$600 didn't kill Sony with the PS3 so it wouldn't do so now. Besides that, the only reason the PS3 cost as much as it did 7 years ago was the exorbitant cost of Blu Ray drives back then. Today they're much cheaper (and faster to boot) so it's much more reasonable to expect a $400-450 launch price for PS4.
It would hurt them. Look how big PS2's install base was. Look at how big the PS3's is. However, I have confidence that they'll never do that. They learned that not every Sony fan would be willing to get 2 jobs to get the new console. :P
I think the $600 price tag hurt what Sony could have been this gen, along with other things like the use of the Cell. But it still sold enough to remain relevant on the gaming market. What hurt Sony the most with the $600 PS3 was the loss they were taking on each console, and the PS3 cost Sony like a $5 billion loss from launch up until 2010, even PSN raked in $800 million in online revenues in 2010 and that wasn't even covering their expenses for PSN. What Sony needs to worry about this selling these things for more than they cost to make and distribute. The PS4's online features also need to be covered through Sony's online revenues so that won't be a drain on the company. They need to achieve that yet not price it so high it's not competitively priced, which I worry about since it seems for now they want to compete with a powerful console and that could be pricey.
No chance it will be $600. Lems are hoping against all odds that lightning strikes the same spot twice but it won't happen again. Everything we've seen about the PS4 suggests Sony is going the cheaper more efficient route this time. It's the reason they chose AMD to build their CPU and GPU this time instead of Nvidia and TEH CELL.
I can't see why it would be more than $400. The PS3's high cost at launch was due to Blu-Ray, and at the time it was the cheapest Blu-Ray player on the market and still sold at a loss for Sony. Times have changed, though, and nothing screams that the PS4 would be priced anywhere near that terrible price point that stigmatized the console for a good while. If it is, though, Sony will be finished.
At that price it better include 2 controllers, 2 games, a year PS+ sub, headset, hdmi cable, and be a limited edition skinned PS4, just to start off with.
Then Sony would have learned nothing from the PS3 and would deserve to go bankrupt and I would laugh at their ignorant ass when they did. With that said, the PS4 won't be $600.
The thing that people don't realize is with Sonys steep price tag comes quality. You get what you pay for.

It would sell out for the first few months and then spiral into shame numbers just like the PS3 did until it had what the gaming public considered a reasonable price.
I'd buy it because I know i would be given alot of amazing experiences in return

Anyone buying "a" console expects that. :P I see the ps3 being near $600 this time around, considering what it has in it. I don't see anyway to get it cheaper unless sony does something similar to what M$ is doing. They could charge less for the console and make you sign an agreement to pay for plus at a higher rate. That could be a way, but I don't see it being likely.
I honestly doubt Sony wouldn't learn from their mistake in the PS3 launch. If it does happen, I won't buy it until a price drop. But I never wanted the PS4 anyway, I'm not ready for next gen just yet.
