I see so many users so sure that Sony will charge to play online, there is a possibility of course but the pig "plus" about PSN is that it's free. Maybe they'll release PS4 at a lower cost but make you pay for online? (lets just say PS4 is $599.99 but instead of making your customers pay that price, it's $399.99 or at least $499.99 plus a $60 per year for online) I doubt other companies would utilise it, it's only Microsoft who made users have to pay for online, Nintendo's never done it, Sony's never done it. If they were going to charge for online, then wouldn't they have done it before? It's not really an alien idea, I'm sure it's crossed peoples minds in the past (though I reckon they wouldn't do it for fear of people abandoning them).

Its a copycat society. MS is making money off Live by the truckloads. You think Sony isnt going to try that next gen. They are in it for the money arent they?

I think Sony will start charging sometime this generation. PS+ was step 1 towards eventually charging.

It would definitely be a smart business move for both companies, but if Nintendo still has the same terrible online in its next console, I doubt anyone would really cough up money to play online, though they'll probably improve it.

The fact that PSN is free is a big thing for many people though. I had a friend who wasn't sure about PS3 or 360, most people don't want to hear lists of exclusives, I noticed that never works with people (except when fighting about which system is better) but when I told him that PSN is free he was really swayed towards PS3. Sure charging for online is good, but also if you have free online, you've got a lot more people wanting to get your system. PSN Plus is fairly new too, wouldn't they expand on that and leave PSN just basic online with the usual PS store stuff? Nintendo Wii's online wasn't really good, and I doubt Nintendo would charge for online with their next console. I hope they really work on making the online good though.

The difference in the sales of PS3s sold by having paid online (which is probably pretty small) I'm sure would more than be made up if they charged for online

I personally think the only reason Sony doesn't charge is because they need to have some things that attract potential buyers to their system instead of the 360.

I can't imagine Sony not charging if they were the dominant console on the market.

The fact that PSN+ exists makes me certain of this. Sony wants to charge. They just can't because they aren't the top selling HD console atm, and they know many buyers are purchasing the PS3 because of free online.

I don't know about Nintendo though. Until they have an online system like the 360/PS3 then they won't spend near as much to support it like Sony/MS do now.

There are only 2 reasons why Sony doesn't do it now .

It's because it's not as good as the 360's and they made a big deal about online being free when they launched.

99.5% chance Sony will charge for it next gen. Nintendo on the other hand needs an online to charge for. If their next gen console has online that rivals that if the competition then they will charge too.

It will happen for two reasons: 1)It is a great way for the companies to make additonal money. 2)Consumers have shown they will pay $50-$60 for online multiplayer.

sony might- they already have the optionary option right now

i dont think nintendo will because its family friendly and caters to everyone ,

not to be rude , but it is what it is ,

but we know sony will be 10 bucks less if they intend to go just charging route but who knows they might just continue what htier doing

offering plus benefits and keeping online free

Don't count on Nintendo charging for online in the future. Nintendo has stated many times in the past that they do not want to charge for online play. It's one of the reasons why Nintendo did not introduce 3G into the 3DS. If Nintendo were to make an online service comparable to Xbox Live (which I higly doubt), expect it to be free of charge.

Nah, remaining free will drive many people away from MS, and even being first out won't help them again.

i could see sony doing it. why not? more moolah for them and if people want to play the likes of uncharted or KZ online then they have to pay. its not like they have an alternative service. its nice that they are not but i dont think thats going to last forever. as for ninty...who knows? there ninty...hard to predict. they could decide to actually take online services seriously and charge for it. but the thing is they dont have those expertise...they wouldnt know the first thing about making a good online service. they dont do service outside of customer service (something they are good at in my experience at least)..they make and sell games and gaming hardware. thats it. they could partner up with someone who does know what there doing....plug into steam in a similar way to PSN perhaps. so ninty and valve provide the steam works SDK to devs to use as they see fit. ninty then just hand off the responsibility of providing the service for the wii2 to valve or whoever they do decide to partner up with. this has many advantages for ninty but also some disadvantages. i just mention valve as am example but it could be any company thats experienced in that kind of thing. or they may just decide to say "heres a few APIs to access the wii2s online hardware....sort it out amongst yourselves and provide your own stuff". essentially the olden days of online PC gaming. they wouldnt charge for that mind but if they did take that approach then it would be an indicator that ninty themsleves wont bother with online in games in the future.

I would believe it was a big thing if suddenly people started dropping off Live. But their numbers aren't going down suddenly are they? It isn't that big a deal to most people I know. In fact it really is only complained about here in my life. I pay more per year for a cell phone, cable, ISP. My cell phone per month is more than Live per year. Sony will charge eventually, imo. It is too much income left on the table to NOT be a smart business move. The model has been proven to work by Microsoft. That is how business works. Someone takes a risk and others see if the risk was worth it, and follow suit, maybe for a little cheaper. I doubt they will do it this gen, but as long as it's a source of income for MS, then Sony will not pass this cow up.

I see the basefunctions remaining free (aka play games online for free), but more "premium parts" being charged.

Something like you can have more than 20 PSNfriends if your premium.

I can see your point. but what is compelling enough to make someone pay a fee? Playing online. People will say PSN plus is making money and maybe it is, but if you want to compel people to pay then make it something they really want and will use often enough to pay for. That is MP. MS may be seen as greedy, or evil by many, but in business terms they created a market and are raking it in. That's what it is about. Sony will not pass that money up, imo.

You never know, look at Move and Kinetic, I'm sure the Wii's success had at least something to do with them being created. Nothing wrong with copying another business, evolution is critical to survive in the business world.

just so everyone here including cows know if sony COULD charge for PSN this minute they would do it. The problem is if they started charging it would be no where near as good as XBL in terms of simplicity and sheer content. PSN is amazing just because its free, no one in there right mind would pay for the current PSN and sony would have shot themselves in teh foot. BUT if they can get there new PSN up to date and make it as streamlined as XBL than I see no reason for them not to charge.

people just assume they will copy... now that psn is equal to xbl , sony will have the advantage of being free. And no free doesnt automatically = better... but psn is good, deal with it

Because they're in this business to make money?
