Poll What is the best Final Fantasy game since the PS1 era ended (post FF9)? (54 votes)

Final Fantasy X / X-2 37%
Final Fantasy 11 2%
Final Fantasy 12 20%
Final Fantasy 13 4%
Final Fantasy 14 7%
Final Fantasy 15 6%
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 1 24%
Spinoff Final Fantasy title (specify) 0%

I'm going with FF7 Remake Part 1. I've enjoyed other Final Fantasy games (10,12, even 15), but FF7 Remake got me really excited for the franchise again. Not only because I loved the original FF7, but it was actually really fun and engaging. Top notch gameplay, pacing was good for the most part (I liked how they handled side quests), characters and writing were great. Let's just say, I'm back to being a fan again. I'm even looking forward to FF16 (timed exclusive for PS5 😉). Ok, as for my ranking, here is what I'm going with:

  • FF7 Remake
  • FFX
  • FF12
  • FF15

I put FF15 at the end because I played the game at release it was really short on story content. It felt like an incomplete game. Battle system was good, but gameplay was repetitive.

How about you, SW? What is the best Final Fantasy game since the PS1 era ended (post FF9)?

IMO, the best Final Fantasy games were all available on the PS1. FFVI, FFVII, FFVIII, and FF Tactics. Past that, The only one I've thought was any good at all was Final Fantasy X. The franchise certainly peaked on the PS1.

I would so love a new Final Fantasy Tactics game if it was done faithfully to the original.

Not really big into the series. I enjoyed FF7 and X only. Counting FF7 Remake with FF7.

To answer the question, I'll give it to FF7 Remake because I actually finished it.

Mine:

  • FF12 is great and much better than FF10.
  • FF14 Shadowbringer has the best story and content of all FF.
  • FF7 Remake is the best FF sequel.
  • Bravely Default is best FF spin off post PS1 era.

Voted for FF12.

Bit of nitpick. Kinda unfair you group 10/10-2 together but omits FF13-2 and Lighting Returns. FFT Advance and FFT A2 as well as FFT remaster and FF12 Revenant Wings was released and sets in Ivalice(FF12) as well and features some FF12 characters.

Sorry, for FF13, I meant any of the FF13 games. Basically, I tried to include an option for all of the mainline games, and then left an option for spinoff. My bad!

Played all of them, voted X (IX is still the best :P). Out of the ones on the list, it was the one I enjoyed the most as a full package. Honourable mention to XII, probably the most fun and engaging gameplay-wise.

The best game in the mediocre series? That is a tough decision.

Never played a MMO, haven't played 7R. So that narrows the list a good bit.

Would go 12 > 10 > 15. Only one of those I still enjoy playing is 12.

Edit: Oh shit, forgot 13 exists. 😂

Thoroughly disliked 13, barely played 15 before giving up. Either at the bottom, don't care.

XII. Looking to play that again but it's damn expensive on Steam. It's a 3 year old remaster of a 15 year old game.

I didn't really care that much for any of the mainline games after 9, but I guess FFX wins by default, as it's the only one I've played more than once.

I picked FF14 in the poll, because Squeenix really did right with that game by completely blowing away the initial piece of crap it was, allowing everyone still playing to play for free until the world ended and the new FF14 began. And it's a pretty solid MMO.

I started 12 but never returned. How long does the game take to "hook" you?

Don't remember well enough to give an hour count, but it's definitely slow to start. Getting a full party and the gambit system opening up happen around the same time, would say that's when the game starts proper. Maybe like 4, 5 hrs in?

I found the early game much more enjoyable on a replay than my first time around (hated it).

Just to be clear, think it has pretty good gameplay... for a JRPG. A high bar. 😂

If you do go at it again, TZA version. Systems open up faster, plenty of good QOL changes.

Eh, maybe. Might just wait until all episodes are out, play it in the retirement home.

I think it’s a toss up between 12 and 7R. Both are fantastic and you can’t go wrong with either.

10 is good, 10-2 is ok, 13 is mediocre, 15 is good but falls prey to the first half being good and having a ton of potential but then running out of time and money so the second half is rushed and bad, and 14 is great with all of the expansions.

Ff7 R

FF13

FF10

Is my personal top 3, never understood the hate 13 got or the praise for 10, which I found utterly bland. Still better than everything else that has come in the FF universe though, sad how fare square has fallen in the last couple of decades

All ways thought FF12 was under rated. I would say FF12 is the best, but FF7:RE really got me hooked for the future. The combat loop is pretty engaging to.

I've liked FFXV way more than FFX.

XIV ok I guess too, but kinda hard to compare mmo to sp campaigns.

While I haven’t played Final Fantasy VII Remake yet I am confident enough to vote for it from all that I’ve seen from the game being played. From those that I have played I would go with FFX after that. FFXII, FFXIII, and FFXV are all kind of tied after that. I did enjoy those too though. Never played FFXI and FFXIV.

XII by far. One of my favorite games ever. XV would be a distant second. I think both games were made with a western audience in mind.

I played it back when it came out, back in high school. I remember it being pretty good, but different. I recently bought the Zodiac Age for Switch. I feel like this game would be great in handheld mode.

@SolidGame_basic: Zodiac Age was a very necessary update to the game. It's actually much more restrictive in how you develop your characters via job system. The original let you customize any character with any abilities/weapons in the game, which just made it too easy.

Recently played FF8 and it had the same problem of too much customization making the game a cakewalk.

FFX really put me off the series for a long time, I eventually played the one with lightning because I got it for free, cant remember which one that was but the game was so boring I never really got that far in it, just running on some long roads in the sky and flipping between characters, it put me off FF even more. Then the next one I played was 15 which I got for cheap to test out a new system id built at the time and that game was ok, the last third of the game seemed rushed. I'm hoping FFVIIR is really good as FFVII is second on my all time favourite games list. Id buy it for PC if it comes but I'm not buying a console to play it.

So for me its FF15.

I haven’t played Final Fantasy XII since back when it came out on the PS2. I did pick up the Zodiac Age version on the Xbox One when that came out. I really start playing one of these days to check out the differences.

10 and 12 were really good, but I did enjoy 10 more. That being said, 14 deserves some serious recognition for going back to the drawing board and building an excellent game from a dumpster fire. Gonna give it to 14 due to sheer effort, and being excellent.

FFX
FFXIV
FFVII:R

Eventually, with the other iterations of Remake released, it will likely unseat the others. But for now, this is my ranking.

I wasn't aware of that, but did notice the job system.

It's easy to forget crisis core as it was only PSP, but it did come out after PS1 era so it counts.

Pretty good game as well.

All the games have something going for them. Gameplay wise I’d go with the FFXIII series and the remake, story wise FFX and FFXIV, technical mechanics and semi-open world FFXII and FFXIV. FFXV is probably my least favorite but it did have decent side content and end game content.

Unfortunately, a lot of genres, a lot of series, and a lot of IPs did. It would be great if what happened around that time only happened to Final Fantasy. The PS1/N64 generation is, and may always be one of the best if not the best generation for gaming.

  1. Final Fantasy X - 9.7/10
  2. Final Fantasy VII: Remake - 9/10
  3. Final Fantasy XII - 8/10
  4. Final Fantasy XV - 7/10
  5. Final Fantasy XIII - 5/10
  6. Final Fantasy XIV - 4/10
  7. Final Fantasy XI - 3/10

That's how I would rank them.

Needless to say I am look forward to FFVII-2, FFVIII Remake, FFIX remake and FFX remake way more than 16,17 and 18...

FF 12 is best in series

FF 13-2 is also one of my favorites
