Gotta give it to Monster Hunter, especially the Charge Blade in MHR. I don't know what it is, but the flow of this thing is a 10/10, and with the addition of aerials and gap closers in Rise, i can't think of any combat systems/weapons in another game that felt better. If i could, i would use this weapon with the same mechanics in every game😎

Star Wars: Jedi Survivor's melee combat is my favorite melee game so far. Wielding an actual Lightsaber never felt this good.

Next on my list is Ghost of Tsushima...especially the combat can look really cinematic. I like how quick everything dies, just like a real samurai movie and the combat is cool if you utilize stance-switching on the fly. (I could have gone with Sekiro for this but Ghost of Tsushima is just a great game compare to Sekiro in many ways)

Coming in 3rd is Bloodborne! No need to explained why either.

@davillain: +1 for Ghost of Tsushima. I also like that you can dish out mega damage but enemies could end you as quickly as well. I personally love to just go through the front door of an outpost for standoffs and just rumble with 20+ enemies than be a stealthy ninja lol.

Could go with any number of these games to be honest:

- Ninja Gaiden Black, NG II

- Bayonetta 1, 2, 3

- Devil May Cry 3, 4, 5

Off the top of my head I’m going to go with Ghost of Tsushima, the fights were fun and challenging at the same time, and felt rewarding to slay through a whole encampment.

Metal Gear Rising

Onimusha Games are pretty solid with the one hit kill timings which also apply to bosses.

Ninja Gaiden Black and 2. Still amazing to me how they went from 2D to a 3D system that feels so complete and rewarding. The better you become, the more of a master you feel and you can spend years learning to improve the way you fight.

Didn't you abandon it to use something else in Rise? A true CB enjoyer would never do that to a CB.

lol, got me there. Stop having memory. Started with CB in Rise as I loved the thing in World, but with the wirebugs in play, it made the GS just too damn awesomesauce. CB is already enough awesomesauce, so the wirebugs didn't do as much for it as it did for the GS. Love using both in Rise though.

Oh no, the wirebug made it insane. Gap closers/quick reposition with the wirebug into an SAED or an AED headshot was insane, plus being able to block any attacks without even taking damage, and have your vials instantly charged was stupid for counter attacks. Shiiiet it makes me want to buy Sunbreak and go back at nolifing the damn game, but there's simply too much new shit to play.

@hardwenzen: lol, that's true. Almost forgot. GS basically got its slow aspect removed. Went from boring to extremely fun for me.

Not sure what gimmick the next MH game is gonna have, but if there'd be no wirebugs or something similar, and no free climbing, I'll be dissapointed.

Yea, i feel like the wirebug made the combat flow so damn good, and that's coming from someone who enjoys the much more slower pace of a MH game. Honestly couldn't care less about being able to climb everything since i don't like verticality in games, but if there's no wirebug, i really don't know what they could add to keep the same combat flow.

If just one game, then it's Streets of Rage 3 probably, but each entry has its own flavor.

Monster hunter. I think it's the only game I play for the combat alone. Stories are pants. I don't like grinding generally. Exploring is a very short term interest in the games. But the fights against the various monsters are class. Frustrating sometimes (especially when also learning a new weapon) but great fun.

I'm more of the Lancer persuasion, though I have played Rise with the Great Sword mostly (I'm a traditionalist.). For the next monster hunter game i get, i will go with the charge blade.

I also enjoyed the combat in FF7 Remake too. They did a good job there.

Favorite melee combat? I mean, I would vota for Kingdom Hearts 2. The combat got a lot better than in KH1 in terms of just being able to make combo's without the need to hit an enemy to even start it up. Plus, when you got a hold of your second keyblade, things got intense. Favorite game with my favorite melee. :)

As a fan of soulsborne, they don't really have great melee combat. They're fun, but they could be better. :D

Ninja Gaiden 2 on 360. You could make the case for DMC or Bayonetta having better/deeper combat overall, but those other games just don't have the beautiful over the top violence of NG2.

But my top 3 involving multiple opponents would be

@Jag85: A melee would be a scuffle between one or more combatants.

Melee combat is very close range hand to hand combat with fists or close range weapons such as knives, clubs, etc.

@hardwenzen: it's good you're appreciating a switch game so much. This is good news. I haven't played monster hunter rise, but I hear it's great.

As for me, besides halo infinite, I'd have to say bayonetta has great mechanics, though it's tough to get right. Same with SoR4..it's easy to get started and enjoy but can be very difficult if you want to truly master it.

Melee combat in both RPGs, and Strategy games explicitly means someone attacking up close rather than firing projectiles.

The Switch version was the pre alpha version they launched to test on children. Real men play it on the ps5 or pc.

That's a good question. I would say Devil May Cry 5. The arms that you could use [as Nero] was a great addition and the combat is top notch. Playing with V was fun as well.
