Is not an FPS. It's an Adventure Exploration Platforming game that's in first person perspective rather than traditional side scrolling or 3rd person 3D.
It's a FPS, it just happens to show you can make a FPS and not make it a game for idiots, and can have elements beyond just basic ass shooting. But it's a shooter, it's high points are point at thing and shoot.
One of the many reasons the Prime games should be called a FPS, the number one should be that it gives us a thing to point at when we go "hey the FPS doesn't need to be the same fucking thing, over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over"
my eyes hurts reading this.
Deus Ex is best of example of FPS not same thing over and over again. basically FPS RPG mix with stealth elements.
And I fucking love it for that, System Shock 2 as well. But like both games, I don't understand why we go out of our way to listen to Nintendo's bullshit, and act like that game isn't a FPS. Deus Ex and System Shock 2 would be even shittier FPS games than Metroid Prime, if judged on their shooting. The shooting in System Shock is just there to be there on some level. They are rpgs first and foremost, as a result you level into your combat options, which could be guns blazing, or straight up working around it the entire game. And it's fucking great.
In contrast, the thing most System Shock fans dislike about Bioshock, is that it's a straight up FPS, where the build options aren't there, thus you're stuck with that janky shooting.
**** Half Life 2 has action/adventure elements, between all the shitty puzzles you solve and straight up nothing you do at times (these aspects are meant to pace the experience).
Ergo point: Metroid Prime 1 and 2 are totally FPS games, the third one it's not even arguable, because the thing that makes it disappointing is that it's a straight up FPS, the fact that they have more straights than "go forward, shoot dudes" is actually amazing, and more instances in this genre should have been that way. Instead of the dime a dozen FPS we got. Be it Doom clones or Modern Warfare clones.
