Often times I see a lot of gaming terms being thrown around on this forums. I'll read it but then start thinking to myself WTF does that mean lol. I really have no clue. It's like reading a foreign language to me. I've tried Google, but I still don't get it lol. So can any of you guys help me out with some of the more popular terms like AA, MLAA, and explaining it in a simple way for casual gamers like me? And all that other gibberish Thanks guys. It's much appreciated

In proper dumbed down speak, it's just how jagged a straight line will look. More/the better the AA the smoother the line. You could probably have googled it though.

AA could mean anti-aliasing or

AA could refer to a game that scored 8 or 8.5 here on Gamespot.

Oh did you mean anti-aliasing? I thought you meant these review terms that showed up like AAE and AAAAE and whatnot.

Speaking of those can anybody tell me where they came from and what they mean?

Errm kind of, but not always if you understand, graphics is a very general term which AA, textures (how a surface looks), effects like particles, draw distances (how far the game shows in the world), framrate and so on look. For example a game could have very good AA but really poor textures so not have good graphics. AA simply deals with lines and edges of objects.

Oh ok, so AA only applies to objects

While AA mostly applies to just objects, it can have an affect on how well the game runs. This was especially noticeable back when hardware wasn't as powerful as it is now. It could cause frame rates to drop and appear to cause lag due to the hardware not able to handle it. My report, albeit now 7 years old, still stands as to what AA and AF do. Effects of Antialiasing and Anisotropic Filtering on Ghost Recon has the details and the pics to show how each affect a game and frame rates.

They're made of triangles (i.e. polygons). They were also made of squares (quads) and cubes (voxels) but that is less common.

You're right.

To be more precise, it's something many modern console games lack, and many more have, but utilize poorly (due to hardware limitations).

BTW: Aliasing is an artifact of the way our display systems work, namely pixels. When you have little colored squares representing an image, you will ALWAYS have aliasing. How noticeable that aliasing is, depends on a number of factors, including pixel density (number of totla pixels divided by the area) and the types of objects that makeup the image.

Anti-aliasing is just the generla temr for the various methods we employt to get rid of this problem.
