What is innovative about Spore?

As far as I see it, it's several genres shoved together with a unit editor like in some RTSs and sharing content online, which has been done before.

What isn't innovative about Spore?

I'm not saying it's going to be good, that has yet to be seen, but this is one of the most unique games I have seen in the past five years.

Spore transcends established gaming by amalgamating several fundamental genres, with a strong emphasis on customisation and user created dynamics.

Scope.

The manner in which it uses user created content.

The jury is also out on genre convergence.

The sheer scale of it, the creature editor itself how it's so easy to use but is pretty much limited only by your imagination, being able to create characters with any number of legs and any type of body and instantly have it animated better than most games manage to animate their 2 or 3 static characters. And the whole idea of growing from single celled organism into a space faring race and the idea to populate the galaxy by races created by other people. You could pretty much replace the word innovation with Spore, at least I wouldn't mind, really.

Saying that Spore is just several genres mushed together with a unit editor is like saying LBP is like a copy of Forge from Halo 3.

Spore lets you create pretty much everything with the editors, they are easy to use, but have alot of depth to them.

oh, and while we are at it...Shacknews got to play an hour of Spore...and according to them...Will Wright pulled everything off.

Thats not innovative. Physics in a 2.5D platformer, co-op and online web 2.0 style map sharing, basically a real time map creator that affects your avatar and you use that to complete goals or mess around. Thats innovation.

With spore it's essentially you can design units and share them automatically :| thrones

not just units. buildings, vehicles, plants, you name it.

You get to create a species and follow it up to galactical proportions, tera-forming landscapes and literally creating worlds of creatures with the ability to go from single cell organisms to a civilisation. Thats innovation too.

The only innovative thing I see is physics. Co-op and map sharing is hardly innovative.

There's a difference between invention and innovation. An invention is creating something totally new. An innovation is taking something that already exists, and building up on it to improve/create something a bit new.

what is web 2.0 style map sharing ? what is real time map creator ? besides these two poitns which i don't understand none of the other stuff are really innvoation. you have more enhanced physics - nothign new, change your avatar's look - nothing special etc
