I think Dragon Age's combat was excellent. It was a nice change of pace from the real time combat found in most games nowaday.
If you played this game without pausing you'd probably die in about 10 seconds unless you play easy on consoles.

i actually played the 360 version this way as a warrior on normal, it was a **** to play, didn't help that i had no idea how to use my mates properly, and yes i managed to beat the game
got the game on PC and played as a mage and always paused battle, makes the game so much easier and more fun
What does real time combat in a RPG like Dragon Age mean?
Like God of War or Darksiders or something? Where i press A and B in different combos? If thats what you mean i'm not sure, would remove alot of tactical depth but i don't know how else you mean real time, its not a shooter so you can't do it like ME.

I just got the PC version and I like it a lot (about 30 minutes into the game) but feel the game had more potential as a real time RPGplay it on easy on the consoles and it is all real time. I think i had to pause it a few times on normal, and that was during
the prison break sequence, the underground level, and the end game
so im sure easy wouldve been cake :P
DA is pretty much real time with pause capability. Pause usage can be reduced with a proper keyboard bindings. The game has to factor in Xbox 360 controller i.e. which doesn't provide enough buttons.I think it would make the game so much better and would have recieved higher scores and much more hype. Dragon Age has real time combat, meaning it isn't turn based. Your characters and your enemies will continue to make basic attacks unless you tell them to do otherwise.
To answer your question: No, Dragon Age would not be better with direct player control. Why? Because there are a billion other action RPGs out there to choose from. The appeal of Dragon Age is that it plays like an old school RPG mechanics.
You could play real time if you want, but it would be hell for you. On the higher difficulty settings, the game requires you to be extremely tactical, so planning your attacks during pause is a must.
tactics lets your party do the work and you will only have to micro your main manPair that with only having to manage one character and I would've bought it.

Which is why I didn't buy it. :P Kinda wish there was a PC version of Demon's Souls, but there isn't so I'll just get over it and go play something else.Dragon Age is the best RPG since The Witcher, and no I dont agree.
NEEDING to plan ahead every single action and advancement in battle is what I loved about that game. I hear the console versions are sad imitations due to no AOE friendly fire and the like but play the game on PC, Isometric, on the hardest difficulty, and its the best damn game youve played in a very long time.

Looking forward to it, but judging by this review, I think I'd still prefer DS because of the camera angle and controls. D3 will have to fill the void :cry:Doesn't make sense. DA is all about tactical combat, which action rpgs don't really do. Plus ME2 is out..two months after DA, so this way both tactical and action fans get their share of fun
In order for Dragon Age to be good it would have to remake that whole crappy engine Bioware made for it.I think it would make the game so much better and would have recieved higher scores and much more hype. It would have made me like the game a lot more.

There is no tactics in DA. The AI is dumb no matter what you're difficulty level and the same strategy applies. Kill casters first more mages you have = easier, not hard to catch on. Brain dead single player shooters have more tactics than DA heck even checkers vs a 5 year old.Doesn't make sense. DA is all about tactical combat, which action rpgs don't really do. This. Definitely this.
You can tell the difference between the people who played on their consoles and the people who played on the PC in this thread.blue_hazy_basicI'm offended by that. :(

You CAN'T survive on the PC without pausing constantly, even at the lowest level.

Maybe you played just the consoole version, where the difficulty is simply laughable (and I'm not being a fanboy here, the difficulty in console versions is really cripped, to the point where the hardest console setting is much easier than PC medium). But on PC you need to do a lot of thinking to pull through the game, it's one of hardest challenges games have provided in recent years. Also..even if you could use the same strategy over and over again like a machine it would still be ten times more tactical than pure SP shootersDoesn't make sense. Well to be fair, you can't survive nightmare difficulty (on consoles) without pausing either. You just can't. The only time you could get away with not pausing is if you played it on casual.

You can tell the difference between the people who played on their consoles and the people who played on the PC in this thread.blue_hazy_basic
no no no no
turn-based Baldur's Gate-style FTW
dont fix something that's not broken.
maybe it sucked on the consoles with pausing, I don't know, because the only version worth playing is PC and its fine there.
Are you suggesting it woulda been better as a hack'n'slash? that's crazy man, I want to test my brain not my button combos
