Conundrum. Kinda want to play CP2077 so I can shit on it properly. I also don't, since it looks boring.
No one ever talks about why the game is good, I just see the occasional "it's a masterpiece" or "it's GOTY", but never see anyone talk about the game's mechanics or anything about why the game is good. Most likely because it isn't. When games are good, people are usually not shy about talking about what they think is good. Cool setpieces, neat mechanics, good story moments.. something. With CP2077 - nothing. Seems like a wholly unremarkable game with way too much hype.
So one part of me want to unravel the mystery of why people call it a good game, but another part of me doesn't want to play a boring game, and pay for it too. I guess the graphics takes it a long way? "Yeah, it's nothing special, but look! Shiny!"
with the dlc, it's a huge game, lots of interwoven stories, and the main plot is long, so you need to be prepped for that and pay attention as it can all get a bit convoluted. it take several hours alone to complete the opening mission, which then sets up the premise for the rest of the game, although it is quite a cool and inventive one tbf.
the story has peaks and troughs, some memorable moments, although some of it feels a bit heavy handed, but more plot depth and detail comes with the turf in an rpg. the side quests are pretty decent too. i only dipped into some, but most felt like they added to the experience rather than there just to fill up time.
mechanically it's solid. combat is fun, if a little on the easy side. the skill trees, abilities and upgrades are varied enough to let you build a character that suits a number of play styles. it's not going to set your world on fire but it's decent enough to carry the game. and the same with the missions. some have nice touches, make good use of the environments, of tools and mechanics etc. but some are a little more run of the mill.
visually it's impressive. the environments are well crafted, detailed and authentic, characters are generally on the right side of tolerable. dialogue is ok for the most part, although i wasn't keen on the protagonist's voice.
i think solid is the best word for it overall. it's about a 7/10 for me. if the theme appeals, go in expecting a long game, lots of story, but if you commit to it and let yourself get wrapped up in its world, chances are you'll at least get some enjoyment out of it. having a rough idea of your taste in games i couldn't confidently recommend it though, if i was to bet i think you'd probably peace out somewhere in the first 5-25 hours
