What if Microsoft and Sony decided to merge?

Just read an article that brings up a good but highly unlikely possibility of Microsoft and Sony merging.

I think it would be great, Sony handling hardware development and Microsoft focusing on software. All their IPs would be on a single system, which would be a hardcore gamer's wet dream. It may give them the edge to get back at Nintendo for the beating Wii is putting on everybody this gen.

Why is it horrible? Everybody wins and MS/Sony would have the strongest line of titles next gen. Hell, we gamers would save a lot of money if we just bought one console for all those games.

Have to agree that the XMB is unique and easy, but that's not the focus of the article. If Microsoft and Sony co-developed a console I think they would opt for XMB instead of Blades (hell, they're basically the same anyhow) because of Sony's PSP. The PSP will still be around (or its successor) and you can count on it using the XMB regardless of a merger.

Oh, and this is just a hypothetical people, don't get all fanboy over this.

That ONE AAAe may be ONE game.. but thats ONE more AAAe than the PS3 has. More GOTY's than the PS3. More sales than the PS3. More million selling GAMES than the PS3. Those are sales that we can tout that you can't argue.

What does it matter if its not a third as powerful as the other two. Power has nothing to do with winning a console war.

So we may not get the BIG multiplats.. but call me when those BIG multiplats sell as many as SSBB will, or that matter.. when anything on the PS3 sells as well as it or SMG.

Have you played any of the wii games online ? Because if you actually have then you wouldnt know that its relatively lag free and almost every game has leaderboards the only gripe I have is the friend codes and the lack of a voice chat :wink:

So with that being said, sinc ethat game is also on the Ps2 and PC, the Ps2 and the PC have horrible third party access because of that one game? According to your logic the answer to that questiion is yes.

The reasons its not as powerful has been stated already (keep cost down so the CONSUMER can afford it)

One game thats AAAE is a bad thing now wow I didnt know that :o How many does the ps3 have again ? and last time I checked thats one more AAAE away from the 360

Not only that but if you take away all other previous titles that came out on other systems, you know stuff from the Virtual Console and ports, RE4 comes to mind, it still doesnt even equate to half of the amount of AAA the 360 has.

Another note, when I buy a video game console, I buy it for the games that it has, whether they be exclusive or not, I have no problems, and as it stands the 360 offers more AAA content than the Wii does.

Where did anyone from nintendo say they are targeting ONLY casuals and non gamers with the online model for the Wii? if there was one universal console, a console at the pricepoint of $600+ would NOT be a unheard of or uncommon idea. competition is ALWAYS a good thing in the gaming market, too much is not however. The market needs 2-3 consoles to stay alive, more and things become murky and less and things become expensive.

I'd much rather have Microsoft and Nintendo merge.

Xbox 360 online, but free!

Xbox 360 graphics, with motion controls!

Xbox 360 third party support, with Nintendo first party games!

Sony would just drag Microsoft to the pits of hell if they merged.

PS3 has far more AAA than the Wii. Wii has what, one more AAAE than PS3? (Soon to be tied if Resistance 2 on IGN is any indication). That leaves the Wii with what? AA titles? Im pretty sure the PS3 has more AA titles also.... guess we should go down to the A-level titles....see if Wii has more of those.
