There is a lot of confusion on this forum about what a casual gamer is, so what exactly are they in your mind? Are they:

A) The people who prefer short fun experiences like Wii Sports, PopCap titles, Tetris and the other "short bursts of fun" type games. They don't play very often and when do it is for a fun when they have some spare time. Games are a casual laid back distraction to them

Or

B) The gamers who purely play games, taking little notice of gaming media and buy yearly updates of titles like Madden and Fifa. They often buy titles based on licenses like 50 Cent and other film tie in games as well as other titles like Grand Theft Auto. Games for them are more about status and having that "cool" factor that licensed games have.

For me option B has always been what a casual gamer is to me.

Please note this is not meant as an attack on any group, nor is it meant to be an elitest type of statement. Afterall I also play games like Tetris, GTA and many other games. I am not a huge fan of gamers being seperated into groups since it almost always leads to snobbery, but it has happened anyway and there seems to be some confusion as to what each group is so I hope we can clear the issue.

A mix of both. Or the person who spends like 10 minutes playing a game and then gets bored of it, and doesnt touch it for a another 4-5 days. But he/she does that for EVERY game, so its not the game but just them.

a casual gamer is some one who likes to play games like tetris, snake or PAC man just simple games. they don't buy wii, ds, psp ps3, xbox etc. they played them on the pc because its free or cell phones because its cheap.

I voted B although to me a casual gamer is someone who doesn't game intensely. It's someone who only really turns on their xbox when they have nothing else to do or when they need a fun time. Someone who doesn't keep track of achievements and points and highscores. Someone who plays games purely for the joy of it. I think a casual gamer is the kind of person that plays games for what they're supposed to be: fun. Not "AAA", or "Amazing online," or "Teh graphix!!!!11". They play for fun.

Either the person with a Wii who only plays sub par party games like Cooking Mama etc. or a person who owns a 360 and all they ever play are sub par online FPS and nothing else. Both are equally shallow gamers.

Casual Gamer: A person who plays games for fun. A casual gamer does not care about the ratings, sales, or popularity of a game. The casual gamer does not prey on negatives about a game, but emphasizes the positives and thoroughly enjoys playing games.

Anyone who posts in here should read this: http://malstrom.50webs.com/birdman.html

It's long, so anyone who is too lazy to read is SOL.

If that is a hardcore gamer, then what do you call the 93.6%* of the posters here who post game scores, game/console sales, polls to find the most popular game, etc. for the purpose of 'claiming ownage' of other game fans?

*I completely made up the percentage, but you get my point.

I would call them fanboys. hardcore gamers play games because they like them not the review. the only difference between a casual and a hardcore gamer is the latter put in more time playing games.

They're called fanboys, and they give the hardcore gamers a bad name.
