What is the best RPG you've ever played?

What is the best RPG you've ever played? Can be on any platform, no matter how old or new.

My favourite would be:

Final Fantasy VII. Wish the graphics were actually like that, but in any case, the game was awesome and definitely the best RPG I've played to date.

Chrono Cross, FFVIII, FFIX and FF Tactics Advance would get honourable mentions.

Yeah, same thoughts here. FFX was OK for me (a lot of people seemed to have loved it but I found it a bit too linear), FFX-2 was just not fun, and FFXI wasn't great either.

I think the series is bouncing back though. FFXII was solid, and I expect FFXIII to be the full return of the quality FFs.

Love these 2 games.

The final fantasy series is pretty good top to bottom, FFVII or FFVIII are probably my favorite.

Chrono Trigger was fun too.

Xenogears (PS1) is such a great game with a story that will simply blow your mind and a cast of characters that is just stunning

Not on final fantasy games:

I think that Final Fantasy I OH SO OVERRATED. Play Xenogears to learn what a real mature story arch is all about. Final Fantasy games have weak story lines.

I never think of the Pokemon series (on handhelds) as RPGs for some reason but nearly all the ones I own would be in my top 10 RPG games I think.

Pokemon Diamond is amazing I think.

Opinion. Everyone has one and they aren't based on a measurable facts. I could see how people might prefer one to the other because the games style was changed a lot from ES3 to ES4.

Other than playability (which Oblivion stomps a mud hole into the remainder of the TES series), it cut down on some of the customization, it killed a lot of it's exploration and overall design with the horrid dynamic leveling, and aside from the Shivering Isles expansion it seemed to have lost all sense of some artistic flair.

Great game, loved it but it's flawed fundamentally which really held it back for me.

True, although I think its hard to argue the "leveled everything" system in Oblivion as an improvement. It completely ruined the feel of the game. Rare equipment is supposed to be RARE, an acomplishment, not to be found on every single random bandit after you hit level 20. But to each his own.
