were the biggest disapointments.

But it did had some problems with the gunplay and with dated graphics, two of the most mentioned "problems" in AP and especially in DX(mainly the graphics).
I was disappointed by Nier and Resonance of Fate. Both games were quite boring for me, but RoF is definitely the better of the two.

Japan has insane arcade-esque games where grinding and unrealistic actions are valued, Americans have big expensive hollywoodish games that highly value online multiplayer, and Europeans have content-rich open world games based in a less glamorous view of reality
